    Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! My Easitrack order turned up today - plain concrete sleepers with flatbottom rail and wooden sleepers with bullhead rail, it's just a shame that, at the moment, there are no wooden seepers available for the flatbottom rail, but I understand it is planned to be developed. Anyway, I've already tried out assembling both types and have laid some on the little photography diorama board I'm building.             G.

The Saltney Railway

Saltney, Hills,holes and houses.

To fill a hole in a corner, Steve dug out some old bits of low relief buildings from "Talacre" and added a few walls (with support) to create a nice dank scene behind the signalbox. When it was completed (much to Steve's consternation)someone noticed the similarity to a scene from a certain grisly British film of the early 70's. Office, Mess Stores - further photos

Here are a few more photos of the office complex.           All that remains now is to paint the roof tiles.   There are two additional brick built chimneys to add to the higher of the two hipped roofs and two vents/chimneys. These will be made and added at a later stage.

Well, in the words of a Pink Floyd song 'just another brick in the wall' has been this week's theme! My birthday present from my wife (would love to have heard this birthday present explained in the staff room!) some retaining walls has arrived. The local 'brickies' from Glasburgh have been out with their cement and trowels and the walls are taking shape. I had already fitted a few bits near loco depot but the latest parts around the raised section finally make it look like part of the layout

Planning J39 drive - rebuilding tender chassis?

Well the time has come for serious thinking (some would say I should have done this before).   The North Yard gearbox I got from Branchlines runs very smoothly, and sticking a mini-drill on the back turns the wheels quite nicely! However this isn't exactly the most prototypical drive so I need to work out how to get a universal joint through to the tender and mount a motor.   First problem is that the shaft of the gearbox comes out only slightly below the cab floor. Small scale property development!

One feature planned for the area at the top of the embankment is a block of modern flats, the brick built type that seem to have sprung up all over the place in the past few years and loosely based on the one where I live.   To get some idea of the size, I made a paper mock up to make sure it wasn??�t going to be too dominating, but it seems to fit in nicely.     Construction will be a transparent plastic structure, with my own brick paper overlaid onto a thin sheet of plasticard. Judith Edge Steelman Royale dodgy handrail...

Not sure what to do about this. If you look at the front handrail you will see that the angles on either side are different due to my dodgy bending. I could strip it down and start again but I'm worried about messing things up and I've already put a lot of effort in. On the other hand its not particulary noticable from most normal viewing angles. Hmmm.....   Does anyone know what shade of green to use? Brunswick Green is mentioned in the Bicester book but I would like a second opinion. And

Well now that the Wigan exhibition is out of the way, the group is going to continue with the work on Millport Victoria. Kyle - on the Fiddle - Part I

Update - The last two nights have seen progress on the fiddle yard area. Due to the number of boards/joints on the layout, cassettes were decided as has been depicted in a number of previous sketches. After much consideration and options I decided that two single and two double cassettes [which can be joined together] were required. Why double? Because when a loco is running around its train, due to the small length of the layout, the rolling stock will need to be pushed back partly in the fidd

Building the Fence Houses 21t hopper

Over the last few days I have been building some etched brass 21t hopper wagons using the "Fence Houses" kit, which is basicaly an etch that folds up into a very nice model of the prototype.   With the etch you receive a descriptive history about the prototype, an exploded diagram of how the kit goes together, along with another five pages on how to build the kit of which are very well explained, I followed the instrutions to the tee and didn't find any problems with the build.   Only additi

A possible prototype

For Christmas, I got the second edition of Joe Brown's London Railway Atlas and it's already heavily thumbed. Whilst browsing it recently, I cam across Charlton station. At first glance, it doesn't look particularly interesting, but cross-referencing with my copy of Quail, suggests there's much more than meets the eye. DRS 20 almost complete!
