Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

First video

Minor setback down in the shed tonight, well perhaps not? I noticed that the silver paint on the rails had chipped off in a couple of places, on closer inspection I discovered that running my nail along it it scrapped off pretty easily. It seems that the plastic that the track is made of doesn't like the enamel paint, or the mix of enamel and plasticote. It is the sort of plastic that you can never superglue when it breaks almost nylon like! I also discovered that the paint had resulted in a sli

new layout

Modelling progress has been made, I'm pleased to say, in many forms. The show last weekend was a blast. Really enjoyed Rochdale and didn't get back too late.   Also, I've built a new layout. This took almost all of last Monday morning and comprises a 1.5m x 1.0m board with an oval, loop and couple of sidings. Oh and some grass mat. I painted the board grey first and then cut away trackbed and roadways. All this was duly presented to my son on his birthday on Tuesday and was a big success. The

LB&SCR E1 - My first HO loco.

In the June 06 issue of the British 1:87 Society newsletter (Issue 46) Tim Stevens details how he bashed a OO Hornby Terrier into its larger brother the E1. The article was very much up my street, being a southern modeler through and through and having a couple of Hornby terriers lying about. Tim?????s conversion was a little on the basic side for my tastes and after studying photos and drawings for a while I was able to come up with some simple modifications to improve the conversion.   The

Starting out in British HO

First a little background. I??™ve been dabbling in several of the major scales for the past 15 or so years, though nothing has ever really stuck. I built a couple of n gauge layouts but was never satisfied with the appearance of the trackwork and the nightmare of couplings (never found a system that I got on with). I??™ve done a fair amount in 4mm too, but the plentiful RTR scene has left me a little bored.       I made the decision to make a change to something with less proprietary suppo

Mikkel made me do it ;-)

I wasn't going to, but here, by popular request , are some pictures of the internally complete No 2 end cab. Everything is pretty much the same as the other end, but with different rear bulkhead detail. The lights highlight the detail nicely, even in daylight! I decided to stick with the 1K2 ohm resistors in the end.     The next pic highlights the need to clean the windows!     Showing the position of the cab lights, and the sunshades in position.     I'm hoping to have the

16T Minerals

The following notes have appeared elsewhere on the interweb, but I thought I would update it and include in my blog here.   My 16T minerals serve a dual purpose; being put to work on both Foundry Lane and New Haden. I've built a few to date; but have plans to do many more and (after a bit of messing about with other bits) have settled the following as the basic spec for my EM gauge fleet:   Body For standard dia 1/108 I tend to use Parkside bodies (same again for dia 1/109 too) but for reb

Bricking it.

Oh dear, my computer decided to give up recently and required some time in the local PC shop for repairs. So without the PC I had no option but to bite the bullet and get on with some modelling again.     I finally got around to adding some colour to my goods shed. This was done using water colour pencils recommended by Steve (Pixie). I'm quite happy with the out come, but it still needs some touching in. This was done over a grey primer, then the pencils were used wet (orange) and then dry

Bachmann Presflo

I couldn't resist buying a few of these at the recent Stafford exhibition and chose four of the Blue Circle liveried wagons (B873364) for my initial purchase. A photo of this prototype appears on Paul Barlett's wagon photos website: http://paulbartlett.zenfolio.com/brpresflorugby/h24e65b9#h24e65b9 The painting and lettering detail on the model is excellent, the wagon carries the TOPS code (CPV) and the dates on the maintenance data panel read August 1977. It features the correct brake gear

Barrow Road Boards update

It's a while since I did any work on the boards, so with the temporary lull in work on the shed buildings I decided to spend some time on the boards. The last work was cutting the styrofoam to produce the incline base on the boards north of Barrow Road road bridge. It is at this point that that incline begins at 1 in 89 rising to 1 in 60 up the bank to Fishponds Station. The styrofoam has been cut and fixed to the boards. Note the position for the North Exit from/to the shed where the trackwor

BR Diagram 1/031 shock open ready for painting

Now ready for painting in rusty bauxite. The original Parkside chassis was reused with modified axleboxes. Various details were added from scraps of plastic (the buffer beams are Evergreen channel), shock spring covers were spares from another Parkside kit and some MJT shock buffers finish it all off.   For some reason none of these wagons seem to have lamp irons, despite being fitted. Presumably there must have been a reason for this - other shock wagons have them.

DCC Shortcircuits on Insulfrog points

After buying a Q1 (Hornby one) I was eager to try it out. Unfortunatly the wheel rim width is slightly wide and causes a short circuit on some points. A possible solution is to extent the 'frog' by painting (in black or rusty colour oil paint) on the corner where short circuit occurs. Tip for viewing the track on the other side of the engine I have found that a macup mirror from christmas cracker helps this way you don't need to lean over too much.   On the downside painting obviously increase

Work and play

I made one of my too occasional visits to the KAG clubroom on Thursday to see how the rest of the team were getting on. It was a full turnout and so there was no room for everyone to work on the track. Instead we see Mike's J class again, but in video this time:   http://www.youtube.com/user/video10800?gl=GB&hl=en-GB#p/u/3/hV0R6RuO01c   http://www.youtube.com/user/video10800?gl=GB&hl=en-GB#p/u/2/yWZaFPK2wO4   And while those that could find some space worked , Mark got his DCC k

Hythe Parkway - 1 down, 2 to go...

Hi Guys,   Just returned from the Newbury Show with Hythe! All in all, it was the best the layout has ever performed! The stock performed well, all but one point work faultlessly (but after a while that point worked well!), the new lighting gantry worked well (after we stopped breaking the bulbs! ).   We had an extra piece of stock with us, in the form of a Hornby Class 395, which was lent to us by High Wycombe & District Model Railway Society member Paul Chapman (Thanks Paul!). It did

Backboards

Today, in between general weekend jobs, and painting the girls bedroom ! I have been putting the backs on the layouts, I have been contemplating these for the last week. What height? What to do at the ends? What to do with the bit that hides the sector plate?   In the end I decided to just go for it and stop thinking about it !   The other thing that had stopped me doing the job, was having a period of time that was daylight and dry as the two halves needed to be together to make sure

Hopefully it will begin....

well since December and the Xmas season the last few weeks (6 or 7) have been a right mess (seeing as i'm a student).   two weeks back from the xmas holidays and exam season started preventing me from modelling, this led to a back log which still has yet to be finished.   anyway, moving more to positive aspects, i applied for History and Politics at De Montfort University, had an intervoew and got an offer two days after which i have been very quick to accept .   zoom to today, and hopefu

First powered P4 movements and more 00 fun

Last Monday night we had the outer P4 circuit complete and (temporarily) wired so we could test a few trains - a moment for some celebration!   The honour of providing a debutante was given to John Farmer after all his hard work on the boards recently, and went to a Vitrains 37 (all these videos were done on a Flip video camera - the sound goes all phasy when uploaded to YouTube although the originals are fine )   http://www.youtube.c...h?v=mPnWvgfzED0   This evolved into a 3 loco lash up

Crossover change

The reason I haven't completed the point motor installation yet, is because of the really hard challenge of the crossover by the tunnel. Hard to reach, hard to do. So, here is the plan.   Remove the points, and put them onto Crewesly TMD. Buy 2x Left hand 'Express' points and 2x Right hand 'Express' points. This will allow me to crossover my trains onto different tracks from both directions. One of the crossovers will be on the mainline section near the level crossing, whilst the other will be
