Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Gotta see something move!

After seeing nothing move for quite a while we decided to up the pace a little (which with hindsight was a little ill advised). Much sawing, drilling and er...screwing went on into the wee small hours and after a week or so we were fastening the last bits of the main line baseboards. You can see how strong the boards are as Steve had to clamber into the corner to add the last bits! Another few days of painting tidying and track laying and our first train was trundling round. The honours went

Some updates now the blogs are back

Good to see rmweb slowly recovering   In the meantime I've mostly decalled the 02     and am also part way through painting and decalling a Carl Peplow resin 47 shell I had lurking in a drawer.     and the Maunsell coach project is slowly getting there. This is a test build with the underframe, sides ends and roof. Couple of small errors to fix on the underframe etches but nothing serious. Need to fit the bogies, underframe and roof vents next, see how it looks.

Office, Mess & Stores Walls

I have now coloured the walls using my favoured method with coloured crayons. The Berol Karisma ones are no longer available so I have substituted some from the Faber Castell range which have proved to be better.         The building substructure is now assembled and I will add these walls to it shortly.

hornby Live steam

I have a layout running two separate loops which are fed from the same common return and two other separate feeds, and I was wondering if any one knew if two live steam controllers would work using the same common return, i dont really want to try it and end up blowing up two live steam locos and two conntrollers.   thanks Matt

The first post

I got the Hornby Select system for Christmas, so I'm down to three locos at the moment as I need to get more decoders. I'm hooked on DCC from the very start! My son and I spent a good hour on the first afternoon watching the lights change from white to red and back again on my 50 without it moving an inch.   So far I've just connected the two DC feeds which I had on the old set up to the output from the Select, and it works fine. I never had any sections or similar, I always use/d points

Clan Line - Con Rods

The con rods etched arrived today from Bill Bedford, and I am now very confused!   I can identify what some of the parts are, but have no idea about many of the other ones (for example the part that I have identified as the con rods, has 8 components. Its very clear which 2 are the top and bottom of each half of the con rod (that would be the parts with half etched detail on them.) but the other 4 bits just look like rectangles that are the length of each component. Is this some kind of tes

Move VSOE

This is part copied from another topic I started earlier asking for help finding photos:     Just came across this passage of test in the Pullman safety case   Clearly this shows that for my 1998 formation, just having the green Mk 1 RKB 1566 is all that is required (and one of the steel sided Pullmans (i.e. the 1928 met cams or the ex 5Bell coaches).   Another interesting point picked up from the report was that in 1998 'Gwen' was under heavy refurbishment (shown as a bare frame) so I

Next project or two.

With my ED finished, sorry no pic's but it looks just as it did before the conversion, thought turn to what to do next. With work on the layout somewhat stagnant, I'm sure when if the weather warms up I will get more enthusiasm, I am getting on with stock. First up is something I have fancied for a long, long time, a stretched Hymek on a C-C chassis. For this I have obtained a spare Heljan Falcon chassis. It looks like this could be a bit of a monster. I will get some pictures of progress on thi

Shochood B

A slightly longer term project that has made some progress in the last week is a partially (well, mostly) scratchbuilt Shochood B. These seem mainly to have been used in conjunction with steel products (they were all initially branded 'Empty to' for Port Talbot or Newport (Mon) from new), and later many found their way into engineers service under the codename 'Dace'.   It's a wagon type I've always rather liked, and since Bartlett et al contains the drawings... Some time ago, when I was buil

Office Chimney

At last... I can add another entry!   Here is the office chimney which I have constructed form some old Formcraft/Alan Gibson/C&L brick parts.     The chimney is constructed from 4mm scale english bond brickwork parts - see photo - which are placed over lengths of plastic rods, which fit through the holes in the brick parts, to assemble a convincing chimney. I have a stock of these parts which I have previously used to build the water tower on my Sheep Pasture layout.

Kyle - Overlaying...

Update - Work on the track was not a great success last night so tonight saw a bit of experimentation with the rolling stock.   The bodywork of 37420 has received some filler to allow the remaining two grill etches to be placed however I realised tonight that Farish and 'Boots' nail varnish removal pads are not happy bed fellows.....whilst cleaning up some of the body, the pads reacted with the paintwork - will have to assess further when dry :icon_mutter:   Meanwhile, I thought I would hav

Guess the project...

As I'm having trouble uploading images at the mo, here's a quick quiz to see if anyone can guess what I am currently having a go at scratchbuilding from the 'ingredients' alone:   3x Farish Mk1 coach chassis 8x Farish class 158 bogies 2x Farish 158 air dams 2x Farish dummy class 150 couplings 1x Farish pantograph 1x pack BHE third rail shoes 1x Tomix '20m' motor chassis 1mm styrene sheet   Pictures to follow when I can upload them!   David

Working with what you've got...

Are aftermarket components any better then what can be achieved by fettling off the shelf products? I'm not convinced. The air horns on my Bachmann 37 are a good example.   Plenty of firms (A1 and Markits spring to mind) offer turned brass air horns for the model. I think people think that it must be better, otherwise why would someone have produced it? Yes they may be more robust, and I've definitely seen them added to a model to good effect. However, I'm cheap!   The Bachmann moulding ac

Hythe Parkway - Cassettes and clubrooms

Hi Guys,   Well last night we went up to the clubrooms to just finish putting Hythe up, almost. I say almost because we haven't put up the town scene board, due to us forgetting the little board that attaches it to the platform board!!! . We are going up early on wednesday so we can get it up before the AGM starts (as well as playing trains!).   We had a couple of problems, 3 points won't work (but surprising the one that was giving us problems worked perfectly! ), but managed to get two

Storm Warning!

A big shout out to the Loughborough Model Centre for holding onto my Tornado order - I picked it up today, and, well...   Fabulous! Every little detail I can think of has been done on this model (bar the roller bearings, but that's an accepted compromise). The livery is perfectly applied, right down to the maker's plate on the tender frame, picked out in silver. Under a magnifying glass you can read the legible printing on the dedictation plaque too...!     This is by far the best A1 mode

Deltic Prototypes - Craftsman Kit Applied

Been busy adding some of the Craftsman kit to the prepped Lima bodyshell, the main constituents are in place, grilles, nose lights etc. The "whiskers" and body stripes will be applied after painting the body.     As you can see I've started on the sandbox fillers which are very time consuming to do. First a 2x4mm hole needs making in the body then the etched part folding in a off-centre V shape. This is then inserted in the hole and glued in place. Any etch left sticking proud is filed off

P4ing the Flying Scotsman

Not really a lot to say on this, other than its a much more difficult conversion than Clan Line was. The big problem at the moment is that there is not enough space inside the splashers to fit the new wheels. Off the top of my head the 'front to front' width of the new wheels is 22mm, the rear and centre splashers have a clearance of 22.5mm between them, whereas the front wheel only has 21.5mm clearance.   I can see 4 possible courses of action: 1) give up - not really an option given tha

More J39 progress

A good Friday night and weekend of activity sees more progress on the J39 Chassis Kit from Dave Bradwell   The frames get the various additional plates to form the back end of the pistons.   This shows the slide bars in place for the (dummy) connecting rods.   The coupling rods have been assembled, complete with the rivot for the joint.   And the hornblocks and guides were made up. These are going to be fun as there is no slot in the hornblock and just a piece of brass on the out

City of Truro in the Highlands

Tried my best to ignore CofT, but the various images here were too much to resist, so on the basis that it ran in Scotland in the 50's and that I saw it at Aviemore on its recent trip One was ordered up. It certainly is a lovely model and I do like the adjustable loco/tender join- tender pick-up is a bonus, and long overdue IMO. This is something that I add to all Bachmann locos as a matter of course and I would like to think that it is to be a standard from now. Certainly its more important to

Goods Shed Shenanigans

Hello again   As mentioned in my last post I managed to get a bit more done on the goods shed for Highclere at the St Albans show over the weekend and as I had today off work I decided to take a short break from the electrics and carry on with the shed. I have manged to get a bit done today, so much so that I thought I might as well post a blog entry on the good shed...   The goods shed has been made in the same way I have done the other buildings with laser engraved brick paper stuck onto
