Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

I hate Woodwork!

Hello.   I really admire people who can make things from wood. It really is a talent, and a talent which is still beyond me. Today I have spent ALL day trying to make a box for my control panel and I have reminded myself why I hate it! Today hasnt been a great start to the new year and hopefully one which wont continue, there has been temper tantrums, tears, and lots of moments where I just had to walk away, I just cannot do woodwork:(   Anyway, here is the result of all my efforts today, in

Happy 2010 from Leipzig

Is it not odd somehow that with the jump of just one second to the next a year filled with events comes to an end? I hope you all had a good New Year's night, of course!   Anyway - around noon today I thought it would be good to head out for an hour or two, and so I packed my camera again. Weather was mostly overcast and a few snowflakes twirled to the ground every now and then, so I limited myself to capturing stationary trams, as the lighting was too adverse for photographing moving objects

A field of Seacows

My ModelZone voucher didn't stay long on my computer desk. Yesterday, I visited my local store to see what I could spend my money on. Was tempted for a FGW 'fagpacket' liveried mk2 brake carriage, also, a few details like bins, and people.... but no. The one that caught my eye, was Hornby's YGB 'Seacow' in a weathered Mainline livery. I asked if they had an EWS liveried, but they have been discontinued. Bachmann are the only ones left to do Seacows in EWS livery. Anyhow, I got out my money, and

PTAs - Nearly Finished

I'm slowly getting nearer to finishing this rake. Manage to get the undersides sprayed up last week before the snow got too bad to get the car out of the garage, but they all need another coat to paint the insides and a couple of bits of touching up to the sides. Still aiming to have at least one finished for the weekend.   I have also finally got the first pair of bogies built, without proper spacers these really are proving to be something of a pain to get square. The last thing I can thi

Time for a swift half...

Well today turned out to be a 'snow day' with my family not able to get to work and nursery! After a fun morning building a massive snowman my 2 year old went to bed... So out came some prototype photos, a ruler and my notebook. I decided with the cold weather baseboard construction will have to wait and my time would be best spent on the structure I'm least looking forward to constructing - the pub. I've not got views from all sides but I've got both ends and the front plus some partial rear s

DMU update 4

Well it's pretty much finished!   Weathering is complete and the model has been matt varnished - I'm really pleased with the circle of grease on the buffers, something I've been trying to replicate for ages. Flush glazing has also been fitted. Unfortunately I can't get a decent photo which shows the fading and weathering properly at the moment - these are the best I can manage!   I'd like to thank Jim S-W for all the help and advice he's given me while I've been working on this model

Hythe Parkway - The Tour!

Hi Guys,   Just thought I'd update you on which exhibitions I'll be taking Hythe to this year:   Saturday 13th February 2010 - Newbury Model Railway Club exbition - Park House School, Newbury Saturday 20th February 2010 - Ris-ex* 2010 - Princess Risborough Community Centre   EDIT: Saturday 6th March 2010 - Churchrail 2010 - St Mary Immaculate school, Warwick   Unforunatly that's all the exhibitions we have for 2010, but if you know of an exhibtion in 2010 that needs layouts, feel free t

New Year - New Layout

For a while now I've been considering my next steps in railway modelling since Foundry Lane has now fulfilled its role as test track/shunting plank. Perhaps I could extend and improve it, but there are a few fairly big things which I would've liked to have done differently (the baseboards and the method of turnout operation to name just two) which would mean a fairly substantial rebuild. As the layout has exhibition enquiries for the next 18 months I'm a bit reluctant to start ripping up track

DMU update 3

As mentioned in my previous post, the DMU has now been painted, the blue and yellow with Halfords paint, the underframe and roofs with paint I've mixed up.   Work has now started on weathering, as mentioned, I'm trying to represent a shabby and tired unit, with grubby, faded paintwork. Lots of work to do yet, but I'm happy with progress so far.

Getting creative - a sketch of things too come...

I always find a good sketch helps me visualise how things are going to work - ever since the early days of armchair modelling for Paxton Road, so today saw me knock something up for Rose Hill.   Usually I'd start from scratch but I wondered if I could build on the (poor) photos I took last night with some ink to show what I have in mind and check out whether the scaling factor will still trick the eye.     What do you think? I'm pretty pleased. I suspect I'll lengthen the platform by abo

Vi Trains 47s

7th January 2010 - heres hoping the blog problem is fixed soon, running out of times to set that will keep new posts at the top of the list!   Having ran out of work to do on the 59s, and lacking parts to work on the 73s (wheels), buildings (brick sheet), 325 (new ends), FGAs (instructions!) I have turned attention back to my Class 47 fleet.   I started off fitting 47709 with the new Shawplan roof grills, (so thats now the whole fleet fitted), once that was out the way made a start on detai

O&K Yeoman JYAs part 2

As cockups go, 2010 will have to be a pretty bad year to top this.... I have managed to build the first side of the first JUA the wrong way round (foolishly I thought I knew better than the instructions...) Given that this kit is already missing its floor I think I will call it a day on this one and use it as a source of spares.   So its decision time now, buy more kits (assuming that ICM actually have any to sell me), or give up and crack out the plasticard and scratch build some instead...

Clan Line

Work is continuing to progress at a slow rate, mostly because of a lack of con rods.   Loco: The front bogie is now removed awaiting paint, of course this is going to be a long wait as I cant start it until the snow is gone. I have added slimmed down sideframes cut from the Hornby trailing truck, having got these fitted the attached photo clearly shows that the truck is not riding level, so some more washers need to be fitted to the mounting screw. It can also be seen that there is a lot of

47709

A bit of roof painting this afternoon, and 47709 is now 'finished' (well sort of).   Still need to add the boiler port detail to the no2 end, along with the boring stuff needed to get an operational loco (new lights, P4, couplings and DCC) but from a modelling point of view the interesting stuff is now finished. (I've just realised that the photo below was taken before I re did the OHLE flashes that came off with the masking earlier.) One other job that still needs doing is replacing the

Scaling things down? A quandry...

Well Christmas and New Year have come and gone and despite a few items (a sound equipped 37, EWS Seacow and a Dynamis controller) I've managed to make some progress on Rose Hill.   This evening I've been scaling up dimensions from Google Maps (great tool - when you draw a line it tells you how many feet it is!). From my simple layout (see below) I've determined a number of key dimensions: Platform length = 332ft = 1328mm Station building length = 42ft = 168mm Pub length = 52ft =

Intercity Models O&K JUA/JHA

I have just started building a pair of Intercity Models JUA box wagons to form part of my Mendip stone fleet. The initial intention is to build a pair, and add to the rake over time to get a set of 6 which will be mixed up with my PTAs and hopefully some Mendip Rail JNAs.   Having only just started I have already began to make changes to the kit. First of all I found the top rail a real pain to bend to shape, the thick brass coupled with my Hold & fold being about an inch too short made th

Clan Line pt 5

Having ran out of work to do on the other projects I was working on, its back to Clan Line.   My original plan was to sort out the loco to tender coupling, but I am still struggling to work out what is needed for it (as I am combining the fitting of that, with scratch building the missing bits under the cab/firebox. Starting to think that I am going to have to try and get to see the prototype with camera.....   In the end I moved onto the tender, I was going to start building the Masokits su

More on the 59

A lot more progress on 59004 today, which has now unfortunately got to the limit of what work can be done on it for the time being.   The headstock was finished off adding the triangular plates behind it (after removing the Class 66 sand boxes.) I have also added a strip of 20thou on the top edge to space it out to get a tighter fit with the body.   I have added the damper between body and bogie, its a little under scale but I re used a part cut of the Class 66 bogies. Speaking of bogies, th

59104

Given that work on 59004 has now come to a halt through lack of parts, I've made a start on my 2nd Class 59. This will be 59104 in Hanson livery, again fitting to a Bachmann Class 66 Chassis. Unfortunatly I've left the lima body/chassis back down in Devon and wont be able to pick it up for a couple more weeks, so theres only so much that can be done without it.   For the most part this will follow the same process that I have used with 59004, with the main differences being on the headstock. New In - shed Video. Happy New Year.

Happy New Year to every one....   After trying and failing to post this in the early hours of the morning after our party guests had gone home, I gave up.   After PMs with Andy it became obvious that the blog post only allows dates up to the end of 2009, So by way of cheating I have backdated this to five to midnight.   Yesterday morning some modelling turned into "testing" trains which in turn ended up with some video shooting.   Its the two on30 modules at work and I think the longest

59004 - Part 2

A little more progress this evening, First up the underframe. So far I have got the fuel tank and battery boxes built and fitted, the fuel tank was the Bachmann moulding shortened to the Class 59 length, this still need the gauge and filling point adding (although for the next model (59104) I will make 2 cuts on the tank to reuse the Bachmann gauge/filler point.) The battery boxes were a bit easier, a simple case of fitting a plasticard back to the Lima moulding and gluing into position. Now n
