Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Class 59/0 repowering - The Headstocks

5th Jan 2010   The work on the chassis follows 4 main areas, Underframe, bogies, headstock and details.   The bogies is the easiest job, simply cutting off the Bachmann sideframes and replacing with Lima. To further improve the detail, I also removed the break shoes from the bogie frames to add separate items.   Underframe will follow the same procedure as in my Class 67 thread, photos will follow when I get round to gluing the bits together tomorrow.   Details are exactly that, the pip

Converting Hornby mk3s to a Class 325

Having pretty much finished my PTA rebuilds, I am now in need of another project to keep me busy. Realistly I aught to be working on either my 73s or 59 detailing jobs, but instead I have dug out another major project to work on, conversion of 4 Hornby short mk3s into a Royal Mail 325 EMU.   The plan:   First step is to strip down the mk3s and do the prep work. The coach has the window strip and bogies pulled off, followed by cutting off all raised detail and the corridor connectors. The roo

Virgin HSTs.

4th January 2010 Going back to the Virgin rake, I have finally finished the renumbering of the powercars. Just need the City of Aberdeen nameplates now, and to convert the roof grills to the other type. Planning to get some wheels for them (hopefully at the Warick show on the 16th), then the final job will be adding the kaydees to the rake.   Starting to think about replacing my converted TRSB with the new Hornby one (depending on how good the model turns out to be.) While the Hornby model

PTAs Part 4

3rd January 2010   Why oh why cant I just put up with an inaccurate model.......   Looking at a photo before adding the box/leaver thingie on the left hand side of the wagon, I got distracted by the profile of the side ribs. I had originally decided to stick with the model as it is on the side, but realising where the difference was (its only the ribs over the chassis ribs that matches the original PTA (and the model) I decided to do something about it   So, every other rib was carefully c

Fairlie small beginnings

I've made a start on the Double Fairlie, and in an hour or so managed to fit and dress the bearings for one of the power bogies. The drive gear needs sorting out next and then I can fit the frame spacers at the open end to make a rigid unit, but it all seems to be going well so far (famous last words!)     I've also ordered some figures from the Aiden Campbell range; a driver and fireman (for the Fairlie) and a few passengers and other figures for my passenger vehicles/layout and I'll pos

Ribble Bank Main Line update....

Well I havent taken a great deal of new pictures for this... the posting time is fudged due to the s/w error on RMWeb atm....   I have made a plasticard "concrete base" for my Bachmann shed and done a little more ballasting. Painted in Railmatch concrete with some light weathering for the track centres - would appreciate any advice on what I should / shouldnt do to get it just right.

The Flying Scotsman in P4

Yes I know I still havent finished Clan Line (still awaiting the con rods), but I've now made a proper start on my second P4 steam loco, 4472 in preserved condition (i.e. the Hornby NRM release)   The planed work pretty much follows that of Clan Line, with the model gaining a new Tender chassis (this time from Comet), new front bogie (I think the sideframes for the LNER bogie that come in the same pack as the Buillid one used under the MN is the right version for the A3? If so I plan on scratc

Early Blue Twins: now it's 1547 in pictures

Does what it says on the tin really. Photographed in artificial light, 1547 features a blank headcode at No.1 end as discussed on the Waverley images thread, and photographed at Melrose in December '68. To get her north onto what we assume was a 2M52, I've optioneered a night mails at No.2 end, 3S01. Same disclaimers apply as to finishing sister 1536.

Borders Brush - Extra glam for Early Blue 1536

In the end the headcodes were the easy bit. Give them a good clearout from inside the bodyshell, stanley blade and pencil rubber method worked a treat, taking care to square the edges. I recommend an episode of Midsomer Murders for this (subject to regional variations), serves two locos.   I used cut & paste - literally - headcodes from Heljan Claytons, reversed onto clear sellotape, and mounted straight back onto the inside of the cab front, adjust by eye, dilute to taste. Sand Dryer Chimney

The drawings for the shed and all the associated buildings were made using a combination of plans, from maps I have in my possession, counting bricks from photographs and information from other sources. In the case of the chimney I got the drawing wrong.   The laser cut parts for the chimney were cut to my drawings to form a structure 44ft high tapering from 3ft square at the top to 6ft at the bottom. I then received a new photograph taken from a new angle and closer position....... where has

Sand Dryer More Progress

Having assembled the carcase of the building I have now fixed the four walls into position. The building is now awaiting final finishing with the attachment of the roof. Unfortunately the laser cut parts for the roof have not arrived yet so I will now switch attention to the sand dryer chimney... watch this space.   Here are a few photos to be going on with...   The prototype..

Judith Edge Steelman Royale frames + bufferbeams.

This is a kit for a Thomas Hill Steelman Royale 4 wheel diesel hydraulic loco. These were built for the MoD. The kit is etched brass with resin detail parts and sits on a Black Beetle motor bogie (not supplied). You have to supply your own buffers (Gibson). Prototype photos can be found in 'The Bicester Military Railway' (OPC). Instructions consist of 3 pages of text, an assembly drawing, a page of detail photos and a parts list. Construction starts with the platform. The frames and valances

Nonneminstre Coles Crane

Started this one on the old rmweb. I'll post a link to it if I can find it again. Anyway, it's almost finished now. Here's a photo of the body in primer (Hycote acrylic white car primer) being prepared for the top coat.     And here's the body finish painted and resting on the chassis:     Jobs left to do are glazing the cab and attaching and rigging the jib. Which leaves me with a dilemma... The angle/load indicater (semi-circular bit) on the jib needs painting. I've seen a photo of

Fruits of my Labours

After a rather more protracted effort than it should have been, I've finally finished the vans and here they are:     From left to right , ex LNER fruit, BR vent van, and rebuilt BR Shock. And yes , the Fruit and Shock still need couplings.   Unfortunately I've noticed the chassis on the vent van is not 100% square . It seems to run fine, because it's been out on the shunting plank without trouble - it was only some time later that I noticed a fractional rock when stood on a mirror. Since

The Start of a Shed!

Hello again everyone! It's been a while since my last entry, as quite frankly ive been rather busy with a new job and college work.   Nether the less i have done some minimal work on the nw Shed for my yard. this is loosley based on the design for the low relief shed on my boxfile as i liked what i had achieved and wanted to replicate it on a sightly bigger scale! So heres a few snaps of it right now as the paint and glue dries for initial asembly. appologies for the quality these were took o

A1 Models Hunslet Jackshaft

Flycranks. Cut them from the etch, soldered them together (laminated from 2 layers), cut an axle from 1/8". Broached out the holes to suit the axle and the crankpins (Romford). Checked them against the wheels and guess what? The crankpin throw is different from the wheels... There was no mention in the instructions as to what wheels to use neither are there any alternative cranks to suit different wheels included (which could be easily done...) Making new cranks should be easy, just a case o

A1 Models Hunslet chassis.

The chassis was fairly straightforward. I built it rigid, as I'm still new to chassis building I'll save compensation etc. for later efforts when I'm feeling more confident. Wheels are Romfords, lathe turned supplied by West Coast Kit Centre. Gearbox is a High Level Loadhauler+ 108:1. The motor is a Mashima. I chose a Loadhauler+ to move the motor forward out of the cab. It still protrudes slightly but I can live with that. Here's a mock-up: Coupling rods are laminated from 2 layers. I bro

The Sound of a 37!

My 37 with sound arrived today, and after having to work out what all the functions did - why no instructions??? - its been hauling my short engineering train around a circle of track on the kitchen floor!   Its been a really interesting afternoon, learning how to use the Dynamis controller, and the sounds themselves. As both new into OO and DCC, here's a short review of each:   The loco itself is a beautiful model, very heavy (I'm used to N gauge!), solidly made, and highly detailed. Bachma

Delph coal drops retaining walls

Have made a start on the stone retaining walls for the coal drops. These were along the back and both ends of the drops and also a section set back at an angle where the road entrance was located. The walls were of coarse stone and appear to have been a 76.2 times scaled-up model of the Wills coarse stone plastic sheets!! So far I have cut the basic wall facing sheet along the entrance section and part done the right-hand end wall. Later this will be split into two sections, one each on the two

And there were two! plus one, erm no two! Tamper, pacer, and oh no not another 73!

Evening all,   firstly would like to wish everyone a Happy 2010! well one of my last Blogs of 2009, wow whod of thought?!   well the day after getting back from my Friends, with new projects in tow, thought itd be good to share them on here with my blog ...   in tow in a rather broken plastic bag ( note to self not the best to carry unboxed trains in), was a Bachmann 35-165 Motorised Plasseur Tamper ... now some may think this is a boring RTR model, but it actually has plenty of scope to b

Trackwork finished

Well i've been busy over the Xmas hols building and laying track to the point that i can say it's finished. Maybe just a bit of tidying up here and there. Now all i've got to do is wire it up and fit point motors etc. Then it's time to do some scenery, which is something i've not done much of (Yet) .   Here we are on it's side to make wiring easier.
