Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Thinking about OO - but what could I achieve?

I will model in N gauge for life - it the ideal scale for my principle interest, that is modelling realistic urban scenes, but recently I've been thinking more about having a go in OO.   What is tempting me to play with the big trains? Well the catalyst is the Bachmann VEP, and the forthcoming CEP from Honrby. The detail on the Bachmann model is so impressive, and living in a third rail area, its something I've long been tempted to model. This is a new addition to my modelling interests - the

Penzance Signal Box- Up date 30/12/09

30/12/2009   I have just done some more work on Penzance Signal Box and i have took some more pics too. I feel now that it is starting to take shape . I now need to start work on the windows ( Not looking forward to this ).           Progress will be very slow from now on as i need to order some more plastic section etc.   Rob

Helix is complete.

Well last night i finished construction of the helix, I'm quite pleased this section of the layout is done now as i really enjoy watching the trains climb and decend the slope,(shame it'l be hidden) Its a fairly step gradient of 1 in 39 and i spent a few hours testing different formations of wagons and locos, Most stock is fine but the new JGA's are quite heavy and all the locos struggle except the Farish 60's. In a way i'm glad because it means i've got to use specific locos for freight trains.

Resumption of Construction on Blackwell Colliery

After nearly a year away from modelling the buildings and designing this layout, I figured it was about time work recommenced.   I will post images and text regarding the concept, design and construction of the layout. I am happy for anyone to comment and make suggestions on things they may like to see or feel could be added to improve on my vision.   I have a website for the layout which hasn't changed in nearly 12 months but this will change as progress is made. ED latest

Driveshafts arrived today, asked for a second one as I feel like doing another. Purchased a 73 body off of ebay and will go for full A1 body grills on this. Other parts will come from East Kent Models. The all in price of this one is likely to be around ??45.. The shaft supplied by Bachmann is 1mm shorter than I need and while this will engage both ends, I think it is better to extend it to the proper length. Next on my conversion list is something that purists may not like. But something Redga

More on my ED

All together now, apart from a driveshaft to the extended end. Just have to wait for that from Bachmann. I will get some photo's perhaps tomorrow. While I wait to see if I can get some new airhorns and grills, I have modified those fitted. Footsteps will need to be added to the bogies. But apart from that and despite all I have done to it, it looks pretty much as it did before the conversion .

A base...

Having got back after my christmas road trip I needed a project to fill up the rest of the holidays. Last year I replaced the lounge and kitchen floors*, but this year I decided to do something less drastic.   I took advantage of a fine (if a little chilly) day to cut some wood leftover from the big layout into suitable sized strips, and started making the baseboards. This is my first foray into plywood baseboards, and must say it is a bit different. Not having to cut all the mortise join

More work on buildings

A little more work on the buildings for the layout, Next step is starting to clad in the south east finecast block sheet, (which will hide the gaps between panels) after which I can get on with the detailing the sides. The roof will be the last thing to go on (given that the overhang will make access to the sides a bit more difficult to get at.)

DMU update 2

Made some good progress last night and tonight. Last night the ends were sprayed yellow, the bodies blue and the roofs grey. Good old Halfords paint meant I made quick progress.   Tonight has seen the weathering begin, based on a photo found on the internet. The rail blue has been faded and I've started applying a wash to highlight the detail.   Due to poor lighting I've not been able to take a photo of the weathering so far, but I did take a snap last night just after I'd sprayed the yellow

Cracking on a bit over Christmas

Well its two months since the last update. I'd like to say I have made massive progress but in reality it is only in the last few days I've found the time to work on the layout. I have, however, received my 4-CEPs and so far have chipped and run in one of the Green ones (the other green one arrived with one coach too many and one driving motor too few so am waiting for a swap).   Anyway, the depot conundrum from last blog has been resolved by cladding the Hornby depot with Wills corrugated met

first blog entry, my scratchbuilding ideas

hey folks,   new thing to me is this blogging....   anyway, i have started this thread to show my model railway which is in N scale, My Z gauge layout and any other model railway related junk (lol) that i want to share with you.   i am also going to attempt to scratchbuild models in 2mm scale, in other words N gauge, and this shall be a large learning curve for me, as i have never built any kits, or ever done a project like sratchbuilding before in my life.   i will update this blog a

Open the white box

Well I bought the kit from Judith Edge Kits at the Wigan Model Railway Exhibition. The white box arrived a few days later in the post. My wife then wrapped it for opening on Christmas Day.   Upon opening on Christmas Day I found it contained:   5 pages of instructions. Three brass sheets. A bag of nuts bolts etc. A bag of moulded plastic components. Five lengths of wire   Whilst at the Wigan show I also purchased from Alan Gibson:   3 sets of driving w

It begins...

For christmas, I've gotten a farish sprinter set and plenty of moneys, with which I will buy some more tracks tomorrow, and then I'll begin my layout. If anyone should happen to be reading this, I've two questions. First of all were the sprinters all powered? It doesn't seem like it on the trains themselves, but the model's got a power plant on both coaches. Secondly, where's the cheapest place to get board? I'm using one and half centimetre chip.

This is the day of the Tatras

Well, you guessed right - another small round of photos from Leipzig . The duty rosters were still a bit out of the ordinary today - few NGT12 sets were out, except for lines 7 and 15, line 12 was still served by single Leoliners and line 16 by NGT8 sets and at least two or three Tatra sets. I have no idea whether there might be any serious issues with the NGT12, though.       Having ridden down to Connewitz Kreuz I first snapped NGT8 car 1118 "Friedrich List" on line 9 to Markkleeberg We

Penzance Signal Box - up date pics

Have done a little more work on the signal box. Just hope it looks ok. I have cut and fitted the brick and planking overlays and opened up the window apertures. I have now started to put the main timber frame work on. More progress soon. (i hope)           Rob

First Running Session

Hi   Monday's first running session went very well, and a great time was had by all. Everyone was able to see their models run properly for the first time on meaningful trains, and there were a number of very broad grins on display. Tim also brought along his DCC controller and a sound equipped Hymek, but it wasn't on long enough for me to grab a photo (sorry Phill). The layout behaved very well considering that it had just been bolted together, and none of the rail ends had been fine-tuned be

The end for TT1

Last night also saw the final outing for TT1 before salvaging anything of use and scrapping the rest. So no more running until TT2 is operational (provides incentive!).   Here's the last set-up showing both TTs together       The end for TT1 was marked firstly with an enthusiasts' brake van special       And finally by an 08 with single brake van to collect the station furniture and any other bits and pieces     RIP TT1!     Captain Kernow additional comments on 29/12/

Partial set up last night

A diminished attendance at DRAG last night saw much of John's progress on about half of the boards and enabled a bit more track to be laid.         Here is the current stub-end on the two superelevated tracks     And Pete meanwhile has been making excellent progress on the master control panel, complete with automatic blanking out of DC power when DCC is plugged in and lots of indicator lights which the rest of us don't understand yet .
