Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Tackling the W/B b(ack)log - i) D5233 to D7603 tweak

This blog is to act as a conscience and reminder to crack on with the Sulzers now crowding onto the workbench, a return to working on locos in earnest after a few years' gap, and the first time I've had the nerve to open up new generation diesels.   First up are a quartet of Bachmann Brush Type 4s and a BR/Sulzer Type 2, which despite only coming onto the bench last night progressed rapidly today.   D5233 - D7603 tweak.   The output: 64B non-boilered 25/3 D7603 Waverley machine, from Bachm

Planning my coil steel fleet

Okay, here we go...   At one time or another, I've been into N-gauge modern (when "modern" meant "1982"), 3mm finescale Great Central Railway and N-gauge Union Pacific. Through much of that time I didn't pay much attention to what was happening on Britain's railways. Back in 2002, though, I travelled down to London for work and returned to Liverpool in the evening. I was quite surprised by the number of freight trains that I saw; and particularly impressed when my train stopped at Stafford alo

Snow Stops Play

Thanks to Matt for those pictures...   Annoyingly there was no club on Friday thanks to the weather, our club room is situated in a little village only accessable by single track backroads. As next Friday is Christmas Day and the following is New Years Day, we will reconvene on the 8th January; weather of course permitting.   This only leaves 4 club nights until the next show!   So for 2009 all that is left is to wish all a peaceful Christmas and a happy new year...

New Years Modelling Resoloutions

I've posted most of this else where on the forum, but figured it deserved padding out into a full blog post, will be interesting to come back to this in 6 months time and see how much is actually done...   My main modelling objective for the new year is to continue to thin down my fleet removing those items which are not fitting in with my plans. This list should hopefully only take me the first half of the year to get through (put unemployment to good use!) though I suspect if I get lucky and

Photing models

As an early Christmas present to myself, and to enable me to take better model snaps, I've purchased a couple of photo lights complete with flourescent daylight bulbs (technically they're 5400K Ra >90 which apparently means they're better than many others although I'm not sure I understand). Here's the portable set up;         Hopefully, I'll be able to take improved studio type snaps although I probably also need a decent new camera and a bit of tuition. I'll need to do a little bit o

Experimenting with weathering

Having recently aquired a few weathering powders, I have set off on two projects to use them, firstly, a hymek weathered mostly with powders, and secondly a 47 weathered with a mixed media approach, using washes, dry brushing and powders.   First completed is the hymek (there are a still a few bits left, like the staining on the bufferbeam cowling and add wire water fuel and coolant fillers. When I get round to it the pipework on the bufferbeam will be replaced, since IMHO the square main res

50007 SIr Edward Elgar

Goodevening - ive just finished 50007 this eveing - the final hurdle was glazing the new windscreens which is a job i hate doing - i think i managed to put it off for about a year. Along with the new windscreens this loco also had new bodyside louvres, has been lowered and converted to P4 to join its classmates. Hornbys first release of 50007 was finished as preserved but for my collection I need it in early 90s condition - so no snowploughs unfortunately - to backdate the model the

Roof top Water tower

With work and play halted outside, some work could get dome on the Orange Growers module. Of course it needs some work with an exhibition date at the end of January !!   Tonights materials.     A spray can lid, some sheet balsa cut into strips and a couple of plasticard off cuts.     The plan... To start making some roof top details, tonght a stair top roof door opening and a roof top water tank.... The ide is to pad out the detail without being to in your face. They can be seen at the

Too much snow is not good for train running !

Some where under here is a railway !!!     This next picture was after explorations yesterday, late evening prior to todays snow     We had a further 4" of snow today so outdoor running was totally out of the question !!!   I exposed some with a spade and as can be seen its getting on for 8 " walls either side of the track ...     So the only thing for it was to clear a path to the shed for some smaller scale modelling INDOORS     John

Nice pants (pantiles that is)

If you remember a few weeks ago I was moaning about the Slaters pantile embossed plasticard and it's lack of relief. I wanted something that had more relief and I could get the 3D effect on the ends of the roof showing overlapping tiles as well...   Well the answer I came up with was perhaps a little different from the norm but before I tell you how I did it, here is a photo which shows the end result. I'm really pleased, it looks just right to me and hopefully the idea will help other modelle

The main plan is 28ft long for the track layout but a small plan is something that we most do so that it can be posted. Diesels will be run on the layout, the running period is from steam days to present day. Class 20's, 31's
