Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

DMU

Well here is the DMU I've been rambling about for the past few days. Finally did some [not much] work on it yesterday, my first 'proper' railway modelling for months!   I admit that a lot of the work had already been done a few months back when I first started working on this, but I did a bit of tidying up of the model last night.   Plans for today are to prime the bufferbeams and try and get the underframe painted, if I can do that I'll be pleased and anything else will be a bonus!   I ma

Sulzer Breakthrough iii) Early Blue Brush Type 4s - and then there were two, 47148 - 1547

There's a pretty masthead for a blogger, eh!   1547 was i.d-theived yesterday, the method for mechanical removal of Bachmann's tampo printing is now pretty efficient, extending to the headcode glazing. I really like the side view of this livery, it is prototypical and looks plain wrong. In the sense that compared to two-tone green it's plain, and in location of all the decals it's so wrong compared to the standard blue of December 1968 on... You can imagine it in the drawing office after Bee

Introducing the Cassette and Slot fiddle yard...

This is my latest design for a fiddle yard. Based on many simple theories - cassettes, sector plates and turntables. As you can see, both the locomotive turntable and cassettes can rotate 360 degrees by way of a pin in a slot that runs the width of the fiddle yard. The area at the back stores two cassettes whilst the other one is being rotated. Whether someone has done it before I have no idea, but after many failed sketches I came up with what seems to be a feasible fiddle yard with little n

Christmas Sales - two lovely new coaches

Morning all,   Yesterday in th modelzone sale in guildford, I managed to pick up some bargins to complete two of my coach sets. My general rule is 3 coaches per set with at least 1/2 of one being first class. Well, I completed my Southern Maunsell Set (a Full First, Full Second, Second Brake and PMV) amd my Mk2 Blue/Grey set (BSO, SO and BFO).   Here they are plus another one of my christmas presents, a E.A.Robinson coal truck limited edition by Dapol for Gaugemaster. They're the ones in fro

Sand Dryer test colouring

I managed a bit of time today to carry out the test colouring of the end wall of the sand furnace. For a colour guide I chose to use some of my own colour slides from October 1965. These were taken using Agfa film which was always a little on the blue side so I have corrected this using Photoshop.     I have used an assortment of Berol Karisma crayons of various brick shades, some for the engineering brick and others for the more common 'red'. Having fixed the corbels I realised the crayo

All wheel drive for Lima ED.

I have now given the chassis a coat of satin black. I have put the motor back in and I have done the bogies. Tried various plastic solvents on the Lima sideframes. Nothing touched it. So back to the old standby, superglue. And once set, a fillet of epoxy is put around the joints. Belt and braces approach Bogies back in in the morning. Initially it will be driving on two axles, just until I get a new driveshaft from Bachmann. Then I can set to work on the body. I know the glazing will have

A Class 66 fleet

A start of a project I have been meaning to get on with for a while now, a sequence of blog posts detailing the stock for the layout starting off with my Class 66s.   The work: Conversion to P4 has been completed using the Bachmann gears with Keen Maygib wheels on the outer axles and black beetle wheels on the centre axles. DCC is either by Lenz Golds, or loksound (although the loksound fitted locos are intended to revert back to golds and have the sound reblown as something a little more i

All wheel drive for Lima ED.

Right, well I've given it a bit of a cure close to a radiator and decided to get the two parts joined back together. Side plates added for extra strength. Pretty much all I will get done today now. Leaving it over a radiator again for 2-3-hours to make sure the epoxy is well cured. I may just give it a quick once over with matt black. Tomorrow I will start putting it back together. Although the first job is to put the side frames onto the bogies.

Seeing Double !

With the festive season in full swing a new addition to the fleet has arrived joining 60006 as the second Brooke Stone Quarry allocated construction 60.   005, 010 & 100 will arrive in due course to complete the allocation of 5.   Another conversion from a Hornby Mainline 077 example, Simon has done a superb job with Hither Green diamonds, cast arrows, re numbering and construction block transfers.   The job is completed with 001's signature grey snowplough which it didnt keep for long

All wheel drive for Lima ED.

Fed up with the poor performance on my Lima locos, I embarked on a plan to rid them all of their awful pancake motors. Already I had fitted extra pick-ups and this had made a considerable improvement. Enough so that I may yet leave my bubblecar and xGWR railcar. But for my ED I wanted to go for drive on all axles. My first thought was to use a Heljan Clayton chassis if I could get hold of a reject one. However, after a good look at mine, I decided that it would be best to use something more subs

The Big Thaw - more trains in the DEEP snow

Merry Christmas to all !! I hope Santa brought you all you wanted !     On Christmas Eve i decided to dig the outdoor railway out from under about 8" of snow, I had already cleared the driveway and paths for about the 4th time so was out anyway.   Once dug out it would have been rude to not run a couple of trains ?!?!   With the Christmas family gatherings this moring has been the first chance I have had to compile and post the footage to YouTube.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmspa

Christmasy blog entry1

Well Another Christmas day gone almost, and can say it was a good one today, with me "playing trains" with the present from the family of 101692, sadly not a loco, but still this unit will be a good detailing and rework project none the less!   An extensive list of improvements and detailing by me has been penciled in but the usual job will be to detail the bufferbeams, get some form of working lights, and correct the livery errors, as well as new bogie sideframes and a rework of the underfram

On vacation in Leipzig again

Well, this morning saw us grab our suitcases and head off for our end of year vacation to Leipzig . We had a good dinner already, and now I am well and thoroughly tired.   There's hardly any snow left in Leipzig - though where there are some patches left on the cobblestone streets it can be dicey to be walking on it! And it is quite windy tonight.   Immediately after arriving at Leipzig Central Station with ICE 1597 I proceeded to snap one of the 182-hauled RE services which operate between

coombe junction - 4mm

Happy Christmas to all! The title is not a misprint, early April fool, nor the result of too much red wine but an exercise that has been flying around in my head for a while and I just wanted to see how feasible it would be.   On the last RMWeb3, there were comments that it would be interesting to build Coombe Junction in 4mm - Seeing as how I have started to build up an appropriate amount of BR blue rolling stock for the layout I am building my sons [i will set that blog up next year] it occu

A wonderfull Christmas time

I have just been surprised and delighted by receiving a DJH 7mm A4 with Corridor tender along with Slaters wheels and plunger pickup's. Even more encouraging is the 12 metres of Peco track that accompanied it.   I followed it up by suggesting to the wife that I now needed some LNER coaches to go with it.   I have to admit that like others I don't think that the blog is generating the same type of interest and dialogue that the traditional thread does. So when I post updates on my coach bu

Ready for inaugural running session

Hi   I've spent a fair chunk of the last two days in a frenzy of tidying after the big push in December to get the layout runnable. The inaugural running session takes place on Monday, so the room has to look its best; besides which, I couldn't find anything, and it was getting a bit frustrating. So everything is in its place, the boards have been vacuumed, and the carpet is down.   Since it won't be this tidy again for months, I took a few photos. I haven't cropped any of these so you can s

E-Z Command

And now onto the EZ Command/Hell.   I got it today with a number of Hornby Decoders and installed the system exactly as it said to in the Instructions on a separtate line using track from the set. Placed My class 25 on it for a quick test run to see if it all works which it did to my relief even if i was making more noise than I expected........   As the 25 was my only DCC fitted engine, I decided to try one of my many 0-4-0 Club member models on the DC mode. No response from either the solo

Somewhat relieved...

It's official: Hornby is making the Thompson L1 for 2010.   Therefore sadly I am cancelling my kitbash, but turning towards making something else using the same pieces I picked up for the L1. Another thompson machine perhaps...   I am thrilled by the presence of an Express Passenger blue A4 train pack set - I will buy two, one to match with a non-corridor tender and rename/number, and the other to keep as is to match that one.   That, and the absolutely stunning USA Tour Flying Scotsman...

EPBs

A bit of attention has turned back to my pair of EPBs, a 2EPB and 4EPB (both BR build) from the DC Kit. While neither of them are of use for the layout, having been long since withdrawn, it does give another unit to play with........   the 2 EPB is already half painted in NSE so will have to finish it off and paint the other one in the summer.   The 4 EPB is currently primed awaiting painting, rather than spray in NSE which will be rather hard work to get to a decent standard. I was thinkin

Centenary coaches the work continues

I've been in Leeds for the last couple of weeks doing some 12 inch to the foot modelling - that is decorating my old house in an effort to make it presentable to potential buyers.   My partner and I have found somewhere we want to buy here in Redditch but we need to sell the old homestead first. Hopefully all will go smoothly and as soon as I'm allowed I can start building a layout to run these trains on.   Anyway having got back last Sunday I've been busy building the two dining cars for th
