Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

19. the Diesel Refuelling Point and Old Turntable

The OO Garden Shed   By John Geeeee   Hi All.   May I take the opportunity to wish you all a merry Christmas.   I have started work on a diesel refuelling point. It still needs weathering and once in place I will also add some pipework to join it to the two storage tanks.               I have also done some work on the first Dapol turntable. I have replaced the plastic rail post, that I kept breaking, with a rail and posts from brass wire. I have also added some decki

Sand Dryer Kit

It's been a few days since I last did any work on the model, not that I've been idle. I have been doing some more research with a trip to Bath Green Park Station to measure up and photograph the roof support columns. Thanks to the Taunton MRC with their Superb 'Bath Green Park' layout; seen recently at the Wigan show; I have a ready made source of white metal columns. A package arrived this morning from Colin alias Alan Gibson Mk2 complete with a Christmas card... a nice touch. I'll add a photo

O gauge workbench.....Motorail flat up-date

Here are some pics of the progress so far on my second Motorail flat. I still have some work to do but it is nearly finished. The work to do consists of wheel choc's to be made and fitted, NOT TO BE LOOSE SHUNTED transfers to be added (to both flats) and a tail-light as this flat has a dropped buckeye because it will be the end of the rake. .I hope to do some work over the christmas break on the third flat. The rest of the rake will consist of 2x FO and 2x FK,these will be Easybuild Mk1's (not y

Southeast Steam Railway - 1 year on!

Hi Guys,   Now that we are coming to the end of 2009, I thought what I have done in the past year. It feels like I have done nothing, but you'll see form the photos, that there has been quite a lot done!,   So the first couple of weeks of January, the layout looked like this:     Now in the last couple of weeks in December, it looks like this:     It's amazing what you can do in a year!   Over the year we have added three more locos to the fleet:   Bachmann Class

How inept was I in 2009

So as I sit here at the end of another modelling I find myself asking the question, what on earth did I actually do? Back in January my layout looked like this       Some 12 months later and after numerous restarts I have finally build the terraced houses but am still no where near finishing the shops, so it now looks like this     The wierd thing is I feel I have spent ages in the shed this year but do not have loads to show for it. Could this be because for the first time I have c

More on Class 73s...

Some Research: Having spent some time suffering fotopic on a day when it seems to not work for more than it works, I've come up with a few links to photos of the stock being modelled.   73109, Battle of Britain in South West Trains, http://martinchealsl.../p56833405.html Not dated (and with the late logo) heres 109 rescuing a stranded Freightliner http://steve-clark.f.../p45510980.html 2002 with a hybrid livery http://johnlawonther.../p36959638.html Tricky loco this one, given it ca

Comparison

Jam, specially for you, here's a comparison shot of the layout taken almost a year apart! Shows what slow progress I've made!       Not in exactly the same place and I dont have the 31 with me unfortunately, but it gives you an idea - I think a real embankment would grow faster!

Sulzer breakthrough ii) 47148 - 1536 i.d.swap

Here's a festive post for the vanishingly small number of you who have ever heard of 'Early Blue' on Brush Type 4s, and the swelling ranks of Waverley Route afficianados.   Take one Bachmann 47148, in Bachmann's esoteric original 'tri-grille' configuration, the trailing edge of a Stanley blade, pencil eraser, screwdriver and sheet of Howes rub-down transfers for a real retro modelling feel.   The end result, as applied to fewer than 20 locos, but representing a York machine that worked the l

Deltic Prototypes - a start

While I wait for the new year to start the Mikado I am pottering around with the first of two DP1s on the bench. Over the years I have amassed a quantity of conversion kits/bits etc for DELTIC and now find I have enough for TWO! The first is for me - Dapol body with A1 grilles etc, Fox transfers and plates, SE Finecast flushglaze and a Bachmann Deltic chassis. The idea is to produce a good loco but 1/3 of the price of an NRM one.   The Second loco will be a Craftsman conversion kit applied to

A parcel for Mr Ahern

Our story begins inside a parcels van on the Westbury to Farthing stopping train. The parcel in the middle is of particular interest to us. It is addressed to a Mr Ahern at No. 7, Memory Lane, Farthing.         Safely arrived in the bay at Farthing, the parcels are handled by Porter P.W. Saunders. The one for Mr Ahern is under his hand. The flat package in front contains a scientific manuscript, in which a certain A. Einstein proposes that space and time are not con

Class 73s

Given the slight change in focus of the layout, Class 73s are suddenly useful again. The plan is to do a rebuild focusing on the chassis for now, rebuild with Bachmann 25 power, full separate underframe, bogie steps. Will fit the old Shawplan roof grills for now at least, and hope for some better parts.   I have one model thats been fitted with etched grills for the side grills, and needs new cantrail grills to replace broken parts. I would like to replace the lot, and probably will if some de

Prototype photo's

Many of the photo's published have come from various collections, a few of which are available for purchase. I've collected a few from The Transport Treasury and from the HMRS Photo collection. Both of whom have very graciously allowed me to publish a selection on this blog.   So as a reminder the map is shown below   Starting from the East side, where the later station is situated, first we come to the shed area alongside Station Street with the raised coaling stage. Multiplying Tenders

I know it's been awhile since my last post but life the universe (aka wife) and everying have managed to take priority over some real work!   Anyway, I've finished cleaning up the tender body for the K3 and have invested in some silicone rubber and casting resin to attempt to make some copies. I was lucky enough to catch Jon Hall doing a casting demonstration at the St. Albans exhibition a couple of years ago and by and large I have been trying to replicate his techniques. However I have still

Started work on the quayside

A day off on Friday allowed time to start track building on the lower quayside area of the layout. This bit of the layout is a bit of an 'Enigma Engineering' inspired shunting puzzle, I might even resort to waybills so I can shunt different bits of the pickup goods down to the lower yard. I know one end of the section is going to be a coal yard, but I'm not sure about the other end yet, possibly a scrap yard? The intention is for this track to be inlaid, so copper-clad sleepers and lots of check

Ffestiniog Railway photos

Another set of photos transferred over from RMweb3 - this time of the FR, with some in the snow - from sometime around 2005 - 2007 (they were dated on my old PC before it died )   Hope they're of use/enjoyment to some; as is becoming standard form on this blog, here's a taster:

City of Truro to P4

Well its finally arrived...     At the moment I have the model upside down, and assuming that Bachmann havent gone with some odd axle diameter, it looks like the conversion is going to be very straight forward. The break gear will all have to be removed (and will need to be replaced with brass to get it to fit) but other than that it all looks very easy. Not sure what to do with the cranks (I've never brought outside framed wheels for a kettle before, so I assume they come with cranks in

Hythe Parkway - Magazines again!

Hi Guys,   After talking to Steve Flint of Railway Modeller at both the HW&DMRS open day and Warley, he has emailed me to confirm that he would like Hythe in Railway Modeller during 2010!   Not sure when the photoshoot will take place, but it will be in the New Year (I need to get on with those cassettes!!!)   Hopefully we will be taking Hythe upto the High Wycombe clubrooms for the photoshoot and just check everything is fine, plus fix a few things   Simon

D333 comparison

Here's another shot of my part finished D333 ex-LNWR coach taken from a similar angle (but a rather drunken angle and poorly lit, in my case) to the shot Coachman has put on his blog - I would have posted this as a comment or reply to Larry but can't find a way to put photos into either. Anyway, here's my coach again for comparison. I've just noticed that although this is an ex-LNWR diagram, I've fitted standard LMS buffers (only the stocks, so far) rather than the LNWR types on Larry's example

It's been a year

Hi,   First time I've made a new post in ages, not done any railway modelling in months, lack of enthusiasm, no internet etc etc etc. Got me thinking that 12 months ago I repainted/weathered and detailed my old Lima Class 31, how time has flown!     Going to try and ease myself back in while I have a few days off and do some work on the Class 117 DMU that I started working on ages ago - no promises though!

A1 Models Hunslet footplate and bonnet.

This is my 3rd etched kit. I started with the footplate, as you do. Rivets punched out the bufferbeams were laminated together from 2 pieces. Whilst doing this I noticed that the holes for the buffers are out of line with each other! Solder now, sort later...     Bonnet next. Punching out the rivets made it bend so I had to straighten it after. I use a slide-hammer type riveter.     Top curved the bonnet was bent up and the front soldered in place. However there were big gaps around t

Is it that long ?

It's been a while since I posted here and having to warm the shed up before working out there in this weather has led to a loss of enthusiasm . However I have not been completely idle. I have coverted one of my Hornby Stanier firsts into 'porthole' type. Comet sides. Quite pleased with the outcome and may do one of the old Mainline 60' ones.   Few odds and ends to do yet. Grab handles, extra footsteps on corridor side and I need to adjust the compartment arrangement. Not sure if they ever
