Coastguard Creek - 15 months of planning!

    By SouthernRegionSteam

Hold on to your socks - this is going to be a lengthy one! (In fact it's so long, I've now split it into 2 separate posts - the next will be up soon...)   I think it's fair to say that you are all long overdue an update on Coastguard Creek. Due to other commitments, no real progress has been made since the last post way back in March 2021; almost 15 months ago! If anything, things went backwards for quite a while, as I kept finding more and more inspiring locations that I really wanted

Funny kind of nostalgia... preservation memories

I had a lovely weekend visiting both the Llangollen Railway and the old Manchester Ship Canal Railway at Ellesmere Port...   Saturday I headed over to Llangollen. It's my favourite preserved railway - really beautiful scenery and in recent years it has also really tidied up the sidings and yards along the route and appers much more clean, tidy and professional. Very well presented!   Anyway it was a sunny day and my daughter wanted to travel on a diesel and a steam engine. We started at Carr

St. Simon's Workbench - Transfers on!

Hi Guys,   I managed to get the transfers I need for the Horse Box at Ally Pally on Saturday, varnished it on Sunday and spent a relaxing half an hour putting them on (while watching Tornado on Top Gear!):     I've think I've got the numbers in the wrong place, plus I've managed to mislay the wheels!   Whilst I was at it, I put the transfers on the two Shingle Train wagons, the numbers I've put on aren't in the pool list I have, but they are the closest I had! I haven't made the 'sea

the DCC bug and turntables

I decided I wanted to try DCC, and having helped film the BRM DVD for the Select I knew what I was in for if I bought that. I got one and wired it up and having got over the initial problems I suffered (compatability issues with Bachmann decoders) it worked reasonably well though it sometimes crashes if you get it too confused!   One thing I had been wondering about was what to do around my loco spur. Its quite an expanse of board space to fill up and I couldn't decide what to do with it. N

And more electrics...

Hello   I have this week off work (woohoo!) and one of my goals is to finish off the electrics and actually get something working on the layout, after all its only been about 4 years now plus I think people will get a bit bored at shows if nothing actually works!   Anyway, day 1 of my break this is how far I have got...     The control panel is now 90% finished. I just need to fix some magnets to it to hold the top bit down (which are on order)     Apart from bits like uncouplers

Marking Time

This is by way of a holding entry - because of a difficult period at work I've not managed to do any modelling for about 6 weeks, and consequently there's been nothing to report. I was really hoping to make some serious progress on the backlog this year , only life comes along and throws a spanner in the works...   However I did manage to get to Ally Pally this weekend, and while I was there managed to purchase some laser cut flush glazing for the Bratchill 150 from Shawplan. I gather these a

Improved Weathering

Hi   Here are a couple of photos of the weathering re done as suggested. Mk1 looks much better (compare old heavy weathering with new version). I am also pleased how the new super fine ballast looks. Much better than previous rocks! Few new ground signals as well.   Chris

Sunday supplement...

In today's lovely spring sunshine a fantastic excuse to nip down to Ellesmere Port presented itself...   My 2 year old daughter needed a nap and wouldn't settle at her grandparents - so I offered to take her out for a drive! She was off within the first 5 minutes! Anyway I headed down to Ellesmere Port docks first, to the location of the old MSC Railway engine shed. From here I traced the line up to Eastham before heading back on myself to Stanlow. These shots won't set the world on fire but s

Maunsells

I'm sure we've all got models lurking half finished in boxes, and it's always good to get them finished. Both of these Maunsell coaches were started in 2000 and are now finished.   The Roxey Nondescript brake was in my blog unpainted a year ago. It got half painted, then stripped down and repainted as I wasn't happy with the finish.   The First has been lurking in a painted but unglazed state for years, as it was a very early effort where I didn't pay much attention to how to fit the glazi

Where from?

Right well so, someone suggested that N Gauge Setrack was perfect for an HOe fiddle yard... Next time I got anywhere near a train shop, I walked out with the N Setrack starter set, a GWR autotrain and some goods wagons...   Playing around for a few evenings, both with that and my HOe Austrian sets, made me think that N gauge is real possibility! I'm not so good at building small structures, but there are many pre-made models, so that's alright.   Now as for the layout, I saw a layout called

Extreme Etchings - more class 50s

Goodevening - At Alexandra Palace Brian Hanson gave me some new class 50 bits to try - first up , a set of etchings for the exhausts - this corrects the panel on the Hornby model which is too long - theres also a pair of surrounds for the other two exhaust ports.     heres the panel rolled to shape and fitted with Devcon - theres two small etches to add which I've attached with gloss varnish.   The replacement exhauts ports , fitted again with varnish. Station roof progress

Decision made,   After a couple of mock ups and some thinking I decided the station roof should be tiles of the stone variety...       and in this last picture a couple of the "glass" panes have been slid in to see how they look     John

Stanier Brake Van & boards

Evening all   I've sorted out a shortage of fitted brake vans highlighted at the last show with a view for York next weekend. Always amazing what a deadline does. It was made up from a Connoisseur kit which has been lurking in the cupboard for ages. Sprung with Bill Bedford w irons and packed with lead. Also gave the R&H a run out this afternoon. It's a flight of fancy really but will end up being a works shunter. I'll probably paint it red (it's going to be called James) though it really

J39 - painted chassis

As I had to take the chassis apart to solder the brake hangers on (they were too close to the wheels for comfort) I opted to paint the chassis while everything was accessible. The frames were brush painted with some enamel primer and the a coat of Humbrol matt black, which amazingly dried matt. I then picked out the valve gear with some Humbrol gun metal to give a slightly shiny look of steel. A quick blast of acrylic railmatch 'frame dirt' has toned it down a bit.   Another task completed wa

rewheeling Heljan Class 15

I found getting the body off a bit nerve racking. The instructions with the loco are rather non-specific to say the least. Trying to work out how much force to exert while terrified you are going to break something isn't really my idea of fun. Still, needed to be done as i want to get a decoder in.   The actually rewheeling is quite straightforward. The bottom keeper plate on the chassis pops off with a small screwdriver under each catch on one side. There is an arrow on the inside of the mold

Class 323 Conversion

Well with working on the layout being hard for me at the moment I have been acquiring the bits to start work on conversion kit produced by Etched Pixels for converting a class 159 DMU into a class 323 EMU. Aside from a few bits of kit like paint and filler I am ready to get started on this project, plus with it being a sit down job then it might not be so bad for me at the moment.   Indeed this is a total break from the SNCF layout I have been constructing for some time now, however I have al

Decisions Decisions

I had planned on my evening modelling session centering around the non glazed section of the station roof (seen in white on the last picture) but now I am unsure on the way forward.   Option 1. Steel sheet Option 2. Corrugated sheet Option 3. Slates   I was planning on option 1. but during the course of the morning I have been favouring 3.   Any thoughts or opinions , if not watch this space...   John

Multiple Units...

Another item on the to do list is insure all my stock for travel to exhibitons, so I've been doing a bit of cataloguing today (and terrified myself with the total cost of my fleet!), and looking at my multiple units, I thought how great it was to have so many different types available in N. When I first started out, there was the Farish 101 and that was it. What a change over time though!   The workhorses of the railway network, MUs were always neglected in model form while there were the mor

Rolling stock for North Marsh Road

One of the wagons I remember see round Kings Lynn during my childhood was the red curtain sided Campbell soups pallet wagon.   As these do not exist as RTR and so as a bit of a sideline I am looking into a wagon scratch building project, to this end I have just bought 8 blank wagon body shells.   I have created a new topic in the Kit building & Scratchbuilding modelling Zone to record the build progress, it can be found here - Campbell Soups wagon - A scratch build project.   In the me

A quiet little corner.

Amazing what you can get done in a few days with no work or female interference !!     As you will have seen from some of the photos in my gallery, work on scenics has begun and the first 2ft of 6ft is about where I want it. Really feel like my scenic work has come on a little from previous projects, the secret I think, is taking your time, using the higher priced end range of materials and taking the time to tidy up each section after the glue has dried with tweezers, picking out all thos

Delayed action magnetic tension locks

Part of the reason for slow progress on Whitemarsh Yard is that I've been held up by needing to get reliable working couplings and install uncouplers before ballasting can go ahead.     I did some experiments with Brian Kirby's magnetic tension locks and came away quite happy, but when I started thinking about siting magnets I was less happy - even for a small layout like Whitemarsh you need quite a few. Plus because I didn't install them before laying the track, each uncoupler requires cut

A tree for Tanis

So back at the tail end of last year I built this A3 layout in three weeks. I was quite pleased with it, and thought I could take it to the 2010 Convention in NZ and enter it in the A3 competition at Easter. I had a long list of things to finish/fix/improve and plenty of time to get them done in the interim.   Fast forward a few months and we're flying down to Christchurch for the convention next Thursday, and Tanis hasn't had any of the attention I wanted to give it until last Friday night. To renumber or Not to renumber

Morning all,   After looking long and hard at my 3 Bullieds side by side, 2 Blackmoor Vales and a Torrington, I've decided to renumber/name 1 possibly 2 of them into other machines. One of the Blackmoor Vales will become 21C119 'Bideford' and my Torrington might become 34066 'Spitfire'. Originally, I was only going to rename one of my Blackmoor Vales origninally but on looking into the BoBs and WCs, I discovered that Torrington had been rebuilt which for my layout, is kind of pointless as I o
