All the motor bikes reach at least 88 mph at weekends on the local roads, so just harness one of those!

I have no idea what you mean....:angel:

 

Besides, my bike's dynamo's only produce about 7.5 volts, unless the regulator is acting up. The magneto ignition puts out around 18-20,000v @ 0.5A, which I suspect would do something quite rude to a DCC controller.

It's a modification you see quite regularly on C&HPR locos, the weather could be quite fierce up on the tops of the Derbyshire moorland where the railway ran, and so they built these extra doors out of wooden pallets and sacking to try and keep the wind, rain and snow out of the cab.

Locos on the Wissington railway in Norfolk had similar modifications because of the way the east wind blows across the Fens.

And here it is as it arrived this morning:

So I wasted no time, and soon had it dismantled:

I concentrated on the running gear first.

In period photos, it can be seen that what the C&HPR did was to remove the middle axle from these, so they would go round the sharp curves of the line, so my first job was to fit a new blade to the scalpel, and start carving off the middle axlebox from the chassis:

With the blood cleaned off it looks quite presentable...

 

 

Next I turned my attention to the tender body.

 

The coal is of course moulded on as part of the structure of the top:

So, as we want to remove the coal altogether I had no alternative but to bring out the Dremel and the slitting disc, and cut all the top away:

I then cut a piece of 80thou black styrene to fit and glued it in place:

With a bit of filler to hide the gaps

That more or less concludes the butchery, so the surviving bits were carted off and given a couple of coats of Matt Black from an aerosol.

I took it to the layout for better lighting than the kitchen counter:

I was pretty happy with how it looked, so I took it off for a bit of weatherage:

Yep, I'm quite pleased with how that's turned out, a fitting addition to the fleet, I think.

When you take the middle axle plus axlebox out you’re left with a large rectangular gap, rather than a axle sized round hole, with a tiebar across the bottom. I fancy the spring and hangers would go as well, leaving lugs riveted to the frames.

Thank you, it's a pleasure to be inspiring in some way.

I would imagine that the middle axle was taken out if either:

The tank was being used somewhere with stupidly tight curves.

So you win there.

The tender wheels and axleboxes were well worn and the cheapest solution on a minor line was to cobble up a tank wagon that had a minimum of wearing surfaces out of the least worn parts. The middle axle would be more prone to wear anyway.

So you win there.

I didn't pull the middle axle out of mine, never crossed my mind, but it makes more sense. 

All I did was paint as you had and then had the word WATER in off white 6" high sans serif each side.

Al,

 

In general the later Midland tenders were left as 6-wheelers, I think because they were introduced in the 60s, after Middleton Incline was closed and water traffic came in from Buxton. The former LNWR tenders always did have the centre axle removed, and could therefore be used for the remaining water traffic up Sheep Pasture Incline.
