I wonder if the american railroad that operated 1 of these would be interested in purchasing them.

I say that because from replies we have all seen, they were quite impressed with the set so possibly it would be an opportunity to make some money for uk rail by selling the 142/143 & 144s subject to the railroad company being interested.

It occurs to me that they might have found some alternative rolling stock in the intervening 35 years?

Anyone hazard a guess as to the location of this one? About 1984.

It's 141001 with Leeds in the destination blind, on a 4-track electrified line.

I don't have my notes for the film, but the adjacent scans are in London, at Liverpool St and Farringdon. Could it be on the southern end of the Midland main line? Annoyingly the electrification post number is cut off, but the line above 15 might be 20.

Much later edit: Elstree. Thanks to Clive Mortimore (see below in thread)

Even later edit: it was 18 Jan 1984. I'd been for a ride on the new 317s from Farringdon to Elstree, and saw 141001 in Cricklewood sidings/depot. Then it came north on the slow lines. Did I have a tip-off? Not sure.

It might not work, but hey, its a thought.

The one they operated is still over there and is subject to disposal since December 2018..

See item number 11 in the disposal list..

Oh dear. I thought it was class 170’s on that service these days. Unless, of course, one was out of service for maintenance.

Rob.

Was all 170s and 150s on the Harrogate line when I visited a couple of weeks back. Don't Northern have a random unit generator any more?

Hi Mr Divide

It could be Elstree and Borehamwood. The car park is north of the station on the side of the slow lines and the OLE is cantilever mast for a short stretch not the usual headspan found on the MR London Extension. Plus it is 12 and a bit miles out from St Pancras, or 20 and a bit Km.

Thanks Mr More.

I think that fits nicely - the gentle curve, the overbridge, the lie of the land at https://goo.gl/maps/h61KqumDmY1vopcy8 all seem to tally up.

What it was doing there is anyone's guess

All the best,

Mr Divide

(aka Chris, who must get round to changing his forum name to something more personal and less prone to misinterpretation. It seemed like a good idea at the time, being a southerner living in the north).

There are still a couple of 14x/15x diagrams, anything which needs to run as a 4 car for example, either for capacity  or to ferry a set to be used later (17.41 off York for example is always a 14x, detached from another earlier in the day. ) There are more 170s in traffic but they have also been deployed on Leeds to Selby and Huddersfield, and they take over Sheffield - Hull - Brid  from May.

I didn’t know 170’s are going up to Bridlington from the May timetable change. It would make sense of those I’m seeing at Hull Paragon - driver training presumably.

Rob.

That's my understanding - driver training between Hull and Doncaster on class 170 - it's been ongoing for about the last 5 weeks.

Crows Nest Junc' Hindley, Lancs' 29-4-19. 1.40pm. 142 020. Such a shame that this lovely fast turning Green corridor might mostly all go now that planning for home building on the Green spaces has been given in this area.

And as I was leaving towards Starcross, another dual 143 set came down to form the 16:05 to Barnstaple!

I do hope that at least one set of 143/144 pacers get saved. I've always found them a much more stylish unit, even though they are still bargain basement trains....

It might be worth starting a book on which is the first Northern 142 to go off lease.  My bet would be on 142026 judging from the state of the bodywork.  Any one got some Isopon?
