RMweb Gold Market65 Posted December 17, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 17, 2019 Today, on Sheffield Midland station, at 15.40, was a five car 144 at platform one, on a service to York, formed of three car 144014 and two car 144007. 007 was locked out of use with no internal lighting. And here’s a side view of the graffiti attacked 144003. I will not be doing that to the lovely Realtrack model... Best regards, Rob.

Jack Mc
Living alongside the Sheffield - Barnsley line means that, whilst growing up, seeing a 142, 144, 150, 158 and occasionally a 153 has become part of everyday life for me. However, despite photographing and filming them in places such as Doncaster, Leeds and York, photographing them closer to home was never something I've really done. However, with the withdrawal of Pacers now well underway in the region I've decided to get a picture of one whenever there's a chance. So, run up to Christmas, and there's not been a 142 passed us for a couple of days to my knowledge, however 144s are continuing as usual. 5/12/19 - 144019 at Elsecar on a Sheffield - Huddersfield service. This route was almost exclusively a three-car 144, however from early October 158s became regular on it. It was a nice surprise to see these therefore make a bit of a comeback; at a guess it's probably 50/50 between the two classes on this service now. 10/12/19 - 144021 at Elsecar on a Huddersfield - Sheffield service 12/12/19 - 144019 at Barnsley on a Sheffield - Huddersfield service. Little bit off topic, but it's worth mentioning the slight alteration to Barnsley Interchange. For the festive period, the station has been rebranded "Barnsleigh Interchange", and it's one of a few stations that has been rebranded for Christmas, I think based on where they donate most to charity. 16/12/19 - 144023 at Meadowhall 144021 at Elsecar An unidentified 144 in the carriage siding complex immediately South of Sheffield 144023 at Sheffield 144013 at Sheffield 144007 at Sheffield 144008 (with 007 in the foreground) at Sheffield 144016 at Elsecar 18/12/19 - 144001 The Penistone Line Partnership at Elsecar... ... and then Barnsley, alongside 150204 The fairly rapid rate at which the 142s have disappeared from the line has given me a bit more incentive to make sure there is some evidence of Pacers on a line which they have dominated since their introduction. eastwestdivide
Nice set Jack Mc - good to see some interiors especially. I might find time later to do a quick survey around Rotherham and see if any turn up. Edited December 19, 2019 by eastwestdivide 1
eastwestdivide
Right then. As promised, a quick half an hour or so on the canal footbridge at Rotherham Parkgate, as the clouds darkened and gave way to rain, 4/5 possible services turned up with a Pacer. 399206 on the 1327 Sheffield Cathedral to Parkgate (3 late) (missing in action = cancelled, the 1324 Adwick to Sheffield) ..... 144021 on the 1248 Leeds to Sheffield (18 late) 144002 on the 1332 Sheffield to Doncaster (16 late) As a bonus, the Exol Pride on an empty oil products run from Exol Lubricants in Rotherham to somewhere on Humberside. Unfortunately not while there was a train going by. 144003 on the 1315 York to Sheffield, graffiti, (5 late) 144013 on the 1405 Sheffield to Adwick (5 late) Cuckoo in the nest - 158815 on the 1405 Doncaster to Sheffield (3 late) 399203 on the 1400 Sheffield Cathedral to Parkgate (2 late) Photos on the fixed focal length 50mm lens with a wide aperture, as the light was so bad - mostly 1/400s, ISO 800, f/1.8.
RMweb Gold TravisM Posted December 19, 2019 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 19, 2019 I see that 142049 has headed to Gascoigne Wood along with 142042, so my friends attempt to save it is probably out the window.
pacerfan
Yesterday, two 142s coupled together were on the Kirkby line seen at Pemberton station at 18:23. I did not get the unit numbers as it was dark and I was driving. Today I have only seen 150/1s on the line.
RMweb Premium newbryford Posted December 20, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 20, 2019 (edited) Up until a few years ago, 142s were "banned" on my local line - nobody seems able to give a definitive answer why. However, since then, they have been appearing with regularity - more so it seems over the last few months. What was very rare - were 158s other than on the Sunday Dalesrail. This all changed earlier this week, when two out of the four or so diagrams were 158s. Today - I saw at least three of the diagrams - one was a 3-car 158758, the second a 158/153 combo and this: (A quick grab shot between golf holes!) Passing Langho. This may be my last photo of 142s in service - having seen the very first GMPTE liveried versions on test when new. Seriously, "Barnsleigh on the platform indicators? I get the whole changing the sign to sound like something Christmassy, it's slightly amusing, and if anyone is walking into the station they probably already know they're in Barnsley. But to have it on screens elsewhere...?! OK, I know now what the joke is, so does everyone else reading. But if I'd turned up and read that, I'd have been left wondering if someone had spelt it wrong. It's not the most obvious connection. It's not too much of a stretch that there could be a place called Barnsleigh, after all there are many similar sounding and similarly spelt place names on the network. And what about those who don't speak English as a first language, of whom there are many, if you don't know what the word sleigh is, and the connection to Christmas, it doesn't take much to see someone missing a train. Imagine you're waiting for a train to Montpellier, and the board said Montpeleton. Would you catch it? Well, sorry, you just missed your train, we changed it because the Tour de France was passing through and someone thought it was amusing. Sorry, I do get the joke, but think it's completely ill thought through, changing the name just for a bit of fun is just daft. I know people will say "but everyone knows what it is", which is fine for those who travel all the time on that line. But its madness for anyone who doesn't! Wheatley
It's unlikely to confuse foreign visitors to Barnsley, they aren't encouraged. RMweb Premium ColinK Posted December 22, 2019 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 22, 2019 Inspired by this thread and the article in the latest Model Rail, I decided to improve the Pacer I bought recently at Workington exhibition. So I ordered the the remotoring kit from Branchlines which arrived yesterday. Then I remembered I had looked at the second hand Pacer at Workington several times, but it was just before pay day so I didn’t buy it! So now I’m looking for preferably a GMPTE Liveried Pacer, although a Provincial blue one will do.
