Nor will I!

Every now and again people will wear their "I was there" war reminiscences in conversation; a remarkable event which underlined a major armchair level of participation.

It was a great weekend though, apart from the finances :)

Andy - would it be possible to turn off/disable the gold medallion and any other indicators of gold membership on the site (except toadmins) if a member wanted to financially support the site, gain GM benefits but not stand out in any way?

Yes. See earlier today: https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/143518-rmweb-gold-a-new-premium-membership/&do=findComment&comment=3516377

I am looking at an additional level, that of Purist. Your avatar is a sheet of brass and a soldering iron, you won't get any benefits (in fact many forum features will be removed), you won't be allowed to access any RTR manufacturers sub-forums and the system will automatically post in any MRJ topic that you are looking forward to reading this issue.

Don't forget the hairshirt.

Just signed up via a very nice young lady who took my details. Conveniently the April 2019 issue of BRM was the last on my Pocketmags subscription.

I've even managed to get almost immediate access to the back number library and my Android tablet.

I already have Railway Modeller through Exact Editions and tried to see if I could access the downloaded issues without Internet access. This is especially beneficial when spending consecutive days at sea on a cruising holiday. The two downloaded issues that I tried to read opened without a problem.

That said, I've just tried to download an 2007 issue of BRM and whilst I can read it through my home Internet connection, I don't seem to be able to download it to read later. I keep getting the message "Permission Not Granted". This may be because my subscription is only a few minutes old so I'll give it time and try again.

It's rather sad that BRM do something to give people a new way to access it's materials and then, because some people perceive it to be in some way elitist,  those members who wish to take up the offer then have to ask Andy that their membership is hidden.

Make sure I have a corner room again, don't want to have to move to make way for the "footy"

Yes, the bloke who'd been on a session in the casino on the Friday night wasn't too impressed when people turned up at his room at lunchtime on Saturday for their prawn sandwiches. You've got to say the room's views were spectacularly good (as far as exhibitors' rooms go). Not having a gold badge meant I had a view of a carpark and gwrrob's house instead.

As a non footy fan my view was wasted ....

Whatever they say in their terms, they provide this icon:

exact_pdf.png.4b0eb18187f8417873d06ec685dec478.png

Which if clicked downloads a PDF file of a 2-page spread. It's a PDF file on your computer, so clearly you can keep it for ever.

Not very convenient if you want to keep a full copy of an issue, but most folks just want to keep a few specific articles.

cheers,

Martin.

Running short of storage space I took a year of old magazines off the shelf recently. I went through them and found an average of one article per issue that I wanted to keep for future reference so I don't think I would have a problem saving the pages I wanted.

the recent furore and outrage about vegan sausage rolls as an example

If you don't want a vegan sausage roll, don't buy one

Have you been looking at the Taunton RMWeb Members Day thread recently, then?

Funnily enough I did think about a bloke who carries a lump of iron ore round with one of his layouts when composing that. :p

I went to an exhibition in Stafford and an exhibitor asked if I would like to see his sack of real Welsh steam coal.

I have looked online at the BRM site and I can’t see how to cancel my quarterly print subscription. Is that possible to do when calling for Gold or do I need to make a separate call to someone else?

Tony

PS

It was Stafford, Texas not the other one.

Wander the streets of Stafford and it won't be long until a local offers to show you something you didn't want to see.

WRT the sensible question, the subs office can take care of that for you over the 'phone at the same time.

Move it to Bristol and you have a SW show for BRM

Well, there's an RMWeb Members Day at Taunton on 28th April next, where you can mingle with real Golden People and eat veggie pasties.

Goods to see plenty have signed up

One though that has occurred to me is whether you could offer access to the digital copies of Garden Railway or Narrow Gauge World magazine instead of BRM. RMWeb has sections for both those topics so they might be more relevant to some and attract addition people to sign up?

That's the closest ANTB will ever get to being an exhibition layout.:jester:
