RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 30, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 30, 2020 (edited) Good afternoon. It's nice and sunny and I've just been out for the 1 hr walk that we are allowed. However the tardis is still in May 2007 at Brighton with a few more from Volks electric railway to start. No 9 having just come through the carriage sheds. Then looking west along the line towards the pier. We now move to the Thames valley and Keith and I used out usual Cross country friends and family £10 ticket, courtesy of his daughter, to get to Reading and then knocked off the Thames Valley branches. Here we are at Bourne End reversing to get to Marlow. With the driver changing ends. After going to and from Marlow the guard worked the ground frame at Bourne End. Then along the main line to Twyford to wait for the shuttle to Henley. I hadn't realised the scenery was so good in the Thames valley. More tomorrow all being well. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted November 1, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 1, 2020 (edited) Good morning. No post yesterday due to gardening and leaves on the lawn (Weed patch). We now move on to early 2008 and a cold day at Doncaster when Wabtec's 08 was shunting what looked like a GNR coach. I have no info about the vehicle. Then 28th February Keith and I had a day out in south east London. Here a tram departs Beckenham Junction. We then headed up to Crystal Palace via Bromley. No AC electrics unfortunately though there are still signs of them around. We then headed east to Sittingbourne and I think this is Sheerness. 3 pages completed that day, 17, 18 and 22. Next back at Colton Junction and a Grand Central HST heading south. I rather liked this livery. All being well some more tomorrow, Edited August 7, 2022 by jamie92208
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted November 2, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 2, 2020 (edited) Good afternoon, it's raining so gardening has been abandoned. Instead we can go back to 2007. I must have mis labelled a film. The first two are from the same visit to Colton Junction as yesterday. First of all a GNER HST gets it time in the sunlight heading south. And not long after a 66 headed south with coal empties. Then we move on to where I think is Doncaster as we headed to London to knock off more branches, From Kings Cross we headed out to Watford Junction on the Electric Lines then out to St Albans Abbey. A pity it didn't still head on to Welwyn, it would have been a useful link. Back into Town then out to Caterham where a security guard tried to tell me that I couldn't take pictures. Up to Croydon and then out to Tattenham Corner. Three more branches knocked off. These were all on the 12th July 2007 according to the notes in my rail atlas. RMweb Premium iands Posted November 2, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 2, 2020 Hi Jamie, not sure about the 3rd photo in today's offering, doesn't look like Doncaster to me. Can't remember an OHL portal like that at Doncaster, or anywhere on ECML (but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong).
RMweb Premium Chris116 Posted November 2, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 2, 2020 Many years ago I was working at Southfields during the tennis championships and two BTP officers stopped three young Japanese ladies taking their photos of each other stood either side of the Underground roundel. I pointed out that they could take the photos and was told that passengers were not allowed to take photos on the Underground! I told the officers that it was only flash photos that were not allowed but they still insisted that passengers could not take photos so I asked the three ladies if they would like me to take their photos which they were very pleased with. The officers then took me to see the supervisor and reported my actions to which the supervisor said that I had been 100% correct and the BTP were totally wrong. We did not see those officers again and when some of their colleagues heard what had happened I got a box of biscuits as a thank you for correcting the wrong information. 3

RMweb Premium Davexoc Posted November 2, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 2, 2020 Jamie, The first of todays photos is technically an ex-GNER liveried set, the franchaise then being run by the shortlived National Express East Coast. They were soon to hand back the keys and it then became the government run East Coast outfit. Regards, Dave
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted November 4, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 4, 2020 (edited) Good morning from a slightly chilly Charente. To begin with we are still on Epsom Downs and attempting to find the station of that name. It turns out that this is the entrance a footpath down the side of the house in the picture. It took us about 5 minutes to find it. Eventually we found the single platform station behind the new housing estate. A far cry from the multi platform station that saw royal train workings on Derby day. Next a trip on the Wensleydale railway with my mate Keith and both our wives. The plan was to go to Hawes market via a vintage bus connection from Redmire. Our transport was a Mk 1 DMU which brought back many memories. At Redmire the bus turned up but it turned out to have started from Ripon and was full. Our only option was to head back to Leeming. Where my good lady was pleased to discover that they'd named a coach in her honour. More tomorrow all being well. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted November 5, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 5, 2020 (edited) Good morning. It's still sunny here but cool however time for some more photos. Today we are in Wales doing the Aberystwyth and Pwllheli branches on a Mid Wales Rover. The day got off to a good start as our train from Doncaster to Sheffield was sent down the ex GC goods lines from Mexborough Junction to Aldwarke. I apologise in advance for the rather poor quality of the photos but the whole film was affected. First of all a trip from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth. As we left we passed the VoR shed. Then the unmistakeable shape of Harlech Castle Where we waited for another 158 to pass us. I seem to remember a school party heading to Harlech to play a match against the school there. Then across the flat crossing at Porthmaddog, installed but not connected up. And finally into Pwllheli. More tomorrow I hope. caradoc
The odd passenger train is booked to use the GC Mexborough/Aldwarke Jc route, to maintain route knowledge for diversions in case of an incident; I made a point of travelling, a few years ago, on an XC service that way in order to 'do' the new connection at the Aldwarke end.
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted November 8, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 8, 2020 (edited) Good morning. A few more, mainly from the Welsh trip. One feature of the trip was the number of narrow gauge railways that we saw en route. he VoR at Aberystwyth then the Welsh Highland as we crossed the new flat crossing. On the return trip from Pwllheli there was the other Welsh Highland at Porthmadog/ Then the Fairbourne. Followed by the Tallylynn We then had to wait at Dovey Junction for a connection. What an incredible place that is with no housing and I don't thin any road access at all. Like Berney Arms but without the pub. Again apologies for the poor quality of that film, I'm not sure what happened to it. Finally a but nearer home and an very pleasant evening was spent on the Kirklees Light Railway with a joint, Huddersfield Railway Circle and Wakefield railway Modeller Society evening there. More in due course. Jamie Edited August 7, 2022 by jamie92208

RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted November 9, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 9, 2020 (edited) Good afternoon, just as I type and watch the sunset. More from 2008. First another shot from the trip to the Kirklees Light Railway. It looks very different from when I rode it in a DMU, just before it closed. Next a few taken for an article that I wrote in Midland Record about the unbuilt portions of the Midland's West Riding Lines. This one shows Bath Road in Heckmondwike. The Midland through line to Bradford and Scotland, under the 1897 proposals, would have run in a cutting along the right hand side. The gable end is what was the municipal power station, now a joiners and undertakers. No work got done except that a tunnel was built under the road so that coal could have been taken direct to the bunkers from the proposed goods yard. The LNWR Leeds New Line runs in a deep cutting on the other side of the power station and it cost a lot to have coal carted up from there. The next picture shows the road and pedestrian access to the LNWR's Cleckheaton Station on the New Line. The Midland's line would have run underneath the viaduct. The first part of the West Riding Lines from Royston to Dewsbury was built, along with a branch down into Saville Town Goods depot that survived till the 60's. Th embankment of the main line became siding for wagon storage and is now occupied by a new housing estate called "The Sidings". This view is taken from the end of the embankment looking across the valley along the line of the proposed route. The Midland's station would have been on a viaduct in the centre of the picture. In the far distance the line would have tunnelled through the ridge towards Heckmondwike and the Spen Valley under the school building that can be seen. Finally two photos taken at a Level Crossing between Church Fenton and Burton Salmon. First an Advenza Freight 47 heading south. And then a Freightliner 66 heads north. More tomorrow all being well. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted November 11, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 11, 2020 (edited) Still in ate April early May 2008. We went to a church conference in Blackpool and the reconstruction of the tramway was underway. Here a loop being relayed at, IIRC, Bispham. And one of the iconic Balloons heading for Cleveleys. The new trams hadn't appeared at this stage. Next we are on the 15th May on a day out in the Midlands here are the array of semaphores at Worcester Shrub Hill. Thanks to Western Aviator for sorting that out for me. Then on 15th May Keith and I had a day out in the Midlands on some sort of rover ticket. As well as lines in the Worcester area we went to Oxford and caught the shuttle to Bicester Town. This view looks a bit different today. Then a walk across town and I couldn't resist taking a photo of this delightfully named street. And on to Bicester North. A cracking day out, 4 pages completed, and as a bonus our Cross Country service home from Birmingham got diverted via Whitacre Junction to Kingsbury so some freight only trackage was marked off as well. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted November 14, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 14, 2020 (edited) Good afternoon from a sunny place. We start today with the last photo from the Midlands expedition on 15th May 2008. I think it's Bicester North with a fast train for Snow Hill went north. Then a day out to Tamworth to see Pendelinos and freight. Things had ground to a halt on the WCML due to a signalling problem on the then 2 track section. Rumours spread of a steamer stuck in the queue south of us. This then appeared. Taw Valley on a positioning move from Southall to Carnforth. I had visions of a conversation between the fireman and a modern young signaller with the fireman trying to explain the need to move or he would have to drop the fire. Anyway things did get moving again. Taw Valley then drew in and stopped. On the footplate was, IIRC, Chris Milner from the Railway Magazine. I was invited into the cab and made welcome. My last cabbing of a steamer on the main line was 92208 in 1966. Then an evening outing on the Middleton Railway for members of the Leeds and District Traction Engine Club. Another shot of the loco. Which then ran round. A good evening was had by all. Finally a shot of the new Leeds Shed, namely Midland Road, a very appropriate name. Then owned by LNWR I think. Hopefully some more to come but that's the last of my film and slide scans. Time to go digital at last. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted November 16, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 16, 2020 (edited) Good afternoon from a sunny place. Today is D for Digital day. My faithful OM-1 had served me well from 1977. I was constantly being told to go digital but until then had not been impressed by most of the digital cameras with their very long dwell time between pressing the shutter and taking the picture. Also decent quality DSLR's were out of my price range. However my last aunt died at the end of 2007 and her legacy allowed me to head off to a camera shop. I found a very knowledgeable assistant in Currys in Leeds and came home with a DSLR and two lenses. I've just manged to retrieve my 2008 to 2010 photos from the hard drive of a broken down desktop and am slowly trying to sort out my rather chaotic filing system. However I have managed to find some from December 2008 when I had a trip to Crewe. Here a Thunderbird is being coupled up to a Pendelino. Quite a complex coupling. However they did get it coupled. Then pulled away. And then we moved to the car park and spent some time watching the independent lines. Freightliner 66 came past. That's all that it will allow me to upload today so hopefully some more tomorrow. Jamie Edited August 7, 2022 by jamie92208
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted November 19, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted November 19, 2020 (edited) Good evening from the deepest Charente as the sun sets. Apologies for no posts over the last couple of days but other things got in the way. Anyway continue with the remaining pictures of freight on the independent lines at Crewe with a 67 emerging from the darkness. Then a 92 headed south. Followed by a DRS 66 heading north. I'd never knowingly photographed or even watched anything on the independent lines and Keith and I were quite happy with out time watching over the car park wall. Then we move north on a snowy February the 5th in 2009 and another trip to Glasgow to try and knock off various lines on the south side. We ventured out to East Kilbride on a 156. I did like that livery. Our 156 then took us back into the city. A few more trips on various parts of the Cathcart Circle helped us to finish off Page 81. A good day out.
