Small guillotine

Recommended Posts

Looking for a small guillotine, or similar, for cutting stripwood and plastic section to length. I can't seem to find anything using Google, but that's probably because I am using the wrong terminology. Can someone point me in the direction of one, with recommendations.

Thanks

Have you tried looking for a chopper (no sniggering at the back). North west shortline seem to do them and they are available from that supplier named after a South American river.

Don't think I want to pay nearly £180 though.

I found a Proops one for £10.50. Has anyone any experience of it?

No need to pay that much https://www.ema-models.co.uk/index.php/hand-tools/cutting-hand-tools/the-chopper-ii.html

Used one for years; recommended.

There's a similar-priced Proses cutter but with more plastic than good old-fashioned metal.

I've used one of these for chopping up a countless number of plywood timbers over the years.  It must be screwed down otherwise it distorts and won't cut properly.

https://sylcreate.com/product/multi-angle-guillotine/

£15 + p&p, but out of stock with the manufacturer at the moment though.

That's like the one I bought a while back on TheBay. It's still available (from the same supplier - much to my surprise) at

No connection, just a customer.

How easy is it to set to cut to length. It's not obvious in the listing.

That's the same one as sold by Proops - I have one but personally I'm not impressed; the material being cut has to be very lightweight or the thing distorts and you end up with a wonky cut.  Personally I'd go for the one AndyY recommends.

Had mine for years. I am sure that a friend paid around £40 this time last year for the upgraded model

Agreed, that's why I mentioned screwing it down to stop this happening.  As I said, fine for thin ply and only £15.

You pays yer money...

;)

Have you used it on plastic strip, is it ok?

It's not obvious to me either and I've got one of them! One day I'll find a 'tutorial' somewhere that explains all its features. In the meantime I set a 'stop' by taping a piece of veroboard (any piece of straight plain plastic would do) to the surface of the cutter in the appropriate place. Surely there's a 'proper' way to so it using the 2 quarter-circle adjustment 'guides', but I've not found it yet.

I'm a real fan of the £15 plastic one and use 8t for all my plasticard sections - up to about 80thou square its ok.

I think adding an end stop is essential, and that the anvil was starting to wear badly so i added a green cutting mat to take the wear.

First job I need to do is to cut around 100 pieces of 0.6x2mm walnut strip to 25mm long for decking a loading platform. Most of the jobs I plan to use it for, will need cutting consistently to length.

I've had a NWSL for years - and I'm still using the original razor blade!  I've got a pack of replacements just in case.  I've found that after time the threaded inserts for the brackets to hold the angled stops in place can work loose and I have now Araldited them back in place.  No idea what I paid for it but it won't have been anything like the price quoted above.

For clarity, the North west shortline  mk11 listed on Amazon isn’t £180, it’s £50. This appears to be the same unit as recommended by AY Mod.

And if you take out an Amazon Platinum Mastercard you get a tenner off, albeit as an Amazon gift card.  No need to use the Mastercard - just use the stunt to get a tenner off ;)

A bit more expensive, but looks like a useful alternative......

I had a look at one of these at an exhibition (remember them?) a while ago, and came to the opinion that it was too flimsy and flexible, some of the plastic parts should have been metal to impart some rigidity and accuracy to the machine.

IMHO, seemed like a great idea in theory but needed a coat of looking at from an engineering point of view.
