robmcg
With the introduction of the first Bachmann 9Fs in 2006 we now have quite a few variations of this lovely prototype available, even if often only obtainable second-hand. I think it is up there with the finest in 00 RTR modelling, and I might be wrong but I think in 2006 Nos 92116, 92192 and 92220 were produced in pristine condition and from 2007-on there was a weathered 92044, a weathered 92185 with DCC fitted, a pristine 92002 and 92006 and 92249 and a weathered special edition 92240 (Modelzone?), until we had a bewildering array of models covering most variations. These variations were complicated by changes in late BR tender-swaps, random front step rebuilds, double chimneys, and probably a few other things I've forgotten. BUT I was surprised to see that I have amassed a fair few of these models, since I genuinely enjoy good RTR for its own sake, and here is a list of those I have, listed numerically by engine number, given that Bachmann's numbering defies my comprehension. 92000 TMC weathered double chimney BR1G 92008 pristine re-numbered from 92006 BR1G 92044 factory weathered BR1F 92077 pristine BR1C 92116 pristine BR1C 92116 aftermarket weathered BR1C 92124 aftermarket weathered BR1C 92164 aftermarket weathered BR1C 92177 aftermarket weathered from 92077 BR1F 92185 factory weathered double chimney BR1F 92189 factory weathered double chimney BR1F 92198 aftermarket weathered renumbered from 92192 BR1F 92211 pristine BR1G 92220 Evening Star pristine or possibly mildly weathered must check, BR1G 92229 aftermarket weathered BRIG 92249 pristine BR1B? late BR. I think there might be one or two more lurking, I have photos of a weathered 92192, and I sold a 92233 and 92220, but the collection is rather large... and likely to grow when 92069 arrives. Anyway in appreciation here is a photo of one of them to get the ball rolling. and another, why not! Any pics and comments about the models by readers would be most welcome.... I couldn't find a thread dedicated to these superb models. Cheers Edited November 14, 2020 by robmcg correction
RMweb Gold TravisM Posted November 13, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 13, 2020 I just love a “spaceship” as they were commonly referred to and I think the Bachmann 9f is streets ahead of the Hornby model. I don’t have the space or finances to run them. Your a very lucky man to have such a great collection. 2
Chilly
I would love them to do BR 9F No. 92134........... Ah maybe one day Chilly

In 2001 Hornby produced a small run of 92134 in a weathered livery. The catalogue number was R2200A. It was tender drive but the later loco drive chassis is a straight swap.

RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted November 14, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 14, 2020 One from me as 92220 drifts through Brent with a short down freight to Plymouth in 1960. One of Bachmann's best ever models.
atom3624
Great shot. This 'recent interest' has prompted me to get my Bachy ES out - one I've kept 'pristine'. Fantastic looker and it's performance is brilliant - I think I added extra lead but haulage is excellent as is it's running - very smooth with quite a reasonable turn of speed if required - just as the 1:1 example! Chilly
Oh why oh why did I look at this topic Until 92134 becomes available Just had to order Evening Star from Locomotion Models as it had a loan spell at NYMR from 1986 onwards which I hadn't appreciated
truffy
My only criticism of Blue's 92220, which is my favourite locomotive by the way, is the lack of painted cab detail. Other than that, it's nigh on flawless. 1
atom3624
It's a superb model. Nice choice. I was a little confused with the last post, but it appears I painted in my gauges - before adding the crew. Al. Chilly
Does the Locomotion Model come with etched plates? Chilly
atom3624
Good question. Mine is a 'standard' Bachmann ES - came with etched plates. Not clear on Locomotion Models' site. I would have thought a 'more special' edition would as well, but better to verify. Al.

atom3624
One thing worthy of mention is this is one of Bachmann's steamies with 'working valve gear' - the pivot being above the valve and the rod moving in the valve - something Hornby don't seem to do. Strange, correct me if I'm mistaken, but MANY years ago, H-D / Wrenn locomotives always did this. Al.

robmcg
One thing about the Spaceships is that these models look good pristine or weathered, this of early production 2006? 32-851 No.92192 .. just an advertising style studio photo, or with my background 32-858DC No.92185 and factory weathering. I checked my 92220 and it is indeed pristine, I must have sold my lightly-weathered version, and I am working on another portrait of it to go with several already done. In the meantime here it is rather clean emerging from a sort of Devonshire tunnel on the 1-in-50 out of Bath heading south. As some may know my modelling abilities are somewhat compromised by injury and I enjoy enhancing my basic pics of models with PSP6 photo editing software, though some would not call it 'true' photography, because it isn't. . Even yer basic portrait of one of the last to be withdrawn 92249 with a BR1C tender... as I think correctly modeled by Bachmann with the big front step. Does anyone recall the release of one of the 9Fs with the incorrect tender type, or was that a Standard 5MT furore? I have seen a few 9Fs for sale with so-called incorrect tenders, usually a LMR BR1C instead of ER BR1F or vice versa... BR1G seems a bit more obvious but swaps did happen, I presume? Is the above on 92249 a BR1B as fitted to Crostis and thus moved on to any engines near the very end of BR steam? All great stuff. It is indeed no match for the Bachmann version, so long as the Bachmann model has an intact front pony assembly... I'm still smarting from my embarrassing sale of 92233 with poorly repaired damage, thanks again for your forbearance and kindness! 1
G-BOAF
My one criticism of this model is the lack of wheel bearings - already somewhere there is a report of the axle slots wearing through on heavily used models. I would also say that tender pickups would be an improvement; Hornby was doing both at the time the 9F was tooled However in every other respect the model is fantastic, and really one of the best, with real presence.
robmcg
A couple more pictures to be going on with... 92233 as sold by Hattons, or 92185 weathered and pictured in a shed scene... I like these models so much I bought another this morning. I mean, how else can you start the day?

I think to achieve that level of wear, you'd have to run one for weeks on end. I don't read reports of hesitation on pointwork, either. Given the clearances and the compromises of 00 gauge I think the chassis is an astonishingly fine piece of work.
Ribird
Just got my first 9F, all I can say is wow! And of course I went for the Locomotion one! I’ll be making it shiner for now, but might bring some parts back down with some matte (like the smokebox area)
