MichaelW
Ah, now I see why you're not starting a new layout this winter I'm sure moving the crossover will just tempt me into even more indiscretions when it comes to shunting the hoppers... RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted November 2, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 2, 2013 Things came to a fairly abrupt halt after the last post, I'd ordered some chairs from C&L and they came on Wednesday and the plan was to stick the templates down on Thursday night and cut sleepers ready so I could start building points today, problem, only 2 lengths of sleeper ply... so, ordered some more on Thursday night and they arrived today so back to it... Service from C&L these days is superb!
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted November 2, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 2, 2013 Track laying in full swing. Point timbers glued down, the painted ones are recovered from the old points and have the rivets for the blades to pivot from, new rivets cost money you know Two new sections of plain track laid. RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted November 3, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 3, 2013 A slight problem to sort tonight, drilled the holes for the point mechanisms, first one went fine, second went straight into the baseboard cross member. RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted November 16, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted November 16, 2013 Finally got back to point laying tonight, I made the crossing Vs on Wednesday night at the club and after I had finished them Dave.C told me about a quicker way to make them as used by Baron Harrap, 'Easy Frogs'. The Vs have been fitted.

RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted January 5, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 5, 2014 Well, after a bit of playing at building locos... ...track laying has resumed. A section of the baseboard crossmember that was in the way for fitting the point motor has been removed. More ballast has been laid on the points secured with 'International Paints Laminate Floor Reviver & Restorer'. The points still need check rails and slide chairs fitting. The two sections of plain track have been sprayed with Railmatch 'Frame Dirt'.

RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted January 6, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 6, 2014 I've found just about enough room underneath to fit the point motors in, in the first photo can be seen where the cross member was cut away. Plenty of room to fit it all in here. This one near the end of the board could be tight. Yep, a bit tight! I had to trim a bit off both of these motors to fit them in. RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted January 12, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 12, 2014 I've spent the last few days rationalising the track feed wiring, as the layout is now run with DCC only two wires between boards is needed, These haven't been replaced but 3 linked together to give better electrical capacity. A pair of wires (from a 1.5mm cable) has been run across each board and the track droppers attached to these. The bundles of red wires are for the signals and I haven't tidied these as many of them will need to be moved with the resignalling following the moving of the crossover, The pair of wires have taken a trip round the baseboard to pass all the track feeds. One of the SwitchPilots on this board will be moved to board 4 as there will only be 3 signals on here instead of 6 previously. Method of attaching track feeds - using the earth wire from the cable. The wires on the left are spares.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted January 19, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 19, 2014 Signals have now been refitted in their new positions and are working as far as the SwitchPilots, they now need rewiring back to the control panel as most are now on different boards. I have replaced the control box, the original one was a bit rough and temporary (it did last 5 years though), I have done away with the section switches and DIN sockets and fitted the Powercab panel. Repositioned signals, the original position of the starter on the platform can be seen as a white rectangle. The finished crossover.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted February 2, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 2, 2014 Since finishing work on the front of the layout I've been busy turning it into a full circuit, this will make operating much easier and longer trains can be run, especially the ironstone train, which has been restricted to 8 hoppers when they usually ran with up to 25 + van, I won't be running that many but I am aiming for 16. The three main fiddleyard boards along the back are 4' long by 14" wide, there is space to fit 6 tracks in comfortably but for now 4 will be enough. There are 3 curved boards on each end connecting the FY to the main layout, the centre line of these is 3'6" radius. I've put the whole layout up tonight to cut the boards that connect to the main boards as these meet at odd angles, there was a bit of trial and error and shuffling about of boards to get them in the right position but in the end I managed to get them right and the ends are cut ready to finish building these boards next. They were fairly close to start with, this wasn't just luck, about 2 months ago I laid the scenic boards on the floor and set too with straight edges, string and chalk and drew it all out on the floor, in fact there are still traces of chalk there tonight.
