Andrew P
Hi Paul, great to meet you and the BCB Team today, bet it all went to CO** when I left, hahhahha. All the best and hope to meet up again soon.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted August 26, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 26, 2014 And this is how it will, hopefully, fit on the layout. The former fiddleyard. IMGP9168-001.JPG IMGP9169-001.JPG Bridge and cutting mock up from card. IMGP9172-001.JPG Way back in March plans were a-foot to develop the waste ground at the Whitby end of the layout, well work started over the weekend and first the old backscene was removed and new hardboard cut and painted. Work then moved on to the back side of the existing bridge, this was originally left bare as it would never be seen, this has been cut from Wills stone and an arch cut from thick plastic. The ground is being built up using extruded polystyrene, it's not quite as messy as expanded... With the mock up bridge in position. The first side nearing completion. RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted August 26, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 26, 2014 Picked up a packet of Wills stone today so I have been able to cut the wing walls, these need thickening to fit the coping stones. I've also started to build the occupation bridge, it's a bit wider and lower than the mock up and looks better for it.
DougN
Paul, Looking nice there. What is the stone sheet you are using on the next bridge? is it one of the slaters dressed stone?
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted August 27, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 27, 2014 Hi Doug, yes, it's the larger Slaters dressed stone.
Guest 2750
The extension is looking really nice Paul. When is the layout next out with the extension?

RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted August 28, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 28, 2014 Made a bit of progress on the bridge last night, fitted the stone on the unseen side to make sure all goes well. It did!
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted August 28, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 28, 2014 The other side of the cutting has been tackled tonight, quite pleased with how the shape has turned out. There's still a bit more to add on to bring the ground level up to the existing. The view looking down from the front. This is something like the normal viewing angle. I have decided to build a low retaining wall on the inside of the curve, the inspiration for this comes from photos of the cutting outside Grinkle tunnel where there was a landslip while they were building the line and the wall was built. RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted August 31, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 31, 2014 The land has now been fully built up and carved to shape, a bread knife is great at this but it does leave a mess, possibly more mess than using expanded polystyrene. The bridge has had the rest of it's stone added and had the first coat of paint.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted September 1, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 1, 2014 The bridge is now complete and fitted. And I've started papering over the cracks!
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted September 2, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 2, 2014 Got the papering done and the whole lot covered with a layer of filler. Just as I got finished the pick-up goods returned from Whitby. And a few minites later a passenger train heading the other way... Had to put something in the pictures, photos of filler are a bit boring and it doesn't show up very well...

RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted September 2, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 2, 2014 Never had any problems, just a couple of coats of brown emulsion, the first one a thin primer.
RMweb Gold Enterprisingwestern Posted September 3, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 3, 2014 I bought a bag ( a large one!) of artex about 16 years ago, if not more and I still use it now so it must be good for summat...jsut not walls and ceilings in houses Careful Mickey, at that age it might still have asbestos in it. DougN
I will say that asbestos is the nasty that just keeps giving....I deal with the demolition and safe removal of it.... I had never thought of it in a plaster/ paint product... Australia outlawed it in 1984.... I think we will be removing it for over a hundred years! RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted September 6, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2014 The Midland distraction is now just about over and ground works have continued, some good topsoil has been imported and this morning ballast has been laid. Those with keen eyes will have noticed the distinct lack of a retaining wall, the more I looked at it the less it fitted in, the off set of the occupation bridge is to the other side of the line so the wall would have looked odd set back on this side and I didn't want to build up the ground on this side to move the wall nearer the track as this could have made the track a bit squeezed in. Anyway, I'm very pleased with the way it looks now. Next job is the fun bit - grass!
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted September 7, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 7, 2014 The grass is greener a mucky brown colour on the other side... The ballast is now dry and track painted and I've made a start on the grass, looks a right mess at the moment but trust me, it will improve hopefully... This is all I can do at the moment as I've run out of prepared 'grass' and I need to bleach a batch, as it came it's quite dark brown.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted September 8, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 8, 2014 I've bleached a batch of grass tonight and it's now on the clothes airer in the conservatory awaiting a bit of sun and warmth in the morning to dry it out! In the meantime I've started to tidy up what I glued down last night, first I make it look worse by fluffing it up with a wire pet brush. It is then trimmed with the electric trimmers. I will repeat the process after the rest has been fixed down and had it's first trim. It is starting to look a bit more like grass, even if it's a bit brown. RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted September 8, 2014 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 8, 2014 Who says I know what I'm doing It's a technique I learnt many years ago trimming pedigree Suffolk sheep for showing, using hand shears rather than the clippers, fluffing the wool up then trimming it repeatedly.
