Exactly the sort of protective goggles, ear defenders and highly visible tough protective overalls (with no loose or baggy bits to get caught in machinery) that I expected to see. Popular Post LNER4479
OK - last update prior to Donny. Yet more sniggering signalling ... possibly the last? I already had these in stock. Thought they were 'ordinary' disc ground signals but turns out they're the LNER 1930s variant, which is of course perfect for Grantham. Impossible to tell whether any of this type were actually installed pre-war (to replace the older GNR rotating head type) but - hey - they'll make a nice contrast if nothing else. As you might expect, some of these parts are quite small n fiddly. Apparently (according to the destructions), it's a 'challenge' to make the balance levers go up and down as well. Well - 'challenge' accepted! Hence the introduction of some strengthening pieces on the balance weight arms and the backbinders. And here's how they go together. Note the offset pivot point (unlike the standard BR type) which means that the disc falls slightly as it is pulled 'off'. As assembled, these are about the height of a thumbnail. Of course, this means I have to break into the main control panel wiring, in preparation for the voltmeister. Sassunfassunrassunrat (<-- sound of Muttley muttering) Do you like me spot lamp? And here they are waiting to go in, balance weights working and the little backbinder arrangement is quite cute as well. But where are they going exactly? You'll just have to come to the show and find out ... 19 13

gr.king
Indeed, plenty of scope for viewers, well intentioned or otherwise, to distract the fiddle yard operators from their tasks. Polite participation in conversation, possibly with friends not seen for some time, as well as the evident additional need to keep an eye on stock security, ought to to be quite enough to increase the likelihood that punctual and correct preparation, dispatch and receipt of trains gets disrupted, and that friction develops when those at the front want a flawless performance...
Popular Post Ollie K
Another happy few hours whiled away watching Grantham do its thing yesterday. Pleased I spotted two out of the three main updates… As a bonus, a front-row seat to watch the layout in its latest state being immortalised through the Wright lens. Really looking forward to seeing the results in print. Thanks to Graham and Ian for the brief chats, hopefully not too distracting from the job in hand.

Martin S-C
I finally got to see the layout in the flesh and very spectacular it is too. Had a brief chat with Graham during set-up on Friday afternoon and was able to push through the crowds once or twice to watch operations (as well as witness a green traders lorry wrap itself around a tree). Most layouts only have spectacular derailments but Grantham has road traffic accidents as well. 4
