RMweb Gold gwrrob Posted June 12, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 12, 2020 Recently a few on here recommended the products of War World Scenics. This month's BRM features in both the mag and on video, the new Pro Grass Precision Detailer for static grass application. This looks quite promising for someone who doesn't have swathes of scenery to cover and likes the idea of covering small areas such as my cuttings and embankment in small instalments. https://www.wwscenics.com/product/war-world-scenics-pro-grass-precision-applicator/

RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted June 13, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 13, 2020 Morning all. I have no hesitation in recommending WWS products. I use a Pro Grass applicator which deals with 1mm to 6mm fibres. Grass wise, WWS own brand or PECO (Which I believe are supplied by WWS) are in my opinion, the best. I've used Woodland scenic grass and I find them not as good and more likely not to stand up. I use their layering spray to build up the layers ( strange but true). One thing to remember is a light spray of matt varnish when it's all finished. It cuts down on the shine from the fibres. Rob. 2

Interesting to see the layering spray available in aerosol and bottle, which I assume has a mist head attached. Which did you use Rob ? I'm impressed with the range of different colours, bewildering for a novice but just the choice a discerning modeller who remembers coloured sawdust for scenics not that long ago. 2

Can't be a bad product if Peco have rebranded it for their lines and the layering spray works well ( better than hairspray IMHO ). I noticed the newer smaller applicator last week and i am tempted. I haven't made any specific comparisons Rob, I have used both but never considered what differences there may be, that said I have used Tacky PVA for most of my work / trial pieces and I've just gone with it time wise to be honest, no sense in rushing it I think. I'm impressed with the range of different colours, bewildering for a novice but just the choice a discerning modeller who remembers coloured sawdust for scenics not that long ago. The base layer of 2mm grass goes down on a layer of normal PVA. I use Evo Stick wood glue. A few blobs then spread about with an old credit card or similar. A bit of contrast can be given if you put some fine scatter down first then the 2mm static grass over the top. The aerosol is my weapon of choice and, yes, it's quite a fine spray. Remember to invert the can when you finish and clear the nozzle. I also use a decent hairspray to secure flocks or leafy stuff. Colourwise, the more brown shades are my favourite. I find the spring and summer too vibrant for me. Winter grass works for me. Generally 4mm but also a bit of 6mm and 2mm get thrown in. No harm in mixing the colours either mind you so don't totally discount the greener shades. It's just a bit much for me as a whole if that makes sense. Everything has been thrown at Sheep Dip. I've used more 6mm on this layout than the others for a proper over grown effect ( I hope) And don't be too concerned about making a mistake. The brambly thing came about by accidently tipping a load of fine green scatter onto some 6mm grass. Looked alright so another squirt of layering spray followed by more scatter and more fixing spray and a sprinkle or two of white fine scatter to suggest flowers.......... Rob. I believe that the likes of Gordon Gravett still uses PVA. 4

Interesting. Yes, that's unmistakably a Chris Nevard layout and very nice it looks too, although I've lost track now of the layouts he's built! By sheer chance, a Kernow Towers 16XX (in OO) is currently in the early stages of construction here, at Kernow Towers, whilst a P4 16XX, belonging to Re6/6, is currently sitting on the Kernow Towers rolling road. 7
