Good evening, David. I like the latest Newcastle photo’s which are all of interest. In J8798, that’s a delightful three quarter view of 37065 on an up permanent way train, with a Shark leading, in April, 1987.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

The red van in this photo jumped out as in 1989 contractors vehicles within renewals or works sites were quite rare! I wonder if it was a specialist contractor with the Forth Banks arches nearby or something similar?

1989 was the relaying prior to resignalling and electrification of the ECML.

Is that around the time the new island platform, Platforms 5-8, was being built?

The photo was taken while the new island platform was being built, it involved quite a lot of other structural work so there were a number of contractors on site.

Good evening, David. I like the Winning photo’s which are all full of interest. In C14065, 56118 makes a great sight powering a coal train  to Blyth Power station, on the 23rd February, 1990. Somehow, 56’s and HAA’s always made a good combination.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Yes it could well be! I can’t remember the name of many of the hire companies but we certainly used Wentworths in Melland st Darlington for short term hire when vans were in dock!

Not the best colour for any vehicle next to the railway though!

Noble van hire rings a bell thinking back but it may have been later!

As an aside -we had a guy from Thornaby move over to the S&T at Darlington around 89/90 called Dave Greenwell. Not sure what role he was employed in at Thornaby though unfortunately.

Those MR loco photos illustrate well the difficulty of deciding on colours for models. "We have a good range. Which one would you like, sir?"

So much depends on the light, the sun direction and the film. Just compare the first two, taken the same day.

But lovely photos.

Good evening, David. I like the Midland Railway photo’s from Butterley. All are interesting, and in J6075, with Midland Railway ‘Spinner’ number 673, in May, 1978, you have such a lovely view.
The Newcastle Central photo’s are fascinating, and what a delightful scene in C11953, with a class 101 unit on a Newcastle to Sunderland service, on the 1st June, 1989. It would not be too long before the trackwork and signalling changed completely with the electrification of the ECML.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.

Not a name I was familiar with. I knew quite a lot of the fitting staff as well as traincrew

Good evening, David. I like the Damdykes photo’s all of which are of interest. The last photo’ is a splendid view of that class 142 ‘Skipper’ in a snow shower on a Newcastle to Morpeth service on the 18th April, 1995.

With warmest regards,

 Rob.
