  1. Past hour
  2. Hi Mikkel, Great images. The 3 plank behind the Dean Goods look odd to me. It looks like it’s got drop sides (no corner plates) and it has very substantial door bangers on the solebar - something that is absent from the ‘normal’ square or round ended wagon. I wish the number of the round ended wagon in the same image was clear enough to read! Duncan
  3. Not sure if I've posted here before, with this idea or otherwise, but there's one notion I've had on my mind for years. Picture this; it's 1939, and the storm of war is looming over Europe, about to fall at any moment; meantime, the North British Locomotive Company of Glasgow is in the process of completing an order for 30 semi-streamlined 4-8-2 mixed traffic locomotives for the New Zealand Railways Department- these being the NZR 'J-class (1939)'. A few draftsmen at the office, partly as a thought exercise, partly as a bet, and partly as their contribution to the war to come, decide to copy and rescale the J-class' plans from 3'6" gauge to 4'8.5" gauge; they strip away the unneccessary headlight, streamlining and cowcatchers, along with various other NZ specific parts, and add British standard couplers, buffers and lamp irons, in an attempt to create a simple, no frills, light and powerful mixed traffic engine for the war effort.
  4. Two 3-plankers here, square bloke underway and rounded type having a breather. Numbers not legible, and no date or location. Dean Goods carries 1903-18 J headcode and, I think, a garter. And here is 3- planker No. 36365 employed as runner. Caption says Crocodile Es No. 41948 and 41949 being moved from Horsehay to Hansbridge, 1909. (Images are larger if right-clicked and opened in new tab or downloaded)
  5. The other options would include standard metro signalling systems such as Siemens Trainguard or the CBTC systems produced by Alstom/Bombardier and Hitachi/Thalys. Metro systems are excluded from the interoperability directive, so there is no standard metro CBTC system. I suspect that the Wuppertal system is an ETCS level 2 system as it is unlikely that they need moving block. So likely both cost-effective and future proof.
  6. Today
  7. The photos of Hardwicke and Evening Star remind me that I was at Horsforth that day. Unfortunately from my vantage point the attempted photo was completely ruined by the dmu going in the opposite direction. I suspect that you have photographed the offending beast.
  8. That green stuff is nothing like what we have.. Where are the nettles, brambles, Alexander, thistles, and sycamore seedlings?
  9. A little more progress with the Class 116. The power cars needed some filler at the end of the brass overlays: When I started the project I had envisaged the set for the early/mid-1970s with the route indicator still in use. However I found some "GG" (Greater Glasgow) logos and I thought they might be great on the 116 instead. They were on a PC Models Pressfix sheet that was about 35 years old, so before I committed an wanted to make sure they were of use. Some decalfix helped. Success, so they were now to modelled on the late 1970s, when some vehicles had the route indicator plated over (as an example https://www.flickr.com/photos/134227013@N08/51715019843/). A piece of paper glued on was suffice for that. Here is one of the power cars with just the yellow end to paint: The centre car progressed faster, as less painting steps were needed. I decided not to do a lot of detailing: door handles, commode handles, door hinges, end handrails etc. are clearly missing in these images, but for my eyesight during normal running I don't notice their omission. Maybe someday... Windows were from a Peco Bullhead point packaging. I fitted NEM sockets and Kadee No.18 couplings, not prototypical but far better than the tension locks. It retains the tiny Lima buffers for now until I source some larger ones

  11. If you want specific advice on which stock is appropriate, you might want to start a thread in the other forum: https://www.rmweb.co.uk/forums/forum/25-modelling-questions-help-and-tips/
  12. A few comments for Coombe Barton on L'Arlesienne Bizet's music was written to go with a play. Did they really have that size of orchestra for plays? It was also a opera, but not by Bizet. Can you name an opera in which the title character does not appear? On Mr Yankovic, he seems to do parodies of songs that I don't know. Today we went to a choir's used book sale. I came back with a couple of railway picture books and a book on Waterloo County history that mentions some of SWMBO's ancestors. She picked up another copy of Kenneth Clark's Civilisation and another book by him. Also a couple of CDs -- one a 5 CD set of Romanian folk music. Tomorrow we go to Romeo and Juliet -- which I said I would not do until they got a better ending.
  13. Chocolate chip cake baked, delivered to the lucky recipient and consumed. For "services above and beyond that expected of a guard dog" Lucy and Schotty were both awarded roast chicken. Bbishop's Imbiss has been completed with only the roof to affix and it's travelling case to complete. I've developed hay fever and am sneezing like crazy - so can't sleep 😠. Goodnight!
  14. 90041 was the first in the original FL green/yellow, painted Oct 2003, 90046 followed in June 2005. For the Powerhaul version, 90045 was first in July 2010 with 90049 a month later. Later repaints were 90042 in March 2014 and 90043 in Nov 2015.
  15. I've frowned over doing Watchet so many times. I've got a digital Minehead branch project I've been working on for ages, but Watchet just plain frightens me off every time I look at it.
  16. Track is all SMP with hand-built points.
  17. Thanks Paul - but they're all bullhead actually!
  18. Yes, I reckon you're right & the end is black. If you zoom in to the bottom left corner there's an obvious demarcation line between brown bodyside & black underframe, but this doesn't turn the corner. Also there appears to be some smudging of the black around the first plank: — How about Return to Evesham? Quite a fructatious area. Pete S.
  19. My wife and I were all set to have a weekend in Sydney for this show then discovered it was the same dates as Brisbane. Not sure how that happened. Mike Wiltshire
  20. The print edition in a bag in the shops includes copies of Garden Rail and Narrow Gauge World.
  21. Mushy peas. Same look, much better flavour.
