sigtech
XH558 flew over my house today, just south of Kings Lynn at 15.07 and at about 200' heading N/West after flying over RAF Marham. Very impressive sight - and it reminded me of the time when I was in the RAF (radar). I watched from the rooftop as one overflew RAF Madeleina in Malta (this aircraft was at eye level climbing up from sea level whilst acting as a low - level target during an Air Defence exercise ) I had just been relieved from my radar watch below, and the aircraft had not been detected - it had successfully flown under the radar... Regards SIGTECH (Steve).
PrestburyJack
Saw her fly over Wellesbourne Airfield (Stratford upon Avon) today - made 2 passes, awesome. Looking forward to seeing her display at RIAT in July.
RMweb Gold mcowgill Posted June 28, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 28, 2015 Just got back from a weekend in York moving No 1 son out of his digs for the summer. Managed to get out to Elvington to see the flypast early on Saturday afternoon. Brings back memories of staying with family at RAF Scampton in the 70s when the place was full of them. ajaxjones
Managed to just about see it at Southend where it did a few fly pasts, very graceful and gave the impression of a giant stingray cruising around.
bigd
I managed to see it at Cosford on Saturday. I am glad I made the effort to see this. I had tried to see it at Southport air show last year. It was a no show,, grounded by cloud. My dad reminds me, that he took me to see the V bombers at RAF Finningley in the 1960s, I would be about 5 years old, and was terrified by them! jcm@gwr
I remember when was walking home from school (primary) through the park, must've been mid - late 60's (I moved up to secondary school, and we moved house, in the summer of '69, when I was 11) I heard this amazing roaring, thundering sound, I rushed out from the trees and going overhead was a Vulcan! Even better though, it was being escorted by 6, (yes, 6) EE Lightnings, that was a sight, and sound, I will never forget, as long as I live! FWIW, this was over Potters Bar, probably during the spring or summer.
Nimbus
I had just been relieved from my radar watch below, and the aircraft had not been detected - it had successfully flown under the radar... This was an embarrassing (to the opposition) Vulcan speciality when engaged in large-scale 'Red Flag' exercises in the USA. Avro had managed to incorporate 'stealth' design principles decades before the term was coined. They were also effective at high altitude, as the 1960 'Sky Shield' exercise demonstrated. 7 out of 8 aircraft on that occasion reached their targets deep inside the USA. The Nim. rob D2
Never really ' got ' the Vulcan. The plane we all wanted to see as kids was the Lightning ! If it's not fast and pointy it's not too exciting
geoffers
Nice view of it from the house as it did a fly-past over Norwich Airport. Mrs geoffers took a couple of piccies. Saw my first one when I was working at Coninsby in 1981 when one flew over. Impressed - yeah!!!! in April (?) 2013 she did a display over Wattisham. Woke me up as I was kipping in the mess between night shifts. Then yesterday probably my last view of her as an airborne warrior. BBC Look East did a bit on it after the BBC National News yesterday evening. Talked about the Vulcan but showed us the B17 at Duxford instead - oh dear!!!! RANGERS
Made the short trip to see her pass over the Welland Valley today and then over to Oundle to see her on the way back. It really is an awe inspiring sight, the car park came to a standstill as she flew directly overhead even though very few, if any were expecting the sight above. Nimbus
Today's booking by the Shuttleworth Collection provoked a deal of ranting on an aviation enthusiast site, where members were aggrieved that XH558 is such a draw among the wrong sort of people, that the show tickets had sold out days ago. They were thereby denied the opportunity of attending, to enjoy the luxury of a half-full airfield, as they had at last year's event. The Nim. [And someone should surely have booked it to overfly Silverstone today, and open its taps for the start!]
RMweb Premium Flying Pig Posted July 5, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted July 5, 2015 Today's booking by the Shuttleworth Collection provoked a deal of ranting on an aviation enthusiast site, where members were aggrieved that XH558 is such a draw among the wrong sort of people, that the show tickets had sold out days ago. They were thereby denied the opportunity of attending, to enjoy the luxury of a half-full airfield, as they had at last year's event. Totally disgraceful IMO. The airfield was infested with normals enjoying the flying and there wasn't, as far as I could see, a single obnoxious oaf in a citadel built from stepladder and golf umbrellas blocking everyone else's view and waving his mine-is-considerably-bigger-than-yours lenses about. And they call it an air display. (Actually it was a bl***y good one, most people stayed right to the end and the Vulcan's set - which started the show - was epic.) sandwich station
I've seen the Vulcan many times at air displays through the 80's and early 90's. I remember going to West Malling nr Maidstone Kent, it was an old WW11 fighter station (not there any more) about 1984, my friends wife was heavily pregnant at the time (7-8months). The Vulcan did a run through on feathered throttles and just flew out into the distance, banked round and started a second run in at about 150', as it got in front of us, the pilot picked the nose up and opened the engines right up, so she was climbing almost vertical. The noise was incredible, the ground was shacking and one unborn baby decided to kick the ---- out of it's mother. One year, I also remember it doing a fly past with all the Red Arrows in formation. The first time the Red Arrows had done this type of thing with another plane. I have pictures of it somewhere. If and when I find them, I'll post 1 or 2. Edit, changed the word group for ground. Agree, was a really good day out, only 5 miles away from home and we went as guests of the Airfield Fire service who were superb.
brian daniels
Had a nice day out at the RNAS Yeovilton Airday to see the Vulcan for probably my last time. It was good that it was already there so it took off and did a display with a Sea Vixen and two Vampires and then went off to Wales for a couple of displays before returning and landing to go on display right infront of us! Taking off. Up she goes. Display with Sea Vixen and Vampires. On it's own. Landing with parachute. Nice spot to park it!

Gareth Collier
The Vulcan visited Eastbourne Airbourne this weekend. I didn't manage to film it myself but here's a Youtube link. Not quite sure how close the crowd were to the edge of Beachy Head but you get a good view. Don't forget to crank the sound up! Gareth
