mikemeg
Hessle Haven In reply to the previous question, I am still working on it. I have to confess that I did stop work on the layout when I began doing test builds of etched locomotive kits around 2015 but the layout is still the 'test bed' for the locos and I still photograph them on it. The third section, which is by far the most complex part of the model, and is the section shown in some of my earlier photos of the 'real thing' in an earlier post - Reflections on the thread - is now work in progress but with twelve turnouts, two diamond crossings and a single slip - not to mention a row of railway cottages, another bridge, a gas works and a small shipyard and the muddy water of the haven itself - it is still 'some way off completion'. While the majority of the layout is based on actual track plans of Hessle Haven, I am going to have to add a motive power depot to house the forty (and growing) locos so far built or converted. Dairycoates is out of the question so, ideally, I need an ex North Eastern straight shed to model though Selby's square 'roundhouses' are tempting. So thanks for the question and, though this is not a model making thread, here's a couple of photos of a few of the tank locos on the railway, one of the models on test and, of course, that bridge. As it is a model of a part of the railway of East Yorkshire perhaps I'll get away with this on Rob's thread!! Popular Post mikemeg
The First Green Locomotive Following on from the posting of the 'First Steam Shed Sunday' but actually on the same day, a Sunday in early October of 1958, after we had left Dairycoates shed and were on our way home, the gates of the level crossing on Hessle Road, in Hull, closed. We hauled our bikes up the steps of the footbridge which adjoined the crossing to watch whatever had caused the gates to close. Down the incline from 'tin pan alley' the nickname of the main line girder bridge which passed Dairycoates shed, came a passenger train hauled by a lined green locomotive. As it approached the footbridge, we could see the number 45562 and then see that it carried a nameplate 'Alberta'. So this was the first of many encounters with Leeds Holbeck (55A) Jubilees; this one bringing in a Liverpool to Hull Sunday train. Later 45562 became one of the last Jubilees to remain in service but succumbed to the cutters torch in the late 1960's. So imagine my amazement when, on August 13th, 2020, going to Scarborough Station to photograph the Scarborough Spa Express, I saw a pristine, gleaming 45562 'Alberta'. Of course, this was one of the preserved Jubilees (Galatea?), temporarily carrying the number and name 45562 'Alberta' but what a coincidence. When we originally saw these locos, they were almost always filthy and increasingly looking very down at heel. This one looked as if it had come ex-works that same day, so immaculately was it turned out. The loco left Scarborough at its appointed 5.00pm and took out fourteen BR Mk 1 and Mk 2 coaches unaided, and without a vestige of a slip. A lady, standing next to me overlooking the station platform, who I had never seen before, turned and simply said 'Oh that is just beautiful'. And so it was!! The first two photos are of 45562 in Scarborough. The last photo shows the view from that Hessle Road footbridge, this as an unnamed Patriot - 45517 - approaches the level crossing on a football supporters special. I don't have a date for this photo but probably late 1950's; the tender totem is the later BR one but the coaches appear to be ex-LMS. RMweb Gold Popular Post Market65 Posted March 24 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 24 Good evening, everyone. Firstly, thank you, Mike, for those excellent, atmospheric and enjoyable posts about signalling, your lovely layout, and the first green locomotive. You are quite right, that unnamed Patriot is hauling a mixture of ex-LMS Pll and Plll carriages. Now, this evening, from myself here are four more photo’s which are courtesy of West Halton Sidings, Andy Mason, knoxrj, and mikeyashworth, all on Flickr. The first one is quite different, and is an advertisement for Sentinel shunters: Stick to steam and save money : advert issued by Sentinel Waggon Works, 1929 - Derwent Valley Light Railway, York (Layerthorpe) station. Next we have a photo’ of class J75, 2524, at Hull Springhead, in the 1930’s. Apologies about the ‘lean’, I can only think that the photographer didn’t quite have things setup properly. The third photo’ shows Deltic, 55011, as it departs Platform 2 at Scarborough with the Saturday service to Kings Cross. No date given, but it may be 1980. Finally, this is a photo’ of the time of the first Covid lockdown, and shows one of the results of it. “An unusual working, normally the weedkiller round East Yorkshire is an MPV on its own. However on Sunday 3rd May, 2020, it was top and tailed by 66137 and 66199 - this is to allow the operator of the weedkilling equipment to sit separately from the driver and maintain social distancing.” Best regards, Rob.
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted March 25 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 25 Good evening, everyone. This evening, we have four photo’s to enjoy, thanks to Mike Hutton, John Turner, Peter Brumby, Grahama5531, and Andy Mason, all on Flickr. The first one is a view of class B16/1, 61429, on what appears to be carriage stock being backed into a carriage siding just to the south of Scarborough station, in possibly the late 1950’s. The second photo’ shows a third and final view of Ivatt 2MT 2-6-0 46409, pictured working the "RCTS/SLS North Eastern Tour 1963" through Dunnington Halt on the Derwent Valley Light Railway and heading towards Dunnington station and Selby, on the 27th September, 1963. Thirdly, we have a photo’ of the 10.12 Leeds - Hull, as it passes Gilberdyke Junction, formed of a typical four car hybrid formation of class 123/124 DMU cars, on the 14th February, 1981. The last photo’ is a view of 47580, County of Norfolk, on a Scarborough to Carnforth ecs, on the 8th April, 2012. Best regards, Rob.

Had an allotment next to my dad's plot behind the waterworks. He told me that the tramway was operated by shire horses.

RMweb Gold Popular Post Market65 Posted March 26 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 26 Good evening, everyone. Firstly, thank you, Mick, for straightening up 2524, and the plan of part of Springhead shed. This evening we another four photo’s to enjoy seeing, thanks to Jamerail, RobT653, John Law and Ernies Railway Archive, all on Flickr. The first one is a view of 40034, as it sits under the station roof at Scarborough, platform 4, on the 10th September, 1983. Secondly, we have a photo’ of a class 108 and a class 101 DMU as it makes a smoky exit from Scarborough with a Hull service on 2nd August, 1986. “Unfortunately,” the photographer in the caption reads, “I have not recorded the details of the service.” In the station is a Class 110 "Calder Valley" DMU and 45146, which was to form the 12:20 Scarborough to Leicester (SO) service. The third photo’ shows H&BRwy, 0-6-0T, 3, at Springhead shed, in pre grouping days. Finally, we have a photo’ of Malton shef, on the 16th June, 1962, with class J27, 65844. Also a J39 is part visible alongside, and an LMS 2-6-4T. Best regards, Rob.

RMweb Gold Popular Post Market65 Posted March 27 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted March 27 Good evening, everyone. This evening, we have a set of four photo’s thanks to John Turner, Richard, and Andy Hughes, all on Flickr. The first one is a view of Trainload liveried (unbranded) 0-6-0DE 08499 manoeuvres MGR hopper wagons whilst they are loaded with imported coal by an unidentifiable Caterpillar 980C Wheel Loader at King Geroge Dock, Hull, in c1991. Next we have a photo’ of Riddles WD "Austerity" 2-8-0s (with 90704 to the right of the image) near the coaling stage at Dairycoates (50B) MPD, in c1966. The third photo’ shows D49/2 62763 'The Fitzwiliam' at Hull Dairycoates. No date given, but certainly the 1950’s. Finally, here’s a photo’ of 66419, as it does it's bit for the enviroment as it passes Hull Anlaby Road Junction working the 09:30 Hull - Doncaster route/refresher working, on the 7th April, 2022. RMweb Gold Market65 Posted March 28 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 28 Good evening, everyone. This evening, thanks to knoxrj, and Andy Mason, both on Flickr, we have a further four photo’s to enjoy seeing. The first one is a view of class J74, 461, at Hull Springhead, sometime in the 1930’s. The second photo’ shows a most interesting short train. A class C12, 4542, is hauling the 13.55 (SO) ex-South Howden, on the 21st April, 1934. The formation is an ex-NER 6 wheel passenger brake van, and a non corridor, 49’, eight compartment all third. Presumably first class was not required on this service - a steam railcar substitution? Thirdly, we have a photo’ of 47592, hauling a railtour called The Manchester Executive Pullman, at Seamer West Junction, heading away on the York line. No date given, but is possibly the 1980’s. Finally, here’s a photo’ of 45107+45007, on the `45 finale`, date being the 3rd October, 1987. The headcode was almost certainly 1Z46. mikemeg
In an earlier post, I posted a couple of photographs of 45562 Alberta (really Galatea?) on the Scarborough Spa Express on August 13th, 2020. Quite a surprise as this loco had been withdrawn and scrapped during the late 1960's. This train would often turn out some quite unusual locomotives, none more so than this one taken almost a year after the Jubilee. So, on August 5th, 2021, the Scarborough Spa Express was headed up by a Merchant Navy - 35018 - again absolutely immaculate. I guess for those of us who saw the end of steam, in the early and mid 1960's, the rebuilt Merchant Navy's along with the Coronation's, the Peppercorn A1's and the Britannia's, probably represented the absolute zenith of express passenger locomotive development in this country. So to see one, once again, was just a joy. Cheers Mike Edited March 29 by mikemeg

I'm intrigued by the location of the C12, is it Springhead Halt?. I remember seeing the rail tour advertised in rail enthusiast about the peak tour when i was 13. I waited all day for it too pass Hessle Haven at my aunties house. It was getting late so i thought it was a no show and went into the kitchen just as the peaks belted belted past the window :-( . I had to wait nearly 30 years before i found out what they were.
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted March 29 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted March 29 Good evening, everyone. Firstly, thank you, Mick, for the excellent photo’ of 461, at Springhead. And thank you, Mike, for the story behind the photo’ of MN, 35018, British India Line on the Scarborough Spa Express at Scarborough on the 5th August, 2021. I am not sure but in the supplied caption it states the C12 is on an ex-South Howden to Hull service so that could be near Springhead Halt. Now, this evening, we have a further four photo’s to enjoy courtesy of Andy Mason, John Turner, RobT653, and Robert Gadsdon, all on Flickr. The first one is a view of BR English Electric Class 40, 40075, on the newly-installed turntable just outside Scarborough station, sometime in 1981. Next we have a photo’ of D2158, on hire to the Derwent Valley Light Railway. So, York shed's Class 03 0-6-0DM shunter D2158 passes Osbaldwick with a down DVLR pick-up freight, on the 15th April, 1964. The third photo’ is a study of 117306, which has clearly just been outshopped in Regional Railways livery, as seen at Bridlington South on the 24th August, 1991. It's a long haul for a DMU though, this was the 12:56 (SO) Scarborough to Leicester service, a Summer Saturday dated working for holiday traffic. Finally, here’s a photo’ of RES 47776 departing Scarborough, on a special train of which I am, sadly, unable to read the headboard, so cannot get the details from Six Bells Junction. micknich2003
Rob, I'm sure the train is going to South Howden, left distance are what I take to be the houses on Willeby Road etc, then they would only be a couple of years old. Far right is Springhead works etc, just visable right middle is No38 bridge, this was later filled in. 7
RMweb Premium Davexoc Posted March 30 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 30 56 minutes ago, GMKAT7 said: Good evening Rob, Enlarging the photo it looks like the headboard says "The Sparkle Express", if that helps. Cheers, Nigel. Doesn't really help there because Six Bells reports it as running with 47767 and was Kings X to Carlisle https://www.sixbellsjunction.co.uk/90s/960928_1.htm Also 47776 was flush front at No.2 end and ran a Sparkle Express from Cambridge to Minehead also in 1996, which then in 1997 ran with an HST from Peterborough. So The Sparkle Express name was used several times... http://class47.co.uk/c47_zoom_v3.php?img=1129051020200 And 47767 doesn't fit the bill either as it had plaques above the nameplates which don't look right anyway. So all very confusing.... http://class47.co.uk/c47_zoom_v3.php?img=1196023205000 So after much looking, I think it is this one.... http://class47.co.uk/c47_zoom_v3.php?img=1179051146200 Reason being, where the jumpers exit the front, you can see they appear to have been put over the old warning flashes, and it has the right combination of buffer shape, right nameplate style, ETH dummy socket position, cut bufferbeam style, single lamp iron, and the jumper additions including the cable clips are all painted orange, plus there is similar oil staining on the No. 1 end bogie and battery box. The only thing that isn't right is the warning flashes are still the old type, so possibly some time after 18th May 1996 they were replaced?

They are courtesy of Ado Griff, Robert Gadsdon, Chris, and John Turner, all on Flickr. The first one is a view of 03174 at Scarborough loco stabling point, in the summer of 1975. The caption states that it was a bit strange, since it was based at Healey Mills at the time. The second photo’ is a sad view of seven Ex-NER LNER B16s at Hull Dairycoates loco shed, on a sunny day in August 1964, with B16/3 61463 nearest the camera. This loco had been withdrawn in June 1964, and was scrapped in September. Thirdly, we have a photo’ of Scarborough on the 29th July, 1981, with a line up of locomotives of classes 03, 08, 31, 40 and 45’s. It will never be like that again… The last one is a view of WD, 90677, at Dairycoates, on the 25th February, 1967. And it does appear that the tender is right up against something - uneven track?
