RMweb Gold Dunsignalling Posted March 9, 2016 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 9, 2016 Here's another Option 1: Steam locos are kettles Option 2: Diesel locos are featureless paraffin cans Option 3: Electric locos are God's gift. Discuss. Cheers, Mick Now, where's that knob button?
Talltim
Isn't there an apostrophe missing? No, there's an 'a' missing. And what is VB in this context? Seems unlikely to be Visual Basic.

Talltim
Couldn't agree more - No this isn't just a 'me too' - I've actually got a solution. One of the biggest problems we suffer is that polite and reasoned debate often gets derailed by a pair of opposing c*ck waving 'experts', who then get into heated debate, (at least one of them must be wrong as their views are diametrically opposed), and then a perfectly good thread gets locked down. To solve this I put forward my new scheme that will resurrect one of the buttons that Andy removed from the 'like, agree, funny etc' group This would be the 'Knob' button, which could be activated by other Forum Members, when they see a situation developing, and think 'He's a bit of a Knob' - Now with a threshold yet to be established, probably around 10, if you get 10 or more 'Knobs' on a thread you get barred from further posting on that Topic, and will have to go off and play somewhere else. We can then go back to civilised debate. With any luck after a couple of rounds of being told they are a bit of a Knob they might get the message and bu**er off and bother someone else's Forum. Peter PS It would probably fail under the onslaught of 'My right to free speech/Censorship' brigade Surely it should be a knob knob? Every person that uses it turns it up a notch and when it gets to eleven they're out.

Poggy1165
Have we mentioned the Gresley/Thompson debate yet? That usually good for producing more heat than the average domestic boiler, and no resolution is ever achieved. And we really need someone to point out that 'modern image' is no longer an appropriate term, given that it was coined circa 1964, and many of the 'modern image' locos have long since been scrapped. RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted March 9, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 9, 2016 And what is VB in this context? Seems unlikely to be Visual Basic. Victoria Bitter. Sometimes referred to as Vile Brew. A staple of many diets where Aussie blokes are concerned. It is widely thought of as disgusting and has some very sad effects (especially in the hot weather) upon some people of inducing excessive violence and stupidity. It's probably popular because it's quite cheap and because of its cult status. https://www.victoriabitter.com.au/agegate?destination= (entry by day of birth required) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_Bitter

RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted March 9, 2016 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 9, 2016 It doesn't really matter what the question is, the correct answer is 42. I have long contended that this was in itself an error and that the correct answer is in fact 54. When Ford and Arthur pull "random" letters from the Scrabble bag they spell out "What do you get if you multiply six by nine" which proves Deep Thought's program contained an error. Of more than passing interest is that Hotblack Desiato was indeed (as per book credit) by kind permission of Hotblack Desiato. They were the estate agency in north London from whom Douglas Adams rented a flat and wherein he allegedly attempted to entertain a girl he met in a cafe in Rickmansworth. The displays on the numerous information screens aboard the Heart of Gold were programmed by Southampton University Electronic Engineering graduates and included brief messages which include "Douglas Adams detoxification now complete" and - apparently (though I haven't been able to prove it) the name and phone number of the Rickmansworth girl. That's another thing that annoys me - why small suppliers don't have an online presence (even if they don't offer full e-commerce) - it's so cheap and easy these days that there really is no excuse.
