On that note I have a few times recently heard the heavy drone of interesting turboprops over South Oxfordshire (could have been an A400M as they make a fairly unique sound). It was though, each time either an AN-26 or AN-12 flying from Birmingham to somewhere. They really do drone compared to western turboprops.

I wish I'd paid more attention as I probably could have cleared the Air Cavok fleet at 22:15 most evenings, until recently. That's if you can claim a cop if you've heard it...

Me and my mate used to go to as many USAF open day/shows as we could…..one time at Alconbury in the early 1970’s they had a several F4 and Sabres that still had repair patches on the tails/fuselage….I could just see those AK47s being aimed and let loose as they roared over as the pilots let loose.

About 25 years ago I worked on a project in Thailand with a chap who'd flown F4s for the US Navy in Vietnam. He said that most of the time the patrols were as boring as hell but just once in a while you felt you'd earned your flying pay when a SAM came past close enough to read the number on the side. I don't think he was winding me up - he wasn't the type for that.

I trust that someone had carefully engineered the refuelling probe to be easily severed, rather than damaging the blade? And presumably the crew took the first possible opportunity to stop and have a look at the state of the blades?

Best wishes

US Navy F4 just pestered the Halong Bay square head boats…..not sure they often carried napalm tanks at low level, that was more for the ground based F4……then again it was the US and they really weren’t that organised towards the end 🤣

At another Alconbury show there was a smart display by four RF4C Phantoms which was quite amusing as when finished they were lined up for landing very closely 1234 when as was the display norm at the time the leader radio chatter was broadcast over the tannoys when the leader (who was last in line) suddenly gave the “flame, flame.flame” warning to number three, it’s afterburner had caught fire and had a lovely twenty foot or so flame out of the exhaust, it landed very quickly (they were literally 100-200 foot on approach) and before it had stopped rolling the canopy was open and the pilot was on the tarmac, there was a Husky Fire fighting copper on the apron which was in the air and dropping foam over the Phantom in a matter of minutes, if not less….it was a bit exciting at the time!

Anyway point is my mate and me were thumbing a lift back to his Aunts place after the show (very late) and we got picked up by an airman in some big yank tank and we got a very quick ride back to the local village, turned out the guy was the ground crew chief of that particular Phantom and he was very pissed off about having to go back that evening and he said his crew would be spending the next week stripping down and cleaning the “sh1tty foam” out of every nook and cranny, he wasn’t happy, but he was a fast driver 😵

That was also the show that the Golden Knights were giving a drop display and they were scattered all over the field, one landed a bit too close to the main rail line, another broke his leg on landing on a runway!

Not their finest show 😁

You might like to think that. But the rotor is the only thing that is keeping you airborne and, if you hear a mighty bang and you see a bit of your aircraft disappear into the distance, you might want to check!

Best wishes

No one’s saying you should do the local landscaping with your UH-60 but if you have to it’ll probably get away with it 😉

Had an "amateur" photting trip to Nellis AFB near Las Vegas about 10 days back as part of a holiday.

Managed to see a few varieties of flying devices.

The USAF Thunderbirds were seen in the distance lifting off away from us, but we were at the wrong end of the airfield for those. Although the F22s going vertical could be seen about 3 miles away!

The Herc with the rear doors open was taken from Alcatraz Island. The Bay area seems to see regular flyovers with military stuff.

BTW - public viewing at both ends of Nellis is quite accessible and some of the exits are quite spectacular. I missed a couple as a wing of four would progressively get lower/tighter on lift-off

Is that a Mitchell?

I think so, I did not pay too much attention as I was getting a bit tired by then. The AFM is quite a large facility.

  • 2 weeks later...

I watched the Jubilee fly past on BBC News here in the US.  The BBC News web site had a nice feature on the aircraft taking part but the live coverage had no commentary and spent as much screen time watching the Royals watch the fly past.....

A few snaps from East Kirkby today, including a few of the Typhoons returning after the flypast. Please excuse the quality of some. I had to really push the zoom on my camera and then crop the photos, so some quality is lost but it was lovely to be reunited with the Lancaster and stand under the wing as I did in 1965.
