A handful of early DMU photos from Dad's albums - including one from the family album showing my mother seeing me off at Highbridge, as I return to boarding school in Surrey. I also appear as the gangly youth on the platform at Brixham.

I don't know where or when the view from the DMU was taken as it was in an assorted envelope of negatives. I wondered about the Ledbury area, but really haven't got anything to base that on.

That last shot of the interlaced tracks on the viaduct looks suspiciously like Ledbury Viaduct. Low brick wall with handrail on the top, and the hills in the background look right along with the curve of the viaduct. Photo below is my evidence, although looking the opposite direction, and the opposite track in use. Photo taken from 47807 on the first Hereford-Padd on Sun 22nd March 1992.

Hi

The first photo was I believe taken at Highbridge GWR station. You can see the ex S&D line crossing on the level ahead of the DMU.

Lovely shots I must say.

Many thanks

I used to leave from Highbridge, Bristol & Exeter and head to Paddington, changing at Weston-super-Mare, then across London on the Bakerloo to Waterloo and finally down to Leatherhead. Homeward trips were much more fun - Leatherhead to Effingham Junction, then Guildford, Woking and Templecombe. Then up to Evercreech Junction and back along the Somerset Central to Highbridge! In this photo I would have been sixteen. I can't remember when I started doing the journeys on my own.

Here are three more photos from South Wales in the 1980s, south of Cardiff this time, two at Cadoxton and one at Penarth, (I had arrived here in error - I had intended to go to Barry, these bl**dy DMUs all look the same).

Another pair of DMUs in South Wales, this time at Barry

Class 116 set C307 again, this time working the 10.53 departure from Barry Island and seen at Barry, 21/7/82

post-7081-0-11600400-1474646987.jpg

The Cardiff Valley services were not entirely in the hands of class 116 sets, in the early 1980s Canton had five class 117 sets and here C454 (51352, 59359, 51394) is seen at Barry with a northbound train for Cardiff.

37302 and 37288 pass the other way with a loaded MGR set for Aberthaw, 17/9/81.

cheers

Now for my contributions - as opposed to Dad's. There are three from a holiday based in Llandudno in the 1990s. The other set only shows one DMU. They were taken at Oxford as I waited for a train to London. The 08 arrived from the Didcot direction but in the up platform. It was hauling the 47, a barrier coach and the DMU. I guessed that the DMU had failed, the 47 went to the rescue, but also failed and then the Osney sidings shunter had been sent to rescue the whole sorry lot..

Nice. Does anyone know if that big slag heap is still there behind the station or has it been levelled as so many have?

As for 47s breaking down- 47s NEVER break down, they just have a well earned rest.

' Does anyone know if that big slag heap is still there behind the station or has it been levelled as so many have?'

Are we talking The Great Orme or the Said Business School? OK, you probably meant at Blaenau.

There were moves to run trial trains to move the slate waste heaps from Blaenau Ffestiniog a few years ago, but they met with a lot of local opposition for various reasons.

EDIT: One cannot help but be in awe of the size of that heap, towering over the 101. But after just reading the report about the Aberfan tragedy, I'm not sure there is an appropriately respectful way to describe these heaps.

Sorry for ot.

Wonderful photos.

There seems to be some kind of basket on the side of the DMU under the front passenger window.

Does anybody know what it is?

It was a plastic mesh shopping bag/basket. A fairly rigid material - probably polythene of similar grade to washing up bowls. Fascinating what grabs people's attention.

Finally two more from Barry, just class 116 sets again I am afraid,

post-7081-0-90452100-1474828412_thumb.jpg

Class 116 set C307 yet again arriving from Barry Island, this time with a bonus semaphore signal, the signalman has already set the road for another service to Barry Island. The line continuing straight on behind the DMU is the Vale of Glamorgan route via Aberthaw which rejoins the main line at Bridgend, at this time there was no regular passenger service over this line apart from diversions during engineering work, 21/7/82

Another class 116 set C319 swings around the curve away from Barry heading towards Barry Island, 21/7/82

cheers
