Thanks to the Black Friday offer, and my accumulated points, I placed a reasonably sized order yesterday evening. Very much looking forward to it arriving in due course (once you get Warley out of the way!) And setting to work painting them, and then populating my layout and a few more locos. Now, where will the Rev. Awdry go?!

Cheers

Good morning everyone, it appears that  I missed a few updates on here, so I will do this months and then a roundup of new releases that may have been missed. Apologies :)

Welcome to our first newsletter from our new larger studio in Bristol Barton Hill!  A stones throw from Bristol Barrow Road as was, our new space is located in an old Primary School and has a much more light and spacious feel than our previous office.

Our new address is Modelu, Unit 9, The Old School House, Salisbury Street, Bristol, BS5 9UD

We are also happy to announce that our new premises has a dedicated space for 3D body scanning and a new venture for us - a YouTube studio for creating content such as product launches, painting techniques, product guides and more!  Look out for our first videos later this month.

Sadly many of our international customers have been hit by double issues with Royal Mail Tracked International.  Firstly in early December during the mail strikes it appears Royal Mail lost at least one whole bag of our international shipments, none of which were registered on the Royal Mail Tracking system.  We've been doing our absolute best to identify and replace these missing orders, only then to be scuppered by the recent hack to Royal Mails International IT systems.  We've just received notice that Royal Mail International is operational again, though some tracking information may be unavailable.

Given our experiences with lost packages and no tracking information and the likely enormous backlog of international tracked packages backed up in the system, we are unwilling to jump straight back in and start posting via Royal Mail International.  We are looking at alternative solutions whilst the backlog clears and some system stability returns to Royal Mail.  If you would like an update on your order or to discuss alternative methods of delivery, please get in touch with us.

We are very excited to announce that we will be on the new season of 'Hornby: A Model World'.  We were filmed back in June last year 3D scanning on site at Margate and editing and printing figures back at our studio in Bristol.   The episode we featuring airs on Monday 6th February! We are sure you wont want to miss it!

We are pleased to welcome two new stockists to the Modelu family - Sawyer Models in Leigh and Model Junction in Bury St Edmunds.  Both shops will be stocking a range of our most popular OO scale crews and bundles giving customers in the area a great opportunity to see our products in the flesh.  We are also extremely grateful to Andy Sawyer for his assistance in the design of our new Bachmann Quarry Hunslet crews

image.png.33f9c0ec39490665c685e962bdc3e9b4.png

Many customers have been asking whether we'd provide STL files for them to print at home themselves, the short answer is yes we will! We are currently planning content for a new Modelu Patreon, whereby modellers with their own 3D printers can subscribe to different membership levels and receive monthly downloads.  With such huge scope for such a service we'd like to get an idea of what people would be interested in printing, so later this month we'll be sending a survey to our mailing list subscribers.

Your feedback will be invaluable in shaping our patreon we so can ensure subscribers are getting the best value for their money!

The popularity of our OO9 crews has been enormous, so we jumped at the chance to produce bespoke crews for the new Bachmann OO9 Quarry Hunslet's.  This was made possible by the kind help of our new stockist Sawyer Models and Derails of Coleford.

We've 3 new crew packs, 2 designed for the closed cab version and 1 for the deminuative open cab model.  Available via our website now and shortly via our stockists!  Thanks to Tobi Johnson for the painted examples - you can see these in store at Sawyer Models.

Been making up guttering and downpipes (using Evergreen 221, 1.2mm) from Modelu parts, fiddly, but worth it.

I agree, their bits and pieces are really good. I am populating my 70D Engine shed with their engine shed small components.

Kind regards,

That guttering looks fantastic and I had missed that on the ModelU website. Will look to add it to my under construction Scalescenes building.

Just took a look at the ModelU parts and the links for pipes are to the now defunct Eileen’s Emporium website. Can anyone say what was referenced as I assume the links were for the correct size strips?

Thanks,

Roy

It would be nice to have hoppers that fit in corners, rather than try and butcher the existing ones.

Thanks.

Yes, it is in that kind of style, slight detail differences, but no thread about it.

Good afternoon all,

Please see below another update for you all from Alan!

image.png.82843da5281eb39d5fcda116109e6bbe.png

8 years ago I ended my 25 year IT career and officially started my new life as Modelu! Looking back I still can't quite believe how big a step into the unknown it was, but thanks to the support of friends and knowledge that nothing like it had been before I took that step.

Fast forward to 2023, and we've 1000 products available in 20+ scales, 75 exhibition appearances, 10 stockists around the world, three features on national TV and over 5000 body scans and 4TB of data!

More importantly, it is you our customers that I have to thank, for taking the leap of faith all those years ago and buying our bright red figures, or getting yourself 3d scanned at a show.  It is that faith in our products and our attention to detail that drives us to create the most accurate figurines on the market.

None of this would be possible without the amazing people who I've worked with over the years. I'm really lucky to work with such great guys at Modelu - Harrison, Chris and Ed have transformed the way we work as a company.  Thanks guys!

image.png.98cd9c042819b926880743b5168de2fd.png

March saw us back at the BRM Ally Pally show where we had a great weekend 3D scanning and displaying our new products.  It was also a great oppourtunity to chat with other manufacturers and discuss new collaborations.

One of which was with Railway Laser Lines who have produced a fantastic cut-away version of their new diesel depot kit.  This provided the perfect setting to show our new BR Depot Staff Pack (see below) alongside a product from another company that Modelu will soon be working with - Cavalex!

image.png.4c10238b49468cf9a49e397ac2459dcb.png

Our Modelu 2022/23 Catalogue is now available to download as a PDF for free! Our biggest edition yet at over 140 pages and over 200 new products. Including a figure preparation and painting guide by Dan Evason, prototype images and customer photographs and a two page article on the day in a life of a steam shed.

image.png.5fd9be2bfc12c2deb26bb15fc7211af4.png

Our popular Wickham Trolley Crew Pack has now been modified to fit the super Ellis Clark O Gauge Wickham.  The pack features 3 PW Gang and a tool pack.  Look out for futher products from us on this theme in the summer!

image.png.07ea1c7c334f615f4124718681e81eac.png

Thank to Chris Field from the Severn Valley Railway we have the first bundle of our brand new range of BR depot staff.  This first release includes fitters inspecting, a fitter working and two painters.  The poses have been inspired by images of people working in Crewe and Swindon and we'll be looking at adding more figures in the coming months.  Actions such as cutting up locos, operating lifts and cranes and all manner of other tasks will be covered.  We'll also be working closely with West Hill Wagon Works to ensure our figures can be paired up with their superb products! In these scenes we've used their Inspection Platforms.

Good afternoon everyone, have a few update for you from Alan to keep you all up to date.

We've had a super busy start to May with the Bristol exhibition and our Coronation sale.  Though development time has been scarce of late, we have been able to expand our range of animals which have proved so popular since first launching last year.   We are always looking for new ideas, so please get in touch with your requests.

We are running a new modelling competition this month - using a newly released bundle of three people in conversation which need to be involved in your scene somehow. Our favourite scene made using these figures will win Modelu modeller of the month for June. Bonus points for giving them a good caption with your entry!

Due to these figures being in the competition we have them at 20% off up until the end of June. Please see the link below to get yours today!

This months competition is also still open so please keep posting your pictures to be in with a chance of winning a £25 Modelu voucher!

We had a fantastic weekend at the Bristol Model Railway Exhibition at Thornbury Leisure Centre.  It was also our daughter Margot's first exhibition and she absolutely loved it! After losing Bristol O Gauge show this has become our home exhibition and we'll be returning again next year.  It was great to see so many layouts featuring our figures, in particular Bunkers Lane (above right), Fairhaven Town and the Pendon-esq Dewerstone (below).   We'd like to wise a big thanks to Dan at DeRails for the loan of his OO9 locos for our display.

image.png.7ec56a75031be51b57a5b052b10f56f0.png

July sees us at the Bluebell Railway for the first time! We are happy to announce that we've been invited to attend with our 3d body scanning equipment and range of figurines.  We'll be also taking this great oppourtunity to work on a range of figures with the Bluebell staff and volunteers to produce a new range of Edwardian and Pre-Grouping crews.  If you can make it to Sheffield Park on the 1/2nd July be sure to come and say hi!

image.png.09b8f0d7034854d1cc30d9980dd8c464.png

Thanks to John Creasey and Colin Porter we now have SR Engine Head Signals added to the range  Edward has done a great job on these, even modelling the distinctive handle hanging down. Available on the website now in packs of 5.

image.png.2c9017ab2a20771d82ff2aa43e7786f6.png

We have Also now added chickens, foxes, donkeys, staffordshire bull terriers and basset hounds to the range.

Hi Chris,

Lovely picture of your family. I have bought some of your excellent stuff for the fitters workshop in my model of 70D. First class kit and when I get to populating the shed and Basingstoke Station, I shall order much more of the little people and their bits and bobs.

Keep up the really good work and thanks,

Out of interest I had a scan done at warley (that is admittedly forgotten about until this week) but haven’t received the prints, are you still working through the stuff you did there or should I have had something by now?

That’s great news Chris - are they still going to come in a choice of arm lengths? It’ll be a very useful innovation if so!
