APOLLO
That's twice my son has been affected travelling to Uni at Liverpool by Networks Rails walls collapsing. Wigan NW a few months ago and now this. He managed to go this morning via Nodding Donkey Wigan Wallgate to Kirby & on (hopefully) to Moorfields. Isn't part of the Liverpool "underground" system shut for track renewal ? He's on his way, but not reported back so I assume he is "getting there" !! I have to say it, Network Rails civil infrastructure is in a mess in some places. Unchecked vegetation ruins brickwork. caradoc
Brit15, the BBC News report states 'A section of trackside wall "loaded with concrete and cabins by a third party" fell'; So it would appear not actually to be a fault with Network Rail's infrastructure. Jim Martin
Isn't part of the Liverpool "underground" system shut for track renewal ? The bit that's closed is the Wirral Line loop under the city centre. Trains from Kirkby are on the Northern Line, which I used to get into work this morning and it was fine. I have a job interview in Manchester tomorrow: my (pre-booked) train was from Waterloo to South Parkway on the Northern Line, then Trans-Pennine Express from there to Manchester. This should be okay, since TPE trains to Scarborough are supposed to be running to/from South Parkway. I imagine that the Merseyrail train will fill out at Moorfields or Central (although they're running more 6-car trains, rather than running 3-cars after the morning peak as they usually do) and that the TPE service will be rammed, since the East Midlands services are terminating at Manchester and Northern's service to Manchester by both the CLC and Chat Moss routes is very much reduced. All-in-all, I'm pretty chuffed that I arranged to arrive in Manchester several hours earlier than I strictly needed to. Jim

RMweb Premium Kris Posted March 1, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 1, 2017 Keep someone busy working out whos getting the bill.... More likely to keep a few people busy working out just how much the bill is going to be. I bet the builders and their insurers are looking at that with some trepidation. APOLLO
These old Williamson tunnels may have something to do with the collapse - maybe not. Same location. https://dobraszczyk.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/21.jpg https://fowt1769.files.wordpress.com/2016/02/edge-hill-tunnels-map1.jpg Google map location, Note the Williamson tunnel heritage centre just to the south. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.402178,-2.9590322,294a,20y,41.68t/data=!3m1!1e3 Network Rail twitter feed & photos https://twitter.com/NetworkRailLIV/status/836972832273870848 Williamson tunnels https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Williamson_Tunnels https://williamsontunnels.com/the-tunnels/map/ This is a far bigger incident than many think. Not just a bit of the top of the wall, the fill behind it has moved. Lots more locations similar between Edge Hill & Lime St also. I'll not jump to conclusions but lack of regular detailed inspection could be a factor (as in Wigan NW). Brit15
Zomboid
Whenever the cause it's known, chances are it'll be a multitude of things, the absence of any one of which would have avoided it. I'm not going to speculate on what they could be since I know absolutely nothing about retaining walls.
Tom D
Whatever the cause, thankfully no one was injured, I can only imagine the effect of that much debris falling onto a train carrying passengers.

RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted March 2, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 2, 2017 Looking at the BBC report it looked as if the actual retaining wall that forms the cutting side is OK and that the problem is with ground above that where there appear to be some other walls of different construction and that the containers were at the top of these. However as suggested above it may have affected the NR property. I was out and about yesterday and spent half an hour at Sheffield in my way home. Things were obviously well in hand and there were plenty of clear and informative announcements. That was good to hear. I hope that things are sorted quickly.
