LOL ! I would have done 45 in from Oxford and also gone for 7 on the up midnight. Would take the risk like Gwiwer hoping she could negotiate entering Padd without ruining the trackplan !

I thought the 50s would be favoured. Funny how the 47/4 output on the Manchesters drum up so little interest. They were the ultimate bowl out loco - so I like to schedule one on the Padd occasionally when a 50 is due an exam to keep things realistic! This can throw an extra 50 to add to the Oxford or next Padd working - or a freight if I'm feeling really mean. No peak fans either.

 

I'll upload the runners and riders every so often as there are few layout updates now it's largely completed.

Hello again! Sorry for the lapse in postings, been waiting for some deliveries to make a start with some grasswork.

 

Here are the results of some grass areas using a £25 EBAY static grass applicator and International Models 6mm autumn & winter grass. I have chosen small areas to practise on and hope to "branch out" as it were as I get confident with the results. I am delighted so far, even if the detail is quite small - it is worth the effort.

 

The OVA is applied to the area to be treated (patchy in this case as I want a tufted area). The brass screw is gently screwed in adjacent to the area, crocodile clip added and off we go! Here are some pictures.

Here the PVA was added to a mainly ballast base in blobs and gently spread out. You can see the screw into the board here...

The area once dried and the applicator teased over the area a couple of times.

Here the hanging basket liner area has been treated directly - looks a great improvement.

Very nice what make of powders do you use?

 

Hi - I use cars weathering powders. The main ingredient is black powder paint. The main exhaust deposits is almost black mixed with a little brown. Then more brown is added to the roof, body sides and especially grilles etc..

Crikey - all this summer rain is giving the grass a growth spurt! He's some recent treated areas around the layout.

Cheers Neal.

 

The majority of Hornby blue class 31s come with factory weathering, which is a ghastly light brown gunge liberally sprayed at mid body height. I have removed most of it wih T cut, and given this renumbered class 31 a coat of matt varnish aerosol and used weatheing powders instead. I think it looks a lot better.

 

Now ETS fitted 31412 - it can work air cons. Just need an ETS cable to put on the fron tnow. Have also done 31420

Hi Craig,

Nice line up of class 31s, I am working on an ETH one myself, I haven't done the ETH cable and socket yet either. It's looking like I will have to make one from scratch.

Lovely layout, certainly a lot of class 31's! Just looking at 31412, was this originally 31270, the reason I say is it looks like the bufferbeam is sagging down and one corner looks cracked so could be the start of crumbling chassis issue??

Thanks - it was 270, the one Hornby repaired so I dont want to fiddle too much with it. I'm on the lookout for a chassis as it's never been the same since.

Have decided to fully fence in the yard at Mount Charles to give some definition to the main line as it seemed odd not to have some sort of boundary between the yard and mainline. I made up some scratchbuilt wooden fencing panels and concrete posts using slaters plasticard and H section. Here are some pictures.

 

I cut the tops of some of the panels to show damage and rot, and weathered them to pick out the ridges a bit better.

The area was first treated to a line of static grass to give some "age" to the scene, and small gates added in between for access to the railway - these act as important scene breakers

The fencing complete with 47508 SS Great Briton on the main line waiting to drop into an occupied platform. The fencing gives a feeling of depth to the scene that I feel was missing.
