'Humour' on layouts - good or bad?

Nothing wrong with a bit of humour - it is a hobby after all.

We had a Faller road system truck on Blackmill branded "Sofa King" with a picture of a comfy couch on the side.

But on the back it had "Our prices are Sofa King low......"

Cheers,

Mick

More "well done" humour that springs to mind, from Roger Nicholls, a prolific builder of US-outline layouts which I used to see at various Northern shows in the 80s & 90s.

On N gauge layouts he had various mines - the "Gerrovitz Mine" and the "Dissole-Hartov Mine" tickled my sense of humor.

As did, on an HO switching layout, a series of signs along the rear fence:

"Trailers for Sale or Rent"

"Rooms to let, 50c"

etc...

I recall those :)

I also the many copies afterwards :(

and Wayne Kerr must have the largest industrial conglomerate / corporation west of the Mississippi :D

Mick -

Truth is stranger than fiction. There is a chain of discount furniture stores in the US called "Sofa King". And yes, you can guess their slogan..

Tesco's ill-timed and advised foray into the US convenience store market was entitled "Fresh & Easy". They ran a short-lived advertising campaign along the lines of "making shopping F & Easy"..

We live in an age where everyone is in a rush to be offended . Well, be offended, your arm won’t fall off or anything .....

I’m quite keen on the noch “ sexy scenes” range as it’s a reminder of my life in the period I model, before I got married.

I greatly enjoyed an HO layout featuring a fictitious German location which had shop names translated from English into German; a rather insalubrious bar 'Speichel und Sagespane' and a gym 'Stosweiter' are two I recall.

But I thought the factory on one club layout should be a rope factory owned by Messrs Pierrepoint

Well actually, the rope was provided by those proven specialists in old rope, the Civil Service. More subtly you might have included Albert's sometime public house 'Help the Poor Struggler' just so long as you didn't put a notice inside reading 'No hanging around this bar'. AP was very insistent on that...

These days you probably don't need to use a cam just have easy access to change the battery!

Do they do AA batteries in 1:76 scale?  Might be a stretch fitting them in otherwise no matter how easy the access...

I hate things like that.  I don't swear myself and I really don't like supposedly funny signs punning swear words.  Prudish perhaps in this day and age but I just find them unpleasant.

John Allan (of the USA) reported tired of the name of his Gorre and Daphetid (pronounced Gory and Defeated).

He had a warehouse named for his editor at Model Railroader, Lynn Westcott,

Lynn's Archives

Ancient Manuscripts and Altered Articles.

He also had a dinosaur for shunting.

I have a camping coach which has been let to HMQ and the Dook.

I've seen some good ones. Industries such as a rubber chicken factory and a bagpipe factory, and (one for the Carry On fans) a station called Long Hampton.

But if you look at the Whacky Signs thread, sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.

I had an old Superquick shop built up (may still have it somewhere) labelled "Rene Pogel - Importer of French Wines & Spirits". My mother had looked at the model for about twenty years before she finally worked out the name and declared "That's disgusting!". She still went away laughing.

You wouldn't have been keen on our planned restaurant for a US switching layout then - The Dripping Beaver.

I've still got the plastic beaver I bought which was going to be mounted - on the roof.

And I couldn't let it pass without this

A friend of mine plonked some 'sexy scenes' in the landscape of his home and sometimes exhibition layout without thinking. When we got to an exhibition, he suddenly realised that children would be present so we hastily made some paper tents to hide them from view.

Hate is defined as abhor or detest.  It was therefore appropriate.  Contextually, disagree would be inappropriate - I don't "disagree" with the language, I really dislike it. But each to his own.
