What are the Scotrail ones like to travel in?

In my experience, mostly smooth and quiet - last time, my assigned seat was by the wheelchair space, so I ended up with a vast panoramic view out of both sides!

And a couple more video stills from this morning.

Four in one!

Quite comfortable. They have Grammer seats (same as Inverness 158s) in Std and the ex-GWR leather ones in First.

Spacing is better than GWR Std was though, reduced from 84 seats to 74.

The main gripe I would say is fewer toilets, lack of space in the underframe means a tank can only be accommodated at one end - so vehicles have only one toilet max now.

(4-car sets have three, 5-cars have four.)

Also, note that by no means all services have catering.

ScotRail is still struggling to recruit hospitality staff, so there is a published list on their website each week of services with catering.

Final note: substitutions by 170s (and occasionally 158s) do still occur. On average about 13 of the booked 15 weekday diagrams are HST, the balance 170s.

Substitutions are more common at weekends, bank holidays and when there is significant service disruption.

Do they go well with a lack of trailers, my main experience are 7 on with Valentas.

Yes definitely; the 2+4s for example will reach 100mph within about 150 secs from a stand and can even climb Slochd at a steady 60mph on one power car... ;)

A curious HST move that appears to happen Mon-Thu is 5A26, Aberdeen to Aberdeen via Inverurie turnback siding, non-stop, driver-only.

This evening it was 43021 and 43149, seen here returning through Inverurie station.

They do still carry the 43??? number, it's just in the middle of a load of other numbers !! 😉

Never expected to phot a pair of back-to-back power cars, on a rake of Scotrail mk3's, on a hand-worked level crossing, passing a gaslamp !!

43 194 approaching Devonport on 2M77 ex Penzance at 1915 to Bristol. Sorry about the quality, I only just managed to get the phone out of my pocket in time, after hearing a toot as it probably entered the tunnel.

…there’s also this one, starring a younger MrTea (in the blue anorak):

I remember the work-worn state of 125s after they’d been in service for a few years.

Apologies if these have already been posted.

I have also seen a few videos of 43s amongst other traffic. Anyway, the photos are finds rather than my own work.

Been a massive HST fan since travelling on the first on in 1978 aged 12 and so saddened they are getting finally culled before the end of this year. England at least.

Watched the evolution of them over the years and was fortunate enough to end up weekly commuting between the north and kings cross when the hybrid sets came in.

Would love to see an XPT brought to this country to be preserved alongside our own HST.  Would be an interesting project to get off the ground if there was enough interest.

As a modeller I picked up both a Hornby XPT and Lima XPT during lockdown.

I'm intrigued by this thing someone else published was on eBay.

Did anything ever exist like it?
