A video clip is available here.

This was an empty coaching stock working as 5Z42 from Crewe Holding Sidings to Neville Hill Traction & Rolling Stock Maintenance Depot, and was a positioning move as the set is scheduled to operate the West Highland Pullman rail tour on 26th July 2023 from Darlington to Oban.

Now on that IC power car there's an example of prototype for everything, "when your masking leaves a little to be desired......"

The original livery application is much more pleasing.

In slightly sunnier conditions a friend of mine got an even more clear photo of the paint job today at BTM...well I assume its the paint job and not the body shell......

Saturday 1st October 1977.

Photographed from the 'Torbay Express' railtour, HST set 253 020 which on this date was formed 43040, 42062/60, 40020, 42061, 40520, 41041/42, 43041, sits on platform 12 at Bristol Temple Meads having just worked the 09.20 Paddington service. Despite being only 10 months old at this point, the power car shows heavy paint flaking, which made it instantly identifiable at the time. Now 46 years later, after mainy different coats of paint and with several million miles under its belt, 43040 has been stood down. I wonder if the lads looking on are among us, the driver and the guard from the train opposite are I suspect, long gone. How time flies by.

My purchased Kodachrome transparency, with rights to share.

An old APS camera pic from 2003 (20 years ago!!) when project Rio was in full swing while the WCML was being upgraded, at the time as a new driver with no route and very little area knowledge east of Manchester the thought of a train leaving Manchester and heading over the Pennines toward Sheffield and south from there seemed absolutely crazy and in my head would have taken hours but all there years down the line and signing Manchester to Sheffield and down to Leicester I realise it’s actually not that far, (even shorter if chinley to ambergate via Matlock was still open!)
