A while ago I posted a couple of Bob Faulkner's shots of a pair of 27s at Blisworth in the '60s, here's another showing D5412 and D5388....

Didn't realise they made it that far up the WCML. Did they ever reach Bletchley, or points further south (on the WCML)?

I've heard anecdotal evidence of it happening occasionally from old hand Drivers etc, remember that a batch were allocated to Cricklewood up to about 1970, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that they came onto the WCML and I've seen photos of them in Willesden Brent Yard.

27s on the Kyle line were rare, this is a beauty shared from Facebook with permission from photographer Alan Conway.  26 034  running round at Kyle of Lochalsh on 9th September 1980 having arrived with 27 109 on the first train of the day from Dingwall.  Note that the track beyond  the release crossover only allows one loco at a time.

Always thought drivers had to be keen on the brakes at Kyle......

Thanks. I'd love to see photographic evidence of a 27 at BY!

On a related note, I'm sure I've seen a photo of a class 27 on the GC at Leicester Central, or somewhere near, in about 1966/7, prior to final closure. Can't find the photo now, I've tried Flickr to no avail. Can anyone help please?

Edit:- found it (the 27 at Leics C), @w124bob posted it on Monday, at the top of this page.

Must go to Barnard Castle .....

That could also sit nicely in the "When the real thing looks like a model" thread.

I did a lot of work on this loco when it was based on the North Norfolk in the 90s. It had serious body rot but is now owned by Harry Needle and is going mainline eventually

Just one end (the B-end) for a few months in 1983, sorted out at the next Works visit in November.

I'd never equate class 27's with Underground stock & 4th rail. Who'd have thunk it!

It's certainly something of a shock, and that to someone familar with seeing a rat at Neasden South Jn in later times. Not so far from the Cricklewood - Acton line, so perhaps it wasn't quite as unusual as all that. I do wonder what the trip working was though - possibly a Croxley tip, or maybe a works delivery to an LT depot?

On the fast lines so technically a GC working.

So that gets me thinking, how far along the GC did class 27's roam? I've seen photos of them in Leicester Central-did they ever work along the length of the extension, through Rugby, Brackley etc? Did they work through Nottingham Vic? How far north would they have gone?

Almost all of D5371 onwards spent time based at Cricklewood, Leicester and the Nottingham Division (some were allocated to Bedford early on), all based on BR database info and prior to their mass transfer to Scotland at the end of the 60s. They appeared anywhere on the ‘Midland Lines’ or workings to/from them - so Midland Main Line in particular.

From observation in the Birmingham area they were a daily feature on the Derby/Leicester/Saltley and sometimes southwards towards Gloucester, though not as ubiquitous as classes 24/25.

Presumably they would have reached Bletchley via the Bedford/Bletchley line.

There was also a large batch (around 20?) of class 25 allocated concurrently to Cricklewood in the 60s in the D521x-D522x series. These, along with the class 27s allocated there tended to operate at the southern end of the Midland and other LMR lines - as shown by gaps in underlining in my Combined Volumes prior to that area being visited in the later 60s!!

Wow, a 27 on the SR, on what appears to be a bona fide passenger train. Next question-what was the furthest south a 27 worked prior to preservation? Did any make it to the south coast on scheduled freight/passenger services?

Edit-since class 33's were starting to appear at that time, did a 27/33 lash up happen?
