KeithMacdonald
Good news for any modelling anywhere on the Princetown branch? In the latest Rapido newsletter: Quote Our new '44XX' will be perfect for layouts inspired by the Princetown Railway, that twisting, climbing branch line that penetrated deepest, darkest Dartmoor. '44XXs' were prime motive power on the branch from 1905 until October 1954. No. 4403 shunts at Princetown in the 1920s. https://rapidotrains.co.uk/gwr-small-prairie/ Would their B-Set be appropriate as well? https://rapidotrains.co.uk/gwr-b-set-coaches/ But which era? GWR https://rapidotrains.co.uk/product/dia-e140-b-set-gwr-shirtbutton-livery/ or BR https://rapidotrains.co.uk/product/dia-e140-b-set-br-crimson/

I’m sure if I hadn't made one already an rtr one wouldn’t have appeared so soon. I will of course be having one. Now, I must finish that Gibson E4 kit. 😊
RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted November 27, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 27, 2022 Ah yes ! A ready to run E4 would be just splendid. Who knows........ Rob. 2

RMweb Gold The Fatadder Posted November 27, 2022 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 27, 2022 An accurate E140 Is huge news for me, such an important coach for most branchlines in the south west, and the ex Airfix model is pretty terrible.
MrWolf
The problem with the ex Airfix model of the B set is that it's from nearly fifty years ago. In comparison with what was available at the time for GWR coaches, it was like those launched the other day. It does, with a lot of work, scrub up well, but all the same, I'm trying to work out if I can buy the latest ones asap. 2

I did start trying to fix them but never managed to get to the end of one side (yet alone two coaches worth). The other issues like the curved buffer beam, battery box location and additional window were a lot easier fixes. For me it is that error with the handrails that I just cant see past on the Airfix model, and this is going to save me a lot of work / time drawing up and etching a replacement side for mine.
MrWolf
There is, as you say a lot of work involved, much of which can be achieved with bits of plasticard, ( Steps, blanking out the extra window by the guard's door etc.) The buffer beams were surplus items culled from wagon chassis kits, buffers, dynamo etc were bought in. Those ribs around the handles were pared off with a tiny marquetry chisel, not pleasant, but not as fiddly as the grab rails by the door, although they were just bent up like staples. It was the lining which defeated me and they never got finished, despite being quite pleased with the rest of the work. That was over twenty years ago now. I've got a couple of as new but whether I CBA to do all that work again, I couldn't say! The only factor is that the price of the new issue is a hell of a lot of money to me at the moment and those NOS Airfix relics are barely worth a tenner apiece so who knows? Popular Post wiggoforgold
Currently testing (playing with) this, a DJM 14xx, kindly loaned by NHY581. The story of it’s weathering can be found in his thread. 33 1
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted March 28, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 28, 2023 Looks good on Yelverton, Alex. How does it's mechanism like the Cornish air? Does it run OK now? 1

Does it run OK now? So far so good. I was aware of the running issues, which is why I hadn’t bought one, but I reasoned that all it has to do on Yelverton is run up and down a straight piece of track and stop in the station. So far it seems up to that. 1
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted March 28, 2023 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 28, 2023 Well, best of luck with it. You know my opinion on the design of this mechanism! btw, is that the one that Rob cleaned most of the factory weathering off? It looks really good.

MrWolf
I remember that and at the time thinking that removing much of the weathering now has it looking so like one of those old colour photos from about 1960.
