brian daniels
Now added the orange electric conduit down the side on the chassis and the other larger pipe above the tanks. Put the pipes on the end to see what the end looks like with all the clutter there. Started doing the filling now as well.
brian daniels
Another project that's been on the back burner for a while is the 06 as I have been waiting for the worksplates from Diane Carney. I now have these so can get round to cutting them out and painting them then a bit of weathering. The lettering on them is not 100% but they are the only ones you can get and they do look the part which is the main thing.
brian daniels
Another project on the go at the moment is a Heljan 47 that I have decided to do as 47307 complete with sandboxes! Only trouble is no one does a 47 sandbox so I have used JLTRT 20 boxes. They are not quite deep enough but they will have to do. The etched steps are from Pete Harvey of this parish and very nice they are too. The handrail on the front is too flat a profile so needs lifting up in the centre but doing this I will have to remove the 2 blocks that it sits on. After doing this the yellow would need repainting which I am tempted to do anyway as the finish on the model is a bit dull, a bit like IM locos really that always had a faded look to them. Will have to make a blanking plate for the boiler exhaust as well. Forgot to say one thing I have done is mill away behind the lifeguards on the end of the bogies. Looks a bit better now it's thinner. Hopefully come up nice when it's weathered.
Rugd1022
Great work Brian, it always amazes me just how much stuff you manage to get done, the 27 looks so characterful already, can't wait to see it painted. Love the Oleos on the Big Bad Brush B)... where are they from? Nidge
brian daniels
Hi Nidge You too would have time for modelling if you weren't running around learning/conducting those fast passenger trains:P I have got my feet up modelling, carry on boys:lol: The oleo's are some spares from JLTRT although I only have 2 at the moment. 27 does look spot on doesn't it. HealeyMills
Hi Brian, The 27 looks fabulous and the pace and accuracy with which you work is amazing. The JLTRT kits really are excellent and seem to beckon to me the more and more I see them! Cheers Lee PS - I sent you a PM regarding your question on Ressaldo's JLTRT Class 40 thread
brian daniels
Getting there slowly. Painted the sandboxes and steps today. Also painted the yellow end with Railmatch yellow which looks a bit better, and also did the piller on the glazing which is unpainted on the model. One problem though doing the yellow was a bit of the runs with the white primer under the masking tape! Touched up with blue again but it ain't good. Painted the airpipe taps as well. Just the boiler blanking plate to do then weather it. I also ordered some data panals from Precision labels for a 47 with KY depot stickers. Don't know if anyone has noticed but the model has different windy wipers at each end! I am doing a swap with a friend who has a green un so he needs a set of pantograph ones where as I need a set of straight ones. 06 worksplates are painted as well just got to stick them on.
richard carr
Brian Those improvements certainly work well, especially the steps. I was wondering if you were going to thin the fuel tanks etc as these are too wide in my opinion, I did on mine. The 27 looks really good too, the JLTRT models just seem to get better and better. Richard.
brian daniels
I have been thinking about thinning the tanks Richard but am a bit stumped what to do. Those 4 cast supports are a bit close to the sides aren't they. What did you do?
richard carr
Brian This is what I did. I took off the side mouldings and filed away where the cast posts go so that the mouldings would then sit inside the body width. I binned the centre section and made a new one from 1mm plastic card. I then glued everything in place with either butanone or super glue. Once it was all put back together and suitably weathered it looks good. I will post some pictures of it this weekend once I get back home. Richard.
brian daniels
Thanks Richard. That's the solution I was thinking about but just thinking about it is as far as it's got! I have just made a Hawker Siddely speedo drive for one bogie and removed the speedo drive on the other bogie. I will have do the tank mod though. Stick some pics of yours here please. By the way the 27/2 body is in primer.
richard carr
Brian Here are some pictures of 47416 with thinned fuel tanks and D1942 unconverted, I think you can get a clear idea from this one of where the thiner centre section is. The big holes were in case I put a speaker in there but I didn't so they are not necessary. This gives a close up of the thinned tanks , its not much about 1mm but enough to make a difference. The there are two shots from the same angle of the modified one and then an unmodified.
brian daniels
Thanks for the pics Richard. I did get and do mine by cutting a bit out of the middle which moved the sides in by about the same amount as you have done. I can't wait to get a bit of weathering on mine as it brings up the underframe a treat on yours.
RMweb Premium boxbrownie Posted October 8, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 8, 2010 Just how much too wide are the fuel tanks chaps? Is it that noticable when finished? I ask because the speaker I am fitting in my 47 is a nice "snug" fit in the tank internals....which means I would have to trim down the speaker frame as well.....urgh....dodgy business that! richard carr
Just how much you should take exactly I don't know, but looking at photographs the tanks sit noticeably inside the the body width, not at the edge of it, which is what the model has. Its hard to take much more than 1mm from each side because the metal part of the chassis gets inthe way but its enough for it to look like the tanks are now well inside the body width. You don't need to put the speaker int eh tanks it fits nicely between the motor and the circuit board, thats where mine is positioned. brian daniels
Well I have finally got my 47 back together so I have now taken a picture to show the "slightly" narrowed tanks. Make your mind up wether it's worth it. i also milled a bit away from the back of the life guards which makes a big improvement when it's going round corners. I pulled the tail light wires out as well whilst had it apart so they are not on with a train behind. I also cut a couple of the uprights out of the headcode box as they got in the way of the light on the domino's by casting a shadow on them. I also went over the back of the headcode paper with a black felt to darken it more, leaving the dots white though.
brian daniels
I have been quite busy recently finishing off projects mainly. I have finished the 06 at last and finished the paint job on the 27/2. I have put the mu and eth cables on one end only at the moment. Also weathered the JLTRT TTA. I have ordered 2 more with the shorter walkway to go with this one. I have been sorting out my brake vans as well in the last couple of weeks. I did not relise I had 5 of them! I have a toad in grey, midland in bauxite, LNER standard in olive, and 2 BR standard ones. On one of my BR vans I have put working lights on which show red to the rear and yellow to the front. I did this by using a yellow and red small led and soldered them in series and folded them back to back. One terminal is rubbing on the lamp inside which is soldered to the van, being an ABS white metal model. The other terminal is soldered to insulated armature wire and fed to a battery inside. I might still play around with the weathering on these models a bit more.

coachmann
The weathering on that Class 06 is spot on. These 7mm scale locomotives are really impressive with all the fine detail.
jbg06003
Brian, that Barclay pug is simply outstanding and the 27/2 looks like it will match it. Great work. Bruce
brian daniels
Forgot to say I have also re-painted an RJH diesel brake tender that I built years ago. I also have 3 Skytrex HAA's that I have given a basic spray over.
Softvark
I love the rust under the window of the 06 - what technique did you use to do that? Julian
brian daniels
Hi Julian, sorry about the delay in replying, forgot all about your question old age you know! I used Railmatch dark rust, a little on the end of a brush and used downward strokes from the bottom of the windows.
brian daniels
I have just recieved some etched bits I asked a friend to do for me. I have done a larger window frame to do a token recessed window on a 20, will just need to cut the token hole out under it when I get a kit. Also got some brake discs done for my Warflats. You have to break them in 2 and put half on at a time as the wagons are built up now. Also got a representation of the worksplates and a wagon label clip done. Just painting these now so should have them on soon then I can weather them at last. I am busy building another MMP 35 ton "B" tank although the longer barrel "A" tank version at the moment.
