I agree - some things are very obvious when they go off, such as milk, wheras others (e.g. raw fish) I'd be more concerned. Generally I pay much more attention to "use by" than to "best before", and none whatsoever to "sell by"

We had a tin of peaches the other day that were two years past their "best before", but still perfectly fine. Conversely a pack of fresh oranges went mouldy, still within their "sell by"

Sell by is simply for the companies stock rotation, best before is more to do with optimum quality, use by as you say pay attention to especially with some high risk items

It is against the law to sell items (fruit and veg) past their use by dates, but on loose products providing the date on the box/crate is in date the quality of items can be substandard

That seems quite sensible to me - there's no point trying to teach people anything complicated if they can't manage the basics.

Most general cook-books start with things like boiling eggs; whilst it seems 'common-sense', the egg may be cooked for different times for use in other recipes, be it a Salade Nicoise or a Scotch Egg.

Yet its what my mother (still going strong at 99) taught me (with other basic cookery) before I ventured out into the big bad world.

A possibility has just struck me: that the first symptom that a person has contracted the virus is that they exhibit an irrational and uncontrollable need to accumulate toilet rolls.

Did people ever suck eggs? And, if so, why?

Yes, in the days before NHS dentistry and many old people being toothless, making sucking the contents of an egg the easiest thing for them to eat.

I recall that my weekly university magazine often published recipes for instant coffee and beans on toast! And that was back in the 70s

It appeared in our Fresher's Rag every year along with other delights such as The Geography of the Human Female ;)

Did she also tell you how to suck eggs, or was it vice versa?

Mike.

You mean people also need to be taught that? Don't parents teach their children anything these days?

Sorry if you’ve heard this one before but I like it,

The reason people are panic buying toilet rolls is because one person coughs and ten more sh!t themselves!

Even without teeth, scrambled, poached or omelette would seem preferable.

Didn't Delia Smith (or one of those cookery writers) include how to boil an egg in one of her books?

The year that Delia's How to cook book came out some of the well known tv cooks were scornful of it. Then it outsold all their cookbooks combined.

Delia' recipe for success was to help people make food they might want to eat using stuff you could buy in a normal shop and without suffering stress or anxiety. As opposed to certain other celebrity cooks who provide food porn for foodies. I think the audiences are probably completely different.

Oi!  Are you still allowed to ask questions like that?

Yes.  Collectors of birds' eggs did.  That's why the eggs in old collections often have a visible hole at each end: one for outgoing contents and one for incoming air.

Weren’t birds’ eggs blown, rather than sucked? For some long-forgotten reason, I tried blowing an egg when I was a boy (lifted from the kitchen, not a rare bird’s nest), and it was surprisingly difficult.

Either, apparently, but always referred to as "blown".  I have no idea why.  All I know is that the old boy who once demonstrated the art to a group of us kids made it look so easy, which I very much doubt it actually is.

It's really starting to get to me now that I can't remember what he used to make the holes without cracking the shell ...

But in extremis, you can always use the book as a fire under your saucepan (well. it must have some use)..........
