Aston On Clun. A forgotten Great Western outpost.

This really was a case of waiting for paint to dry.

It's surprising how long it can take to complete the little details. I could have just painted the box red and the post brown. But that's not we're about around here.

The post was treated the same as the telegraph poles and the box had its collection time sign painted cream and the letter slot black before the coat of red was applied to the box and U bolts.

Now I can see where the paint needs tidying up too!

Need to get the stencils out and get those collection times on there. Don't forget to say where the last post goes from as well. Don't want complaints that they've missed that do we.

I thought that I might cheat, find an original, have it scanned, reduced and printed off on a material that looks like enamel.

Probably should have hollowed out the box and made the door open too. :D

Nah, only P4 post boxes are like that, as any fule kno.....

It was a good little show. The club had their huge O gauge layout on show and there was a fair  mixed selection of other layouts. I don't generally go to many shows due to the preponderance of modern image main line layouts which aren't really my thing. Often they're crammed with figures, lights and shiny road vehicles, although I'm impressed with the amount of work and skill that goes into the rest of the layout.

I generally go to pick up odds and ends and see the models set pre 1975, because I'm interested in the railways as they were before my time.

I take it that you have several churches or chapels to take services for and don't get much time off?

Strictly speaking, to use the correct Welsh, one simply says 'Tidy'.

That would be a flock and they have flocked off to Hopesay where the grass is apparently greener, although the road is very narrow and they have to watch out for lunatics on old motorcycles with no brakes.

Technically I don't have any as I am retired from fulltime ministry but as 3 multi-church benefices around here are without clergy at the moment we "retireds" get roped-in to fill-in plus we provide cover for holidays and sickness.

I couldn't agree more. I know the shows aim to cater for all tastes and ages. But I usually find there very few layouts that I spend much time looking at.

Pick and choose. The specialist scale shows - ExpoEM and Scaleforum - and the better class of club show such as Railex, Basingstoke, and Uckfield (to name some in striking distance from here) never fail to provide interest. Even our local club shows have something worthwhile, in proportion to the couple of miles journey.

I have often spent more time at shows chatting to friends than looking at layouts.

Nice work on the post box. The little slot for the next collection tag may be missing but at least that saves you changing it daily

Yes, that's one of Awdry's lesser known characters, Sloshey....

Sloshey, Pintey and Dram. They make a very awkward train late on a Friday night. And do not couple them up to Bolshy the Brake Van.

Further back there was much concern for the well-being of Experimental Sheep 1-36.

I can tell you now that they are all alive and well and seem to be amassing on the Welsh borders. They're being stirred up by the little fella at the front who goes by the name of Ewetin....

I did a little bit of hunting around for images of the post mounted rural style letterbox. The next collection tag doesn't appear on any of them and there's no holder for it on the door.

I dont need the research I spent a few years changing them 6 days a week along the Wenlock edge. The two within a short walk of us now both post mounted have them.

The second photo above shows a holder for the tag in the corner which would  be changed. But many had a small slot above .At one time it was changed for each collection now they usually just show the day.

Now it may be that in some areas there are boxes like the top photo with no tag.

Thanks @Donw, the more information the better, every day being a school day and all that. I was looking for the separate collection tag, as I wasn't too worried about the main information panel, leaving it a grubby white rather than trying to replicate the lettering.

The rough a**ed paint job on the top picture makes me feel better about my own effort! :dancer:
