This sounds truly horrible, but the result is so worthwhile. As Charmian, Cleopatra's handmaiden put it  "I love long life better than figs!" as do most of us.

ISTR from previous RMwebs that you live somewhere near Tunbridge Wells, or perhaps that is just the Wilde connection. Wherever, I hope you are soon able to return there and enjoy the comforts of home while completing your recovery.

I hope you make a full recovery. I had a defective valve exchanged in January 2000; I had my op at the beginning of the week, and was discharged the following weekend, though I was as weak as a kitten for some time afterwards.

Some of the drugs they give you post-operation have strange side-effects, including hallucinations; these will disappear in a few weeks. The pain in the chest will take longer to go away; make sure you've cough-suppressant pastilles to hand at all times, as coughing is really painful.

The final word goes to my cardiologist:-

'What's the difference between God and a heart specialist?'

'God doesn't think he's a cardiologist....'

On a more practical note the drains were a massive source of pain post op and only when they were removed did I feel that I could relax. I also recommend the cardio rehab I felt so much better that I overdid it plonker that I am and put myself back in hospital for two days.
