3D Printing - Anglesey Aluminium PAB Petcoke wagons

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Nice models and great work!

stenson models make the suspension castings too as a replacement for the Lima PCA but the stenson ones give sprung axles. I found that some of the shapeways prints can be distorted slightly and tend to replace the suspension with theirs.

for finishing 3D prints I’ve used Mr Surfacer 500 to take away some of the graininess.

looking forward to seeing the final result!

Thanks for the kind words! And for the advice on finishing too, which I will definitely look into!

Many thanks!

So an update, the third print will arrive tomorrow, and depending on how the chassis have come out, it'll be the first complete wagon, and will become 12102.

I have been in contact with Railtec to create me some transfers, so hopefully will come up trumps.

This print will be painted up regardless, using Revell No; 9.

I decided to paint the wagon by hand last night, without treating the print with any filler, and I'm very happy with the result.

Painted in Revell No9 'Anthracite'. I used this colour as opposed to black, after watching 'Wallsrail' on YouTube, who refers to it as 'not black'. I've used it as he says, and I totally agree, black is too harsh a colour on a model.

Ive fitted the wagon with Accurascale's excellent Oleo OP12 buffers with 16" heads.

So for me, design work is done, and this wagon will now  become 12106.

In the next 'batch' I will modify one, to include a flashing tail lamp. This will involve cutting off the bottom of the rearmost chute and hiding the gizmos inside.

Now to print the other 16....

Almost a month since last update! Don't worry, the project is still very much a go.

These PABs seem to be multiplying!

Had a further 4 waiting for me when I got home from work, and didn't hesitate in getting stuck in. Got an extra chassis this time around too, so decided to combine it with the body from the second test print to create a 6th. Result!

One has also begun the process of having it's flashing tail lamp fitted, which I hope to continue working on tomorrow.

Excellent work. I am impressed with the results. Can I ask who you are using to print your work, and with what material?

Thanks T0ny.

I'm using 3D People to print these, using Multi Jet Fusion, which I believe uses a type of nylon.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I shall investigate further when I get my efforts further developed.

Keep up the excellent work. All the best.

Tony

No problem! Another benefit of using MJF is there is no support structure, so less clean-up.

I was just looking at their site. I see that they say that the embossed detail needs to be a minimum of 1mm. I am looking at somewhere around 0.3mm (1" in 4mm), so I might need to investigate further.

However, the products you have shown us are of excellent quality.

I am still learning how to use Fusion 360 to produce a model of a chaldron waggon. We shall see how that goes.

Thanks for your response.

Tony

Added detailing to the end of the wagon that will be on the rear of the rake.

Buffers and instanter couplings are Accurascale, the brake pipe is from the spares box, and tail lamp is a DCC Concepts lamp and Traintech gubbins.

So a few weeks ago, I approached Steve @railtec-models for some custom transfers for these PAB wagons, and as always is the case, he's come up trumps!

https://www.railtec-models.com/showitem.php?id=8119

Three packs in total, covering all 17 PABs between them. He's even replicated the different number fonts on each wagon, which is absolutely superb.

Once these arrive, I will get the 6 I have built up decked out with these transfers, which I can't wait to do!

Alls that left to do now is the get the remaining 11 wagons printed, built and painted ready for these transfers!

Yet another set of 5 arrived today, and managed to fit out the chassis with bearings and suspension units and paint the hopper bodies.

The note pad has all my notes from the project, including rough drawings and dimensions.

I've also got on it a list showing variations and a list to keep track on which wagons I've painted, built and completed.

Transfers from @railtec-models arrived this morning, so i got stuck into the job at hand!

12106 (left) is at a more advanced stage than 12114, but will hopefully be done tonight!

Planning on doing the 7 complete wagons first, then work on the 4 that are still WIP.

The WIP 4 are awaiting the arrival of a spray can of Revell Anthracite to paint the chassis, then it's assembly and gloss ready for transfers.

It was briefly back to the CAD tonight, where I completed the final part of the wagons, being the hopper discharge doors.

Two of these will fit onto the bottom of each wagon, completing the look of the wagons. I've ordered enough for all 17 wagons, which should arrive about a week after the remaining 6 wagons.

Following some changes to the CAD, the hopper discharge doors arrived today.

Before fitting. Some of the hoppers required the bottom edge filed slightly to get these to fit. Others popped in beautifully.

A look before they were painted.

And after paint. They finish off each wagon well, instead of there being gaping holes at the bottom of each hopper.

Also, this evening I had an impromptu airbrush session, firstly to gloss varnish the last 6 PABs ready for transfers, then to matt varnish the 11 complete vehicles. I then proceeded to get on with another project for Jack.

Ive decided to replace the 3D printed ladders with etched stainless steel versions...

Before:

After:

It's a vast improvement from the previous chunky ladders. I will replace the rest in due course.

Looking at those I think you should investigate getting your own printer.

Would be roughly a pound (50p to £2) each in resin.

That's the plan in due course, once I get round to it.

Hoping to create more CADs soon, which will make it more worthwhile to get my own resin machine. I do have an FDM printer, but I've never got on with it.
