31412 at Birmingham New Street Station - Tuesday 27th May 1986.  An excellent shot by David Malt and shared here with his permission 😎

That looks a bit unusual, a 31 right at the north end of platform 11 implying a longer train than an E.Anglia to BNS service (plus they were normally on lower platform numbers). Wouldn't have thought a 31 and Mk1s would have been on a service to the SW in '86 - are there any notes with the pic to give any more info? Not that I was around BNS much in those years.

31412 was allocated to OC from 1972 to 1988. The RailGenArchive has it operating 1V21 1400 York - Plymouth Relief on that day, Tuesday 27 May 1986.

Nothing more than a reference to RailGenArchive as quoted above, unfortunately.  Judging from the exhaust and position the train is actually departing rather than just parked, however, so 1V21 York - Plymouth certainly fits.

Or you might prefer a diesel...  A tatty 50004 stands after arrival with the 0755 from Paddington, on 13th March 1978.

No wonder the Western Region claimed that they were no good!

Note the British Rail Utility Trolley being used by a couple of spotters.  If left unattended for long, these handy things would sometimes be used by BR staff for moving parcels and mail around the place.  The cheek of some folk...

It did happen occasionally,  I had a 31, 121 I think, Bristol TM - New St in July 1985.
