RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted June 3, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 3, 2021 And so to the last train of the day. Our photographer is geting a bit tired, after all he has been here since 7.15am, and even his magic camera is struggling with the light. He has also entered a time warp, as this photo must have been taken several months later. Someone has been brave in sending this so far from home on the 7.21 KX stopper. It has managed to get here without failing though.

Coming to you from Grantham station platform... Well, yes, but.... I had a spell of buying GN section locos from when I was a teenager so I could ring the changes from the 30's. This is my "go-to" loco when I need to run a track-cleaner; heavy, powerful and a good runner. Shame about the prototype!

This loco was used for a little known trial using a Danish company, in place of the Deltic engine they used a 5 pole electric motor, powered through the track circuits no less!!. It was extremely reliable and quiet, hence it could reach Peterborough with ease, but had to be abandoned due to the number of track workers who unwittingly got electrocuted whilst doing gauge tests. 1

RMweb Premium Popular Post great northern Posted June 3, 2021 Author RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted June 3, 2021 As you already know Red Leader duly touched down, one minute late, but that wasn't his fault, and after a mug of tea, we were able to agree on a course of action. Graham agreed with my view that goods traffic would only have used the island platform outer loop road in dire emergencies, so there seemed no point in motorising the two arms governing access to the yards. The fact that I can't remember using them in all the ten years of the layout reinforced that view. The distant is fixed, and so there remained only one arm to be dealt with, and that was done by lunchtime. The other signal was more problematic, as there are four Tortoises crammed into one of those small cells. My view was that I would be quite happy if the Home and Distant arms for the main were operational, and that if, and again operationally it would have been rare, goods traffic into the yards was allowed through on the main, I would operate the necessary arms manually. 99% of the time there would only be me there to see this iniquitous practice. However, the two main arms co-operated quite well, and so there was time to also motorise one of the New England arms. All in all, a very good result, and a very pleasant day in Graham's company. The signals, of course, look excellent, and are a great improvement on what was there before. Graham brought the lovely little D2 for me to admire, which I did, and I am sorely tempted. Well, I'm not, but I think Sir Archibald Loco-holic may be. Anyway, some pictures, taken as the sun was moving behind houses, and the light was fading, but they give a reasonable idea. All three of Graham's signals in view here, though one only partially. It isn't possible to get both of the new ones in unobstructed from this angle. This one concentrates on the bracket governing Platform 6 line. and then the one governing the Down Main. From this angle we can get an unobstructed view of both. and we finish with a closer view of the Main. Another enhancement of the layout is complete. 27 5
RMweb Gold Market65 Posted June 3, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 3, 2021 Well, Gilbert, those signals are superb and really help to improve that area of the layout. I will be good seeing the first train to be signalled through by those signals. So well done. Best regards, Rob. 1

LNER4479
10 hours ago, 31A said: The "Plant Centenarian"? Well nearly ..... !! Actually, the D2 + C1 phoro was rather more inspired by a 1938 picture at that location of just such a pairing being rustled up at no notice to replace a poorly A4 at Peterborough on the up Silver Jubilee. As Gilbert didn't have the 1938 Silver Jubilee set to hand, a three compartment Gresley BTK had to suffice. Not quite sure what the thinking was in providing the D2 as pilot - probably more of a hindrance than a help as a C1 in good nick with a willing crew would surely have been perfectly adequate? Anyhow, as the caption to the photo remarked, it gave the D2 concerned its 'moment in the sun'.
2750Papyrus
Those signals look superb and really add to the atmosphere. Love the D2/C1 combination, too; I've always had a soft spot for the GN 4-4-0s. 3
