bluebottle
shovel A while back you grumbled, Peter, that: “For some reason I get more "likes" for a snap of a bit of rail, than I do for what I consider are "better" pictures ...” Well, this is another unconsidered trifle that you've elevated to art. The “word of the day” in the OED online the other day was “Rhopography”, defined as “(Chiefly in painting): a depiction of subject matter considered insignificant or trivial, as still life, the domestic interior, animals etc.” I think that this is what we have here. Inanimate objects, sure, but a shovel is merely an extension of a man's arm and hand, waiting to be reanimated by that arm. We have satisfying textures in the weathered steel plates and the tumbled coals, and the angled lines and planes focus attention on our shovel. That's an attempt to put into words what's really a subconscious response to the picture.
Smiffy2
All that, plus, I think, that this really captures the fundamentals of a steam locomotive, coal, a shovel and by inference muscles and sweat. Worked for me on many levels. I think it may have been even better in grainy black and white.

Peter Kazmierczak
Thanks for the comments about "Shovel", though as an LMS follower I suppose I should've called it Shovell. Anyway, something not quite so creative, but I quite like the lighting - Bournemouth station early this morning with an up Class 444. Hard to believe this is November.
