We arrived in good time, about 20 minutes early, but the traffic was a lot busier than I’d have expected, so it was probably a good job we left home when we did. I stayed with her until she’d seen all the doctors who will be in the theatre, some of them didn’t look old enough to be doctors! I got back home just after 10 o’clock and went straight upstairs to get changed, I’ve been busy ever since. I did get a text from Sheila, just before noon, saying she was in her way to the theatre, she also mentioned that she was wearing some over the knee black stockings and that she resembled a geriatric extra form a St. Trinians film! I’m now just waiting to hear from her to let me know how she’s got on. Brian, I very much hope all has gone well. David 1 19
Popular Post Ian Abel
Happy New Year to all... AWOL given I've spent 6 days with a virus, supposedly one of many doing the rounds, so since the afternoon of Christmas day I've not been much use to anyone until yesterday! As a result there really isn't much to report - even the Urgent Care folks (Mrs insisted I go see if they had any "insights") having tested me for seemingly everything, except Black Plague and Yellow fever as they apparently are pretty obvious 😀, it's just a virus, go home, stay comfortable, take Tylenol and remain hydrated - BAH HUMBUG. On the mend since yesterday, fortunate since that was our "family Christmas" celebration, and I even felt better still today and attended my 6-month dental appointment. Weather turning towards Minnesota winter slowly, we got 2 inches of snow on Saturday and highs hovering between +1c and -1c. Partly sunny. Onward to 2024, in all haste. RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted January 2 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 2 (edited) Evenin' each, It's been wet and very windy here in the Land of Sutt. There was a huge crash in the side alley as our bins went over a little while ago but by the time I got there my mate Russ next door was already out and putting things to rights. Apparently there was an even bigger crash in Sutton High Street this afternoon when some scaffolding collapsed. Luckily nobody was hurt: https://www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/news/24023718.storm-henk-rips-scaffolding-off-sutton-high-street-building/ Scroll down a bit for video. Warning: There's a bit of swearing if you are easily offended. Bangers & mash tonight with a glass or two of Malbec. Things could be worse. RMweb Premium PhilJ W Posted January 2 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 2 Evening all from Estuary-Land. Done my bit of shopping, you can't avoid horizontal rain, fortunately the rain is easing and according to the seaweed wranglers its going to be dry but cold towards the end of the week. Arthur Itis doesn't like the dry and cold so hopefully he'll stay away.

Ah, what a sterling surname #cough# Well another day of hospickle appointments and insultations, with some results for Mrs NHN which thankfully discounted the worst case scenario that had appeared to be the most likely case - which would not have been nice. As it is, some other confirmation tests yet to do but something treatable and deal-able with appears to be the case. The sound of de-escalating stress can be heard over the six sheadings of Fraggle Rock. Middle age stinks, but the alternative involves not waking up of a morning, which is much more smelly. So to celebrate? #sigh# it was more shopping.....furniture. Many Deltics.
RMweb Premium Popular Post TheQ Posted January 2 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 2 Evening Awl Not sure if we drifting away from Fraggle rock, but it feels like we should be. 17:00, breezy 18:00 windy, 19:00 kin ell. Driving to the MRC it was big across the road puddles, Lumpy gas at the MRC lights flickering on an off occasionally. Driving from the MRC it was, where's the road gone?. First road on leaving the MRC, end of diversion signs, Second road, in the opposite direction to what I needed. Blue and red flashing lights not going anywhere. Lots of branches down on the roads, brambles hanging out at horizontal 6 to 8 ft into the road at Landrover windscreen height. Got home spotted Ben's outside water bowl half way down the garden. The garden nearest the house is up to 6 inches deep in water, it just can't flow out of the gate and down the road fast enough. In the 25 years we've been here this is definitely the most accumulated soggyness we've had. Modified a shed , painted a gate, and a couple of houses, discovered some bits I'd painted Friday were still tacky. (Humbrol enamel) Other than that it's been a good night. Muggachoccy gone with accompanying pink pills, Goodnight Awl. 6
Popular Post Ohmisterporter
Bit late but happy new year to all. News here is that Kath is home from hospital; several CT scans and MRI scans still have not determined definitely what was wrong so she is now looking forward (not) to a lumbar puncture next week. A stroke has been ruled out now; it was a seizure of some sort though the cause is being investigated. That leaves me as chief cook for the time being so it is beans on toast three times a day. I jest. It's Hoops. Stay safe all.
RMweb Premium Popular Post BSW01 Posted January 2 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 2 (edited) Good evening everyone Sheila would like to say thank you all for the good wishes, she very much appreciates this. I spoke to her this evening, as she wasn’t well enough for visitors, as she was still very tired. She’s already had some tests since going back to the ward and she’s due some more tomorrow morning. Once again, we’ll have to speak via phone in the morning, as I’ve got an appointment at the Christie at 9:30 tomorrow morning. So, I’m once again having an early night. He tore Okehampton station apart in one mighty blast. Footbridge and canopies - gone. Some of their mortal remains were dumped onto the track whereupon there was no train because it had struck a fallen tree back down the line and was disabled. Henk ripped through here this morning with a whining and moaning I have seldom heard. Not since the Great Storm of 1987 during which the roof of the house opposite landed in the street among other significant damage to the area I was then living in. London E12. And this morning, unlike that October morning, I felt under no obligation to go anywhere let alone make my way into work. I walked through the teeth of the 1987 storm with debris flying all around me. And was the only one of the entire early shift to arrive. Until midday. Today we hunkered down with not a breath of air coming through the cottage thanks to the double-glazed and foam-edged sash-windows and double doors front and rear. Double as in you walk through one before the other rather than being side by side. Things eased by mid-afternoon though it was still wild on the clifftops as I took a few snaps. The sea wasn't anywhere near as high as I have seen it but could still politely be described as "big and confused". Amazingly there were folk out walking the clifftop paths from and to Lands End. We drove into Newlyn this evening for a first-for-us visit to the "Picture House". A two-screen cinema in a converted fishing warehouse. Quite comfortable it was too. It even has a bar and snackery. Plus a commendable "No rustling and no crunching" policy; you are only permitted drinks and ice-creams in the screens themselves. We saw "Wonka" which Dr. SWMBO enjoyed rather more than I did. Fantasy musicals have never been my thing. The original Wonka story has never been my favourite. But I was being taken out so hey. As we left there was a shout from behind us. Some young female - who had been seated with her partner in the seats next to us - yelled something about disrespecting the disabled and not making space. She then added "And take your fat c*w of a wife away" Dr. SWMBO - who is borderline disabled for a number of reasons and may yet quality for a "blue badge" - was in tears. Before we reached the car she had a full on anxiety attack. Nothing had provoked this. All four of us had sat in silence through the film and we had left first being at the end of the row. I managed to catch the number-plate of her car as she hastily drove off. I also popped back into the cinema to let their staff know what had taken place and the seat number of the offender. I shall be passing the local police station on other business tomorrow. I might record a complaint of public nuisance. There's not a lot more they could do but at least it would be on record. We drove down to Mousehole to view the seasonally-appropriate illuminations as planned. But in silence and hoping that if karma really does return that it does so in a suitable manner. Not the evening out we had hoped for. At least the cinema staff were empathetic and apologietic. They couldn't release the person's name (which point I agreed would be a data breach) but they did make a note as they have a record of who she is and her point of contact. We'll see if anything eventuates. Meanwhile we are off to breakfast at the Dog & Rabbit with much nicer people in the morning. And Dr. SWMBO is trying to get to sleep.

Which is good news. You mentioned in your later post that Sheila is tired and further tests await. Neither is particularly cause for concern and “extra tests” are likely to be routine post-op biochemistry and haematology monitoring. Sheesh, I wish they’d do a better job of explaining what they are doing - it’d definitely be more reassuring for patients. As a FYI the black stockings were anti-thrombotic stockings. They’re used as a routine precaution to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT) during and after surgery whilst the patient is immobile/has limited mobility. Generally, the rule of thumb is to ambulate patients ASAP post surgery and I have seen hip protheses patients being ambulated soon after surgery (sometimes even the same day - albeit just for a few steps). The era of being confined to bed for days post-op is - for the most part - over. Anti-thrombotic stockings are also very useful to wear on long-haul flights. They help prevent “economy class syndrome” - basically a series of thromboembolic events that can be very dangerous. The term was, I believe, coined by the Ozzies as they saw a lot of people with this syndrome coming off of flights from Europe and the Americas.
