RMweb Gold Popular Post grandadbob Posted January 27 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 27 (edited) Good morning all, Dull here earlier and a bit frosty but blue sky is making an appearance along with something bright and it should stay dry. 3°C rising to 9°C. Rugby watched last night and it was a scrappy but entertaining game. Quins nearly nicked it at the end but Tigers deserved their win. A couple more matches available for viewing this afternoon. After breakfast I'm intending to go for a walk and I believe The Boss wants some assistance with domestic stuff as well. Hopefully I'll have a bit of time to continue "essential" maintenance tasks in The Shed. Tonight we're going to a party next door for Russ's 60th birthday. Looking forward to having a pint or two(ish) because I've been "dry" all week. Time for my porridge. Have a good one, Bob. RMweb Gold Popular Post DaveF Posted January 27 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 27 7°C here with a mix of cloud and sun so not unpleasant. I'm going to have a look at the sea and perhaps the park. I had quite a good night's sleep, a bit longer than usual so it was a slow start and I am now catching up. Last night I ended up watching a pleasant programme on a german TV channel, a compilation of German singers performing standards and newer songs on an outdoor stage in heavy snow along with filmed bits of them singing in snow covered alpine landscapes. Undemanding and pleasant, even the more modern music wasn't bad. Then I listened to some Mozart piano concertos. Today will involve more old photos and I may have a look at the garden as weeds seem to be growing as well as snowdrops and crocuses. It seems that the students are coping badly with the material they can't be bothered to concentrate on! I remember having a philosophy essay to write during a college summer vacation. Luckily, I thought, I had the topic covered in a set of encyclopaedias I had had since I was 11. I wrote my essay but did not understand a word of it. I went to the 1 to 1 tutorial to apologise for a poor essay on the grounds that I did not grasp the subject. I got a "B". Astounded to have been given such a high grade, I never popped the question, "What on earth does it mean?" 11 1

Popular Post Smiffy2
Morning all. Whelkmen somnolent. Apparently whelks don't come out at weekends. I can't say I blame them. Frosty at first, now thawed, will go and warm up the workshed and try to make the pickguard for Spud's guitar. She's on a high as her team won the Sutton High Schools Football Tournament yesterday, conceding only one goal in the tournament. Then we will have a domestic planning session for tasks to be done, book our first trip to France this year and contact friends (KIT day). The work done on my hips by the osteopath has really worked - I can now walk again! Or could, if I hadn't picked up some dreadful stomach bug... So a quiet day today, best wishes to all in their assorted trials and endeavours. 2

Today is a writinganinterviewwithoutcoffee email regarding cricket, fixing my potato cart, reloading the Beast then.. hey Ho! Hey Ho! It's off to Pontecarlos via the Clubrooms. We seem to be missing even more ERs at the moment. @polybear, @PupCam, @zarniwhoop@Grizz, @Robert, @andyram, @NGT6 1315 along with several other more long term non attendees. I hope they are all well. mugatea time.. then off to girebup my scintillisation chamber! stay safe! encourage your day to be a good one! baz. Appologies for being AWOL ERers…..and kind of you to notice Baz. Thanks mate. Reason is I’ve been very busy. Firstly number two cub got sick two weeks so ago with one of these poxy viruses going round. One of the ones with a chest infection, chesty cough and high temperature that goes with the infection. Fortunately she is now on he mend but she still has the persistent deep cough that seems to go into spasm periodically. Flipping horrible to listen to, let alone having it. Then when things seemed to be improving…Mrs Grizz got it. Now I’ve know Mrs Grizz for over 30 years, and I think I can count on one hand the number of times she has been completely floored by a virus. This is one of them. She normally only gets sick for a three or four days before it starts getting better. Not this virus though. She has had it for a week and last night it got worse, with severe headaches and nausea as well as a temperature. So I am banished to my workshop during off work rest days, which was converted to contain a shower, bed and kitchen area during the later stages of my Covid isolation. I occasionally text Mrs Grizz and number two cub to check if they need anything. Food for them is therefore sadly restricted for the time being to, beans on toast, eggs on toast, cheese on toast, tomatoes on toast, sardines on toast and pizza…..basically anything that will fit through the gap under the door. 😂 Baz, whilst I know that you are a cricket man, number one cub is off up to your glorious county today to watch Brighton V Sheffield Utd. He left around 07:30 to catch the train up and is apparently meeting his mates and fellow Seagulls supporters on route. Should be a good game. Shame of it is he is off the beer at the moment for a bit of a health kick, and there was me tellling him to try this ale and this bitter whilst he was there. Youth is definitely wasted on the young, but he did at least have the decency to wait until I’d finished telling him how great Yorkshire brewing was before telling me he was off it. Have a great day all ERers. ATB Grizz Edited January 27 by Grizz
RMweb Premium BSW01 Posted January 27 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 27 (edited) Good morning everyone Today will be another day just like the rest have been recently, eye bathing and domestic tasks. This afternoon however will be different, as Vickie and Ian are dropping Ava off at ours after dinner so she can spend the afternoon here with us, so that’s something to look forward too. When I worked at British Steel, on my shift there were 12 of us, 3 Brian’s, 4 Pete’s and 4 John’s, so we had, Brian the fitter, Brian the electrician, Brian the plumber, big Pete the fitter, little Pete the fitter, Pete the electrician, Pete the mate, John the fitter, John the electrician, John the turner, John the mate and just to confuse things we Paul the welder! Oh and our foreman was called Tommy, he was a nice bloke, but a right fecking edjit! Back later. Brian Edited January 27 by BSW01 5

RMweb Premium Popular Post RobAllen Posted January 27 RMweb Premium Popular Post Share Posted January 27 Morning all. I have just completed the audio book version of Making It So, Patrick Stewart's autobiography. I usually prefer biographies rather than autobiographies, preferably written after the person has lived so that there's more perspective, but Stewart's book was very enjoyable. 16 2

RMweb Gold Popular Post Tony_S Posted January 27 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted January 27 Morning all. It is sunny but was cold enough earlier for frost on garden buildings. It still isn’t very warm. I went to the shops to pick up a prescription for Aditi and leave my watch to have a bracelet link reinserted. It was a bit tight last time I attempted to wear it. This is a nice stainless steel watch rather than my everyday plastic Casio watch. I did look at a couple of YouTube videos that showed how to replace the links using a paperclip and a small hammer or how to use an easily available on Amazon press but supporting a small local business seemed easier. We may head off this afternoon to Hyde Hall gardens to admire their winter exhibits. Before that we will need to sort out the shopping that is on its way to us. When I went out to the car this morning I noticed three 25kg bags of salt pellets. My nice neighbour over the road gets extra when he needs some. We have identical water softeners and use about the same amount. However he has a big van and gets it when it is on offer. It isn’t on offer anywhere now and is much more expensive than last year but if you need it… Another neighbour said he didn’t use anything like as much salt as we both did. He had somehow turned it off. Tony 18

RMweb Premium jjb1970 Posted January 27 RMweb Premium Share Posted January 27 I had an all day breakfast for lunch today at a good western restaurant. Alas an all day breakfast here is not what it would be at home, no black pudding, the sausage was an arabiki frankfurter (nice, but not a cumberland sausage) and no fried bread. It did have cheese pancakes and potato gratin and proper bacon. However, what made it was scrambled egg, scrambled egg is one of my barometer dishes which gives an idea of whether a cook can prepare simple basic food. And because it is so simple and basic there's nowhere to hide, it's good or it isn't. I find most scrambled eggs in cafes are over done (I suspect a lot are made from powdered egg), I like scrambled egg to be runny, soft and still quite fluid but not underdone. Scrambled egg is a bit like pear, pears have that fleeting moment between having the physical properties of cast iron and being a soggy mush, so with scrambled eggs the line between under done and over done is very fine (if forced to choose I prefer slightly under done to over done, but that's just me and really they should be right). Today the scrambled egg was perfect, done to perfection, that one thing actually made the lunch for me. Splendid. 15

We had our rules for our after school street cricket matches worked out to the infinite degree - eg hitting it into the Murrays Jacarandah tree on the full was 6 and out, hitting Mr Grundys car parked out the front was instantly out because he'd come out and chase us and so on. But one of my mates - Rick Noble - would always find a way to bend the rules and we could never argue with him because his grandad or maybe great grandad was M. A . Noble who had played for Australia against England in 1900 or something and who the M. A. Noble Stand at the SCG was named after. And not only that but he was an over acheiver in the famous relations department because his cousin was Rob Hirst, drummer in Midnight Oil, so we were so outweighed by famousness that we had no choice but to kowtow to all his rule modifications. Do you self a favour tip. If the BBC shows Bluey on their streaming service, check out the episode called "Cricket" series 3, episode 47. It is the most lovingly crafted poignant 7 minutes about cricket that you'll ever see. 5 stars. * Edited January 27 by monkeysarefun 15
monkeysarefun
Been watching the first two episodes of "Masters Of The Air". Gotta say, its not in the same league as "Band Of Brothers" so far.. The flying and bombing and getting shot at is probably realistic but so far I do not care about the characters, their needlessly over the top hokey American-ness is laid on with a giant 3D pen and is a little annoying and I would not care if they all got shot down, sorry to say. The Bluey Cricket episode is a much better watch. Edited January 27 by monkeysarefun 2 11
