They maybe on a Loco detailing etch I think they do? How about MT 256??

The kit at some time resided in Hornchurch Shop a couple of miles from me . Never heard of the name of the shop or the maker before!!! that kit is a tad old!!

A bit of a blast from the past, in true not like Coachman style I started this early last year and I have just finished painting and lining it.

Admittedly I had it painted quite some time ago but I had a run in the paint so I rubbed it down and never got around to repainting it until now.

Well it has been some time since I did anything in 4mm but in a quest to finish of some part built stuff - and yes the Q7 is on the list :O in order to sell them to raise funds.

So I picked up my Jidenco (the box says that the original owner received it from Jidenco in 1979!!) L&Y Railmotor that I part built so that the gent from Highlevel (can't bring his name to mind) could recommend a motor/gear box. It was then put aside for later and now much later, when clearing out bit's and pieces I came across it so I decided to crack on with it.

In true Jidenco fashion a lot of the etches are like tissue paper and so have needed some beefing up with scrap etch. The solebars being an example and the loco steps.

The roof I rolled myself from brass sheet and for once I wasn't happy with the finish/fit despite best efforts it splayed in the middle so I made some formers to keep it in shape.

The inner partitions between the drivers compartment and the luggage compartment are both scratch built as are the doors.

The queen posts are brass tube with split pins soldered in and the turnbuckles are micro-bore brass tube that I filed through each side using a round file to create the turnbuckle.

Next job is to create a removable floor so I can solder the roof on solid. I also need to buy a couple of Rromford crank pins as bizarrely the wheels didn't come with them (Bought direct from Markits too) and I only have two in my remaining stock of 4mm bit's.

The motion is all nickel but again I am going to have to scratchbuild some laminates to make it sturdy enough to work. to this end I bought a set of Gibson motion at the time that has the same con rod length - not sure how much of the rest will be any use.

Hi Graham, According to British Railcars 1900 1950 by Jenkinson and Lane, it's Hughes design of Railmotor of 1906 built for the Lancashire and Yorkshire.

There are quite few photo's and a 4mm scale drawing which is a big improvement on the next to nothing Jidenco instructions.

Now you are asking Graham - Were Jidenco based on a prototype  ? I will consult the box/instructions and come back to you.

It says much that I have to check "over there" to find out what you are doing "over here"..... Black Rod rules ko?

Wow doesn't time fly when you are having fun? I last posted on this in November 2009 (page one of this thread). In a bid to raise funds and clear the remaining items of 4mm stock unfinished projects (still a few to go sadly) I dug out my Chivers BY120 pigeon van and completed it.

I now have the required crank pins for the railmotor so that may see progress too.

There is some fine work here Rob. I have a thing for 4Fs (got one on the go from the Airfix model at the moment) and wonder what happened to the kit you mentioned earlier. There was mention of lack of castings so I thought you might be interested in knowing that Brassmasters will sell a castings pack from their 4F kit.

Hi John,

Thanks for that, I did think of enquiring of Brassmasters but ultimately sold the kit with all the bits and pieces that I had acquired to enhance it, along with all my rtr and unstarted kits. So although I don't have any un-started 4mm stuff left, I do have some (read quite a few or so it seems) part built projects to finish and sell which include the railmotor above, a Comet LNER triplet set, an MJT D114, a DJH Q7, a PDK D16 a PC Models Midland clerestory. I just keep fitting them in as I feel enthusiasm for it.

The sad bit is that most of them apart from the Midland coach need very little to finish them off.

It's been a while since I updated this thread....

Earlier this year whilst doing a demo, a gent asked Chris if I built whitemetal kits (I was having some lunch at the time). She told him I did and he contacted me after the show.

It turned out that what he was looking for was someone to build some very early 4mm scale DJH Loco kit's of Highland locos - Specifically a Barney and a Jones Goods. I agreed that I would build them and rather innocently told him that I would endeavour to have them finished by the end of the year. At that point I had no idea how much time Chris's exhibition would take up so here we are almost at the end of the year so I thought I would at least try to keep my promise.

I started with the tender and I didn't really like the idea of putting axles into the whitemetal axle boxes without bearings so I cut down some 7mm wagon top hat bearings which fitted the Markits axles perfectly.

As soon as I looked at the brake standard it broke but luckily while looking in my spares box for bit's to scratch build a replacement I found a rather nice cast one left from my 4mm days so I used that.

There were some rather nice turned sprung buffers in the kit but sadly the frames got in the way for the tails/nuts so I agreed with the client to cut them of and make them unsprung. The vac pipe is scratched from various thickness of rod/wire and some thin walled tube.

Hi Rob,

Did you finish the Lanky railmotor? I have one of these to build.

Hi Dave,

I didn't,  when I moved up to 7mm I sold it part build to fund 7mm stuff. Based on where I got to with it I would suggest that you scrap the chassis and make a new one as the slots for the cylinders were miles out if I remember correctly.

Another session saw me tackling the loco body and despite its small size it's going together nicely.

A further session at the bench saw much of the loco complete.

Just the steps, hand rails plus quite a bit of hacking underneath to get the coupling rods to clear the footplate and it's done. Then from wiring up and testing but I think that I will get both locos to the same state before doing that bit.
