Blue Ones though

Never Green ones, or if they are then it's almost always Early Crest :sad_mini2: :sad_mini2:

The £17 difference in price would surely more than cover a pot of paint, brush and transfers??

At that price, I've ordered 2. One will left as is, the other will become a chassis donor (with some adjustment/replacement of the undergubbins) for a 114 2-car set bodged from Hornby 110 bodyshells.

But not - perhaps - the skill to use them in a way such that you end up with something remotely resembling the more expensive one.

I would consider it £17 well spent!

Well, except that I'd want the blue one anyway.

The Works in Sauchiehall St Glasgow has 'British Railway Pictorial; Scottish Region 1948-1967' (Brian J.Dickson, Ian Allan 2006) for £4. Although a bit before my time, well worth buying at that price.

The Works very much regionalise their stock (as do other bookshops to a certain degree) so it is unlikely to be found far down south.

Likewise I bet you don't see "Lost Raiways of Warwickshire" up there.

Unfortunately their website often doesn't seem to have some of these items, so you need to visit personally to get them.

It's a skill that can be easily/quickly/cheaply learnt, though - in this case I'd perhaps cut a few strips of plasticard of similar basic size/shape to the DPU side (or maybe buy a tatty old coach at a swapmeet/exhibition) and practice to add a useful and transferable skill to my repertoire before I attempted repainting the model, but it is a single colour change only.

Not for everyone.

Going off topic again, but I know - from experience - that I wouldn't be able to get a finish approaching the quality of an RTR model without (maybe) a lot more practise and probably money on better brushes/an airbrush.

Hattons have reduced two of the Heljan diesel parcel units to £52.

I had to buy one at that price.

The ones now reduced to £52 were shown at £69 in this month's Toddler.  The green ones were shown at £94, now £69 on the web.  They just might come down further next ......

My local newsagent does a twice a year bulk buy of railway themed books,

Typically old stock from the likes of Ian Allen, and major retailers.

This week he told me he has taken delivery of two pallets full of stock, almost entirely railway based, from steam through to modern image, infrastructure ,wagons, all regions all eras,

Last time books were typically around 75% off the RRP on the back cover.

I don't have a list, but suggest a call if your interested.

Personally I've previously sourced modern image wagon books, 80s blue spotting albums, and freight titles.

The shop is called AB Snell and they do mail order.

I've picked up a few volumes in the past when I've gone up to pick up a paper for mum. Do they have much left at the moment? Last time I was down, Snell's appeared to becoming more of a convenience store than the newsagent/stationers that it used to be.

There's still a big stack in the centre of the shop, plus some overflow. Or there was yesterday lunchtime, anyway.

I enjoyed my visit there - came away with four books, and had a pleasant chat with the person behind the counter too.

Some of the books are pretty specialised (transport of Halifax, for example), some are more general (private owner wagons, Midland region steam in the 60's...) Well worth a look if you're in the area.

What I couldn't buy there was the shelf space to put them on, and the time to actually read the books...

I hit Snell's last weekend, and surfaced with a couple of Ian Allan colour albums at £4 each, and one of the Pannier Papers at £3.

.

I noticed several Book Law colour albums at £4 and £5

.

Also 4 of the first 5 editions of some soft back S&DJR series, which would have set me back £12 if I'd bought them.

.

Bargains to be had, but you need to sort through the table and shelves.

I can confirm that there seem to be regional variations in The Works.  The branch in Chichester which I can only describe as resembling the aftermath of a bomb explosion in a Church jumble sale had neither the DMU or Scottish books among the badly displayed wreckage.

The Cardiff The Works has a little "History of the GWR" for £2. Seems quite timely given the recent resurrection of the "brand".

Probably not of much interest to most people here, but I've put one aside for a Christmas present for a 12 year old who will appreciate it.

An accurate description of "Primark" in Cardiff - where it is customary for the lower classes and socially excluded to remove items from hangers and displays, then replace them, on the floor.

Or anywhere?

I went into one once hearing that it was a "good" place to shop. I was only in there long enough to turn around and come back out.

It looked like one of those collection centres that charities have when you get an appeal for clothes for an African disaster, waiting for items to be sorted.

Everything was just in piles!

Do you buy the clothes by weight? :jester:

The way those that shop there have their items stuffed into bags gives that impression!

Reminds me of when there was a Government initiative on High Street shopping. BBC TV interviewed a girl in Barnsley about the state of the town centre at the time. Her view was that they needed some decent shops like Primark. The place must have been pretty dire if that would be seen as an improvement.

Whilst I agree with the Primark=carp thing, it must be important to many people. Having been to the Primark in Exeter several times with friends and yet never buying anything, I have never seen the cash tills without queues. Clothes are all over the place as has been mentioned previously but the shop is always full of people especially foreign students.

I believe students like the existence of Primark, as it enables the ability to stock up and so removes the requirement to wash socks within a term.  Personally I used to like popping down the laundrette, usually a good place for random conversation starting.

The 'lower classes'...?

Oh dear, should I have stuck to other forums more suited to 'my sort' ?
