I wouldn't call this forgotten equipment -

attachicon.gifLNER post.jpg

But still doing the job it was designed for!

These are LNER marked fence posts at the north end of platform 2 on Grantham.

These posts are quite common, there are/were plenty to be seen all over the ex LNER lines. During the 80's many of the EMU's working on the GE lines out of Liverpool Street that were equipped with Gresley bogies sported axle box covers impressed with LNER in similar style.

About 300yds inside the London end of Box tunnel the lower quadrant aspect frame of Corsham SB's outer home (?) signal still stands on it's post in the up cess (just the aspect holder on its pivot as no arm was required).................

and no, there are definitely NO steam engines.......................

Shock, horror, the strategic reserve must have been moved elsewhere (in secret!) :jester:

Keith

Hasn't it been moved to the channel tunnel. Easy access to the continent  to keep out exports going. Some subterfuge about turning one of the TBMs off to the side  and leaving it down there was used.  What else is down there with the TBM? Ghost of engines past?

I now regularly travel by train lately and the other week i was on my way home on a northern rail pacer, and i noticed something which really amazed me. the emergency ladder strapped up next to the middle door still had BR painted on it. and a few pics i took a few years ago of 3 stone L&YR boundary posts inbetween Wakefield and Normanton

I don't have a photo, but some years ago, whilst walking the old Three Bridges to East Grinstead route (a really good foot/cycle path) I found some coal in what would have been the 'cess'. OK so that's really exciting isn't it, but I have ground that up & used it in many tenders on my loco's and several wagons. My other source of coal for layout use is on Potteric Carr Nature Reserve (Yorkshire Wildlife Trust just south of Donny) where part of the reserve is on railway land where there were loads of sidings and I'm told wagons and coaches were broken up there as well.

Some years ago I parked up at Hunstanton, the car park was not surfaced, and was located where the old loco shed had been. I found a couple of lumps of coal there, & put them in the boot, for use on my GE section locos. Quite ironic that many years later (ie now) I am building a layout based on Hunstanton! Genuine steam coal from the actual prototype.

I was at Birkenhead North station this morning and when I came home and looked at the photos I'd taken I noticed this point rodding still in situ, to the left of the siding, just over 19 years since it became redundant.

The post(s) behind the mesh on the platform are the last remains of the old footbridge, removed in the early hours of Sunday the 17th. They will shortly be removed by hand so as not to damage the platform wall.

That's not long - there are still a few signal wire run pulleys attached to the side walls of one of the platforms at Swindon, 45 years since the signal wires running through them were removed when Swindon panel commissioned (March 1968).

Some of you might consider this posting (rather long but stay with me...) off-topic, but here goes.

Whilst in Kings Lynn today, I popped into the station, as I'd heard the refubished 365 was stabled there for the weekend. Not relevant here, but I'll post it anyway.

Now to the relevant pics. Outside the station I noticed plenty of these lamps. New installs of retro design LED lamps, but tasteful.

My attention was then taken by a small notice stuck on a hoarding. I had a double take at this one!.

And there were more.....

Then round to the main entrance at the front. Though closed, due to the ongoing refurbishment works, I noticed the canopy behind the scaffolding. Look closely at this cropped and heavily Photoshop adjusted picture. Apologies for the quality of pics btw, all taken on my smartphone

Inside the station I found this poster board. I've also taken a closeup of the LHS, you don't see many FCC notices headed British Railways!

Another one outside

This one is really something different.

And just to finish off - the whole station has been resigned with these totems.

A bit of Googling reveals that the "heritage-style makeover" at King's Lynn has been funded by Network Rail and First Capital Connect, following consultation with local groups, including the Fen Line Users’ Association.

Full details here: http://www.firstcapitalconnect.co.uk/better-stations/kings-lynn/

Well done them. :)
