here are some drawings to help me explain, the top 2 images show the updated ramp wagon, the frame beneath the axles is to protect the underside detail in transit/ packaging and must be removed to allow the axles to be fitted. most parts have almost been doubled in width, but it is hardly noticeable (were talking of widths in tenths of a millimetre), but should improve its strength/ durability.

post-13109-0-49896000-1352324490_thumb.jpg

The second 2 images show the ramp wagon diorama, this has a similar underside guard, but also has the buffers moved to a sprue on the guard to protect them, but with cut outs in the sides to help locate them (thought they will still be a bit fiddly to fit, probably). The removable axle is attached by two small sprue's to the main frames, careful cutting should release it, a tie piece has also been added to stop the base of the separate axle from splaying as happened on my original prototypes (please note this was never an issue with the fixed axles).

Hope this makes things a bit clearer.

Hello Everyone,

Time for an update,

Past projects:

Shapeways have now approved the Ramp wagon and Ramp wagon diorama for production so these should be with me by a week tomorrow if everything goes to plan. Then the Parrot, Scrap bogie box, and the full relief MOD Containers should arrive the Monday after that (However I believe that I may get them sooner).

New projects:

With the development of the parrot nearing completion (hopefully!), I have now had the confidence to create the cable layering versions of these wagons, they would still require handrails adding and extra plating where necessary on your chosen prototype, but I believe I have now the drawings to allow any of the 10 wagons to be created. I am considering producing an extra pack to produce the generators and lamps fitted to some of the vehicles in more recent times. This project has been massively helped by the generosity of Lyddrail of this forum, so thank you for your help. Here are some images of the models,

Something for the GWR fans!

Another project I am currently working on is the GWR 9 tank 'Cordon' gas wagons, these wagons will be based on the design DD4 as per the drawing in 'GWR wagon plans'.

I am however having some difficulty with the underframe detail on these wagons as it appears to change from wagon to wagon, however this is what I have managed so far.

Another project that hadn't had much work done but won't be going any further is the BR diesel brake tender, I had not yet announced this, but I look forward to getting the Hornby Magazine's ones instead.

Hi WBF,

The cable layer Parrots look really good (I can see that with heavy heart, I shall be consigning my s/built ones to the bin  ).

That work on the fine frame work of the parrots would lend itself well to the original FGA/FFA freightliners wagons.

With the DBT, why don't you do the "square" version to complement the "round" version that the Hornby Mag (and all the previous kits) represent.

Hello Southernman,

Thanks for your comments, I certainly wouldn't bin yours, you must get some satisfaction from building those, that you wouldn't from a kit.

Yes I see what you mean about the flats, that is why I have the flats pencilled in for a long term project (The parrot was partly a test to see whether something like that would be strong enough (and cheap enough!).

Your quite correct, the square DBT is an option, I don't particularly like the look of the square ones myself but it would be good to have some variety in them.

Hello Cheesysmith,

Due to the wall thickness necessary, I don't think I would be able to make it hollow. However I think the wagon would be able to take the weight, they aren't much longer than the parrot, and that has managed to withstand 3 containers sat on it (two Dapol and one of my side loaders which is pretty heavy!).

Regard,

Wild Boar Fell

P.s. I.materialise order now due this Monday (1 week early!) hopefully photos to follow.

Hello Everyone,

My I.Materialise order has arrived today with the final samples of the Parrot, 20ft Container (Full Relief Detail) and the Scrap Metal Bogie Box.

I am very pleased with the results, with the parrot working especially well. I have therefore put all 3 up for sale on my website. But here are some photos,

The Parrot, my favourite item I have made so far!

Bogie box (unfortunately this is more expensive than the others, due to the greater size).

Hello Everyone,

I've now assembled the parrot and treated all 3 items to a thin coat of primer (not my best idea being 6 degrees outside).

I think they have all worked well, but they still need another coat and some smoothing. To me the container doesn't seem as smooth as the last one, but I think it has been orientated differently. Anyway feel free to share your views.

Luckily the new underside beams on the parrot have printed this time the original (incorrect) version didn't print last time but the new accurate design using two thicker beams has.

Hello Everyone,

I've today got some mixed feelings about shapeways, as I have received my latest order containing the new 'V2' Ramp wagon. The print itself has turned out very well and I am impressed with the quality, it is the highest I believe of any FUD items I have ordered. Also the packaging was slightly better this time, with a larger bag and a card insert, though I still think the added 'bumper bars' on the design have helped prevent transit damage. So far so good, until I realised I had ordered 2 items, the ramp wagon and the diorama. Where that is I don't know, but I have contacted them so hopefully it will turn up. Anyway back to the ramp wagon, I am happy with the new design and have approved it for production, and so it is up for sale now via my website. I haven't yet added instructions but these will be added when time permits. Here are some photos.

These 3 images show it as it arrived complete with the 'bumper bars', these must be removed to allow wheels to be fitted. I used scissors to complete this task.

Finally a photo after their removal, with the axles dropped in place.

Thanks Paul,

I think it has helped this model and hopefully any production versions of it, unfortunately thought it turns out that the bumper bars caused the Ramp Wagon Diorama to be rejected (which is why it didn't turn up).

I have since had time to paint the new Ramp Wagon (left) and here are some photos of it and the original version (right) next to it.

Hi Mike,

unfortunately there is no real progress on this Cordon at the minute, it will probably be late January/ February before I have this in production, I still need to check a few things first before having it prototyped. The wagons I am doing are based on the DD4 variant, which is proving to be far from a standard design. These wagons unfortunately won't be available until I have had them prototyped and I am happy with the design. I am probably going to have the wagon done in polyamide as FUD would make this far too expensive. Visitors to Warley this year may have noticed something related to this and another project if you were luck enough to visit, more details about those project will come to light as they progress.

Here are some fairly up to date drawings of the wagons (or parts of them),

Hello Everyone,

Recently I have managed to get some main design work of the Cordon finalised ready for the first prototype (This will be in polyamide, as per the production model), A new feature for this model will be the inclusion of the NEM coupler pockets at each ends. These have been drawn using official dimensions so should hopefully work and be compatible with most other items of stock. I am hopefully having this prototyped and If all goes well I may have some more news soon. The cordon is designed so it can be split into the chassis, lower tanks and upper tanks to make it easier to paint.

Here are some renders,

Hello Everyone,

After some Really Rapid Prototyping (I.materialise Priority service) I have received the first Cordon prototype and the two cable laying parrot prototypes.

I must say for the speed of the order the quality of print is impressive, especially on the Cordon (They were ordered on Sunday 16th). There doesn't even appear to be an issue of stepping on the tanks (what little flatness is the design). Luckily the NEM pockets worked first time and the couplers clicked into place. Even the frame spacing appears correct, with some 14 mm wheels pinched from a Bachmann MK1 they fitted fine and ran freely without bearings, however provision has been made for these if desired. The only real problem I found with the Cordon was that I found I hadn't aligned the frames length ways, so one axle is closer to the end than the other. This of course means that another print is needed meaning it will probably be February before its finished.

As for the Cable layers, one wagon has suffered slight bending to a part but this was later straightened, the 3 spindle wagon appears to be fine and will be test built in due course, with it hopefully appearing up for sale in the next week. There was a design issue with the 2 spindle wagon however, so this should join the cordon in being ready for February.

Hello Everyone,

Firstly I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,

Just a quick message to say that the parrot cable layer (3 stantions variant) is now available to purchase through my website or I.materialise.

The test wagon has been assembled and run in on the new 'test' layout successfully managing second radius curves and medium points in various configurations with the wagon being propelled and pulled over them.

My wagon now needs a second coat of paint and some base toy cable drums to finish it.

Hopefully in February I might be able to get the 2 spindle version sorted.

Wild Boar Fell

The Hornby & Base Toys cable drums are perfect........................off to order my parrot layers

Hello Everyone,

Firstly thanks Southernman for that, I have checked and certainly the large Base toy drum fits in its correct location and the smaller drums will be needed for the outer two spindles. Unfortunately I don't have any Hornby drums to check them.

Secondly, there was an interesting program on BBC2 on Sunday "Tankies: Tank Hero's of WW2", but it featured some brief archive shots of Warflats in action, and I think there was a very short shot of a rake of 80t Warwells loaded with Churchill's, however I cannot find where in the program this was, but it is still on the Iplayer.

Unfortunately there will be no news on the printing front for a while,

I notice that the ramp wagon is on the lastest Ramco tender list - http://www.ramco.co.uk/sales/tenderview.php?tender=58 I guess it could easily end up as scrap.

Jon

Hello,

Just a quick note to say that on checking the tender list today, the Ramp wagon has disappeared from the list. Does anyone know if it has gone into preservation. Also I have just read another forum that mentioned a ramp wagon on the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway, though I have never seen this or heard any other reference to it.

Secondly, does anyone happen to know what the wheel base (bogie centres) of the FGA and FFA's are please as I am struggling with dimensioned scale drawings.

Regards,

Wild Boar Fell

Heres some renders of projects that I will develop on shortly
